View Full Version : What did you do with your time away from the Forums?

Well, I'll start. I decided to see how fast my car would go. So at 5:30 AM on thursday, I got the speedometer to about an inch and a half off the scale, which stops at 120 mph. Maybe up to 130mph, those things can't be trusted.

The other side of that coin is that the engine had more guts than it could take and while it pulled nice and strong up to the end of the speedo, now I'm tearing the motor apart to find out what is making the loud banging noise inside it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif maybe that was a mistake.

So what did you break while you were away from the forums?

Um, well, it's 55 on the road I was on....but you can't prove a thing, Officer

Bird Brain- that's kinda funny, because truth to tell, I knew something was wrong with my engine when the black Mustang Cobra that was beside my car at the time LEAPED ahead of me.

Them things are <span class="ev_code_RED">FAST</span>. I only have a 3 speed automatic. Car really wasn't designed to go as fast as it was going. I could calculate it out, but my redline is 5500 rpm. I have a 3.31:1 rear. I'm not certain, but I am fairly sure I was over-revved by a few hundred rpm...shouldn't hurt, but it sure didn't help much.

Car's still on the operating table. I'm Head Surgeon and Cheif Cusser on my car, so I'll know the full price tag tomrrow I think http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif Hey, when you play with cars, you gottta expect something to break eventually

Well, I've been away from the forums for a while. I'm trying not to let myself get burned out on IL2. I think I hit it a bit hard this summer, and instead of enjoying the weather and outdorrs, I put on 20 lbs chugging beers while conducting night bomb runs in the BF-110.

I'm really looking forward to Pcaific Fighters! I still play CFS2, just sucs online, man-o-man I can't wait for Pacific Fighters...just think...128 players in one game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

So, for the past few weeks I've been catching up on everything I've neglected, like, taking a bath, cleaning the fish tank (Their dead Jim!), and plinking around with my car. I don't think my car will ever go 130+ mph, but it feels good to finnish projects I've been thinking about for a long time. Anyone interested in seeing me fix my car can click here&gt;&gt;&gt; http://home.comcast.net/~droush/riviera_project_fender_extensions.htm

Another think that needed serious time and effort is my PC. I've been pushing my AMD Duron1.6 up to 1.9 for 2 years now and the games coming off the shelf are just to demanding! I installed DooM 3 and played that until the first monster jumped out and my fram rates went to 4, ewww http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

So, I twisted my wifes arm and talked her into leting me build another comther. This one should last me a while. I took my time, did my research, and got a credit limit increase. While reasearching PC technology on the web, I discovered the tunner culture of Personel Computers. Not just the fasted, and the most memory, these things are pieces of art that go ON your desk, not under it. Case mods, overclocking, custome neon light effects, water cooling kits (water coolers for a PC????)

So I think I did good and opted for a new rig.

Powermax, ATX 400watt case, with blue neon trim, tranaparent panels, and a 80mm blue neon case fan.
I found an ASUS X type mother board, very cool, runs 266, 333, and 400 front side bus, socket A. I installed 3gigs of ram, and an AthlonXP 3200.
I recycled my Radeon9800 pro 256, and added a Sound blaster Audigy from Creativer labs. And thats it for the guts. I got one of thos Plexor CD R/W DVD CD roms, and a Sony floppy drive that match the case..
I also opted for rounded IDE cables to aid in cooling with UV blue neon reactive sleeves.

Sounds like a Christmas tree, dosn't it? Well, it as quit as a dead cat, and give a soft blue illumination to the room. All that left is a blue wireless optical mouse an illuminated ketboard.

sweet.

See ya all in HL!

Heck no! I have never owned a Chevy. My car is mistaken for a Chevy a lot though. It's a Buick. Not the Grandpa kind http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The engine's a Buick 455 bored to 462, 10.1:1 pistons, blah blah.

The noise isn't a hollow resonant sound. I don't know what it is yet. Could be anything. I'm pulling the engine in a few hours- can't get the oil pan off in these cars with the engine in. I know guys in my club who have actually cut their crossmembers out and made a custom replacement part in that area of the frame, just so they could remove their pans with the engine in !

