View Full Version : Putting engine fire out and KEEPING it out

In multi-engine aircraft, when an engine catches on fire and you manage to put it out (via a dive,etc..) is there a tried and true method of keeping it from re-igniting? I have tried radiator setting open/closed, throttle off, mixture 0, etc.. and still no combination keeps the engine from re-igniting. If there isn't a way I understand. However, it would be really nice to have a fuel cutoff and fuel dump switch on multi-engine planes in BOB (that were so equipped).

Some aircraft have extinguishers...such as the P38 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Oh, sorry, that bug was actually sorted out unlike some others.

You can't put them out so that they stay out without the extinguisher. They always flare back up again which is disappointing as it would be nice to be able to cut the fuel off to the engine and hope that nothing else combustable is available to the fire.

if u dont have a fire extinguiser the best thing ive found is fly as fast as u can, and climb so i u have alt to dive and put the fire out

If you want to try to keep the plane intact, I would suggest keeping your speed above 300-350 kph. The plane will rarely burn after a dive and level flight at this speed. However, if your plane is on fire, the best course of action is usually to bail out before the flames consume the whole aircraft and kill you.

Tried killing the mixture and switching the magnetoes off?

There's got to be *some* reason for letting us flip the magneto switch. I'd be really surprised if it did anything, though. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

the only way to put an engine fire out is to crash the planes 'fire engine' into the ground breaking it off and preventing further fire. Ive done it many times, but its tricky. It works well in P38

In some WWII planes (real life, not sim), you could try going sharply vertical. This was sometimes enough to put fire out by "detaching" it, and even clear the cockpit of smoke.

Well, almost as incredible is the story of Norman Jackon who was awarded the Victoria Cross for climbing out onto the wing of Lancaster to tackle an engine fire with a hand held extinguisher. Amazingly, he lived.

Funny you should mention that because.... When I did my training in the RAF at St Athans there was a big merorial on the wall of the hangar to him

The advice to keep your speed up is correct. Even climbing like P1ngu said, is a good plan. Just keep climbing when not on fire and diving when it re-ignites. I would highly suggest NOT attempting to land though. You should bail out over your airbase or friendly territory. Usually when you get slow enough to land, your plane will re-ignite and you won't have enough time to put her down and hit refly before you're dead.

even if you do manage to stop and refly it counts as a pilot-survival but plane destroyed, same as if you hit refly after you loose a wing but before you crash.

This is true, but some people (myself included) like to try to land their plane after it has taken damage just for the challenge of it. It's not the points that matter, but the satisfaction of making it back on the runway. Anyway, damaged or not, a pilots worst fear should be fire. Bail and get out while you can.

i also suggest u use the flaming engine until it gives up or gives very low revs and power

the extra power will give u speed or height, so u can dive and put out the fire.
in the dive use full power and rads closed so u gain speed as fast as possible
