Well, after piddling around with this game for the last 3 days, and not having any luck getting my L. Attack3 calibrated, I broke down and purchased a CH Combatstick 568 yesterday from Frys for $75.

I went home.... plugged the CH in... guess what the game did.... it did the same thing it'd been doing for the last couple days.

Here's the freaking ticker, guys: these last couple days I thought there was something 'wrong' with the way the planes were contantly leaning hard left (with wind/turb, gyro fx, flutter turned on) or leaning hard right with those 3 options turned off.

My buddy came over and we spent an hour discussing the "problem". He tried flying to figure out what it was... couldn't. We sat there... we smoked a lil, discussed, shook our heads, etc..

Finally, my friend asks me if I truly know what Aileron meant.... in my stoney state, I became upset with him and replied, "dude, I know what the aileron does, jesus"..... a couple cigs later, I was meditating on what he said... and starting thinking to myself.

With those 3 difficulty settings on, the plane goes left with all 3 control surfaces neutral... I've been thinking for the last couple days that this was wrong. Well, I started thinking like I actually had a brain... I thought, "damn.... torque makes the engine pull left... with that option turned off, the plane is going right.. hmmm, when I hit my button for Aileron Neutral, the plane really goes hard left... hmmmm...

And then yes - I realized what a freaking IDIOT I've been these last couple days. At first, I didn't want to come here and admit that I wasted you fine peoples time (obviously, not on purpose), but since I'm not a liar, I'm owning up to the fact that this ENTIRE time, the game and the joysticks have been operating at peak performance.

There is NOTHING wrong with the hardware and NOTHING wrong the game, and nothing wrong with my Windows install.

I am beyond relieved to finally understand that usually when one takes off, they've got to get the aileron situated (straight) by using the trims.... THEN, the plane should fly relatively straight... only needing minor aileron trim adjustments throughout the remainder of the flight.

Now, I've got two joysticks, and in all honesty, I prefer the arcady/plasticy/toylike/SUPER stiff feel of the Attack 3 over the CH joystick... don't get me wrong, the CH feels awesome, but it is a completely different feeling joystick compared to the Attack 3. Obviously, I could change the settings on the CH to make it less loosey goosey feeling, but I think I'll stick with the rigid feel of the Attack 3. That, and that pinkie button on the CH joystick drives me up a wall.

So, in essense, I'd like to apologize to everyone who attempted to help me. To the people that kept reiterating, "hey buddy, the game has torque, and you have to learn to compensate for it, yada" - I WISH I would have paid greater attention to this... you guys were right on the money from the get go.

All in all, thanks for all your help, and I'll really appreciate it if you don't label me as the village idiot... I think it was a simple mistake as I've never experienced such an advanced feeling flight sim before.

Anyhoot, the game works 100% now. I'm gonna be getting some serious practice on, will be online in the coming months, and will for SURE be bsing with you guys about tactics/various planes in the future no doubt.

Update: I shot my first plane down last night - YAY!!! Me in a P-39 Cobra Vs. a BF-110 (lol)... I need the practice ha. I made one of his engines catch on fire, and then I preceded to hunt him until he ended up crashing.

Aiming in this game is HARD@!! I've so much to learn...

Rock on and major thanks again for y'alls willingness to help,

Chr*s

Do you know how hard it is to get new guys to admit they are wrong when they post to whine incessantly about `How this couldn`t be!` and `How that`s not realistic?!` etc, etc...

With all the best will in the world they will not accept that perhaps they just don`t really understand how aircraft fly, especially when they`ve never studied or flown aircraft.

`I think` is very nice, but must be prefixed with, `I actually don`t really know since i`ve never flown a WWII Spitfire`.

Anyway, it`s always nice when someone owns up and says `sorry`. You have made one step further to enlightenment. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You guys are outstanding (feel like I've found a new home),

YEEESSSS!!!!!!!!! The IL2 Holy Grail

THank you SO much for sharing that.

"Once you've selected climb power and adjusted the aircraft pitch angle so that you're climbing at your required rate, trim. Trim the elevator first so that you don't have to pull or push on the stick to maintain chosen climb speed. If the aircraft is equipped with rudder trim, trim rudder so that the slip indicator is centered. If you don't know what the slip indicator looks like in your favourite ride, or where to find it, check the cockpit reference guide kindly compiled by neural_dream. It can be found by clicking here.
Finally, if your aircraft is equipped trim ailerons to cancel torque induced roll. This must be done last as a badly trimmed rudder will also cause some roll. If you trim aileron before rudder, you're going to have to come back and re-trim aileron after you've finished with rudder.

Bear in mind that engine efficiency (and hence torque) changes with altitude, so if you're climbing or descending the torque will be slowly changing much of the time. You'll periodically find you need to re-trim for torque in a long climb or descent even if you haven't changed throttle settings."

I wish I would have read that 3 days ago : )

You rule above all that which does rule, FoolTrottel!

Hey NT,
Glad you sorted your initial probs out, m8
Pity you had to buy 2 joysticks before you worked it out, though.
The main thing is that you eventually figured it out for yourself, though, even through the smoke haze http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif
Thats always the best way to learn, and the honesty thing, yeah, I'm like you in that regard- it really makes life easier to handle on all accounts.
Anyways, many happy years of virtual flying to you! Seeya in the forums, and let us know when you're going online - I just started a week ago, after playing this sim offline for 6 freakin' years! A whole different ball game flying against humans/non-AI.

I made the same mistake as yours once, when reinstalling my computer. I should have understood what was up, sorry I was slow there. I myself never even got of the runway, and it was squad night and all.

Luckily, you haven't bought a new joystick in vain. The old one (or new one) could be "doctored" into a secondary game controller, as pedals, trim-wheels, throttle, pitch controller or whatever.

I'm glad you discovered your problem. You're better off using rudder trim vs. aileron trim to counteract the engine torque.