The noise is too low to be the cam. Much too low. The engine was at 210*F, never went over. My boil-over temp is 247*F.

I wish it weere the cam. I have a new, higher lift and longer duration one sitting here, looking lonely.

I can turn the crank over by hand with no plugs in. No tools, just grab the flexplate and turn. I didn't hear anything and it wasn't ctaching on anything. I am still baffled by what it is! I guess I'll find out today when I check out the bottom end. I'm hoping it's just a wiped out bearing that hasn't spun. Maybe something blocked the spurt hole on a rod bearing and hasn't wiped out the journal. I hope. I shut it off immediately after the noise started...

here's apic of happier times, fresh from the paint booth. No trim on her yet in the pic, I think

Built a pyramid of empty root-beer bottles, trying to drink the pain away.

Discovered that the outdoors are nice, but indoors are better.

Wept whilst at my computer, feeling I had just lost friend to reconstructive surgery. Thankfully, the surgery did wonders to the website.

Tried interacting with mankind for a few days. How very depressing it is.

Spray painted the words "IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles" onto my computer screen where the SimHQ logo is on the webpage. Squinted real hard, but seeing people who actually played CFS3 just made me sad.

Tried the Sim Outhouse forums. I will never do this again.

Checked out the Lock-On forums, discovered I'm not very good with weapon-system acronyms.

Pretended to type FB related things in different forums, unfortunately, these were CounterStike and Starcraft communities, so knowledge wasn't expected. Sometimes the occasional vacuum cleaner technical help forums sufficed.

Checked my e-mail every 3 minutes.

Listened to my entire vinyl collection, without realizing my turntable wasn't plugged in.

Dreamed and fantasized about a new and improved FB website. These were the subjects of poetry and sappy acoustic ballads.

Watched the first installment of the new Star Wars DVD collection. Wept when thinking about comparing the LA-7 to the TIE Fighter on the forums.

Went into a state of dillusion and paranoia that would make Marlon Brando in "Apocalypse Now" pale in comparison. I thanked the gods I wasn't hacked in the back by Martin Sheen to the tune of "The End" by the Doors.

Perhaps as an affirmation of a greater power, noticed that the nicest weather in Aberdeen, Washington in 8 days occurs the day the website comes back from its vacation. The weather gets even nicer the day the forums come back.

And..........OH YEAH! All this was just prelude to my 100th post as of right now.

Emann is now Centennial!

This forum is what keeps me from thinking about all of the friends I lost to colleges this year. I moped for quite a few days while this forum was offline.

Those pesky colleges. It's like nobody cares how many kids that they eat. You'd think the Law would require a college to wear a muzzle at all times. Pit bulls get a bad rap, but colleges just run amok and bite anyone they like and nobody says "boo".

A friend of mine used to have a Moped. It was fun, but it smoked a lot and we seized the engine one day.

At least you lost friends to college and aren't the friend that was lost to college like I am. I haven't flown in 2 months. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

chevy?? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif that loud banging is prob a connecting rod about to go.lots of things it could be though small chance its the cam.hows the temp when you running it ?

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

I'm hoping it's _just_ a wiped out bearing that hasn't spun. Maybe something blocked the spurt hole on a rod bearing and hasn't wiped out the journal. I hope. I shut it off immediately after the noise started...

here's apic of happier times, fresh from the paint booth. No trim on her yet in the pic, I think

Tully - right on M8! It's the smoothest front end I ever had on a bike - I can take my hand off the bar @ 80+ without a tremor. Not from the forks anyhow; my heart's another story http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Chuck - keep us UTD on the Chevy, 'n I hope it's nothing serious.

Buick. I have never owned any Chevy. I do have a Chevy 12 bolt posi in my Buick, though http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I pulled the rod caps off today. The #3 rod bearing was slightly off center, and an area of the bearing near one end of the rod half was discolored. Looks like the crank needs turning.

On the Buick 455, the crank actually goes through the timing cover, and I forgot to loosen the harmonic balancer bolt before I yanked the engine http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Oops. Now I will have to drive the hour or so up to my shop space and get my portable compressor...

I still need to check the top end, too. No use getting the crank turned and finding out you smacked a valve into a piston later on. I figure if I have the engine out, I may as well see if I floated a valve. Ah, the pleasure of playing with hot rod cars. Watch, my new heads will show up now and I won't be able to use them http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Duh! Sorry http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I had been humming Bob Dylan's "From a Buick 6" as I replied and thought "Oh, it ain't a Buick, that's the song....must be a Chevy"

Guess I need my synapses tuned!

My other, even better excuse is that I'm 55 yo today...and I've been drunk since Friday night http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I don't envy you all the lugging stuff - I allus worked on bike engines, like my XS650 Yam - I don't guess you can lift a Buick mill and hurl it on the bench so easy. Good luck with it....sure sounds like you know what you're at.

Cheers!

Well lets see I decided to do some maintenance on my machine.During a disk defrag the power
surged on and off four or five times before going off. After the power company restored the power I booted my machine only to find that
I now have four bad sectors. At this point I began to beat my head repeatedly against my desk for some time.I am now waiting on FEDEX to bring my new 74 GB WD Raptor and my APC Back UPS-200. I never thought I would need a UPS
but I guess I was wrong. A surge protector is not enough. On the bright side I'm starting my sytem upgrade early. 74 GB 10,000 RPM baby!

Good suggestion. I used to break them to, but the symptoms were a broken fan shroud!
I've been thinking about converters...I drive the car on the street, so I don't want too high a stall. Plus it's a convertible, so I don't want to flex the body TOO much http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Too bad about the GTO. Very nice cars. Did you know that the '70 GTO was the first GM car to have a major part (front fascia) designed by CAD?

You can get another one. Maybe not today, but someday. They aren't illegal- yet! I saw the back end of a Judge sticking out of a garage the other day http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

The weather here has been awesome, so of course I had the same deal as Jgd2, probably, and did my first-ever-in-life re-format, reinstall instead of chasing down a problem I probably couldn't fix if I found. My disc passes muster, but I was getting BSOD's with errors ending in ".sys" I'm not a smart man, Jenny, but I know what trouble is.

Runs nice, Cat 4.9 'cause I was feeling adventurous. I haven't completely BV'd and done the tweak to the config file and its running the same FPS as before already. Maybe its 1 fps faster. Last time around the BV hardware profile was an easy 1 fps faster.

Uninterruptable power supply will be in place tonight.

Are you going to go out looking for that black Cobra again? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

If he put about $4000 into bolt on intake & exhaust parts & a tuning chip he could be pushing about 500 hp. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I might, but I won't run him on the highway again. He's got too much gear and too many of them.

I have a chance at the stoplight Grand Prix. I make 510 lbs/ft with the engine (when it's running, lol) right now, at 2200 rpm, with an almost flat torque curve. With my new performance stuff, that'll be more like 550-575 lbs/feet and something like 420 hp at 3500 rpm.

But I have no chance against the Mustang CObra on the highway. Too much car.

Hot rod cars? lol I have always messed with 4wd trucks got to the point at one time where i could pull my motor in 45 mins and install in 120 minutes lol. The hard knock I ever had to find was a cracked piston skirt . pulled the moter out and all the way down one evening coulnt find any thing wrong so I had a beer went in and went to sleep. The next morning I got up and started to clean it up to get it back to gather and the crack in the skirt caught and ripped th rag ... DOH. My biggest cause of knocks was the stock gm flywheels I kept cracking them.after 4 or 5 gm and autostore brands i went ahead and ordered a b and m one never had a bit of problem out of that one . that truck had a 350 bored .40 over , preformer rpm intake , 650 double pumper holly , double hump heads angled milled and pollished, steel crank lighten to 39 lbs knife edged , 9.5 trw flat tops , 283 ,dur 420 lift custom cam 1.6 rockers. I have 2 uncles and a dad that race so I used to buy the parts the rules caught between seasons lol this was in a 79 chevy 4x4 half ton on 1 ton gear 6 inches of supension lift with 35- 15.50 tires it would run over 100 (all the speedo would read). 3 mpg lol
