I am new to IL-2.
I am trying to finish the first single mission in the original IL-2.
I am supposed to fly to a town and protect the trucks/trains to get out.

I have no idea what I am supposed to do after I get to the town. Help please. Thanks!

Well from what your brief says you are to do. In miltary speak, go to town and protect...

Ok, go to town and fly around above area for a few minutes or so and attack any enemies that appear. It`s unlikely that nothing will happen, just be patient.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The bad guys WILL show up. From the north I think - just a couple of them. If you turn on MINI MAP ICONS on the difficulty settings you can watch their approach via non-historically accurate radar - the map.

I think when you turn back towards the base where you took off from and fly a little ways south (if I remember correctly) you'll get a MISSION COMPLETED popup.

That means that the computer thinks you successfully finished the mission and can go on to number 2.

You might only get that popup after you have landed so...Use the map and radio the tower for your vector home.

Thanks for the tips.
I pressed "A" to see what the computer would do. It dropped some bombs and then throw in to fire at some trucks in the town, and then it throw back to base...

Am I missing something?

If I recall correctly you're protecting the train and trucks from some enemy tanks/trains. To get a Mission Success you need to take out one of the bridges on the river as you approach the town then fly to the other side of town and keep some tanks and a train busy until the vehicles you're protecting get clear. The briefing covers it pretty well but you'll find the ground targets very hard to spot at first.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Thanks for the tips.

how do you know I am supposed to bomb the bridges? Like... "burn the bridges" that kinds of bridge?

And... (sorry for all these newbie questions..)
How do you tell if the trucks/tanks on the road are German or Russian?

I tried to fire whatever that moved on the road but I kept hearing people yelling in Russian... by some unknown reason.

In the 1st mission, you are tasked with defending retreating friendlies.
The enemy forces show up in blue on your map. Friendly forces show up as red. Things that you need to bomb have a yellow bomb symbol on them. If you use the right-mouse button, the map will zoom in/out to the desired closeness. When it is zoomed out, it shows more map, but it is difficult to tell exactly where a given target is. I zoom in when I get to the target zone and zoom out for distance flying.
Follow the waypoints provided to your destination. Proceed to try and destroy as many enemy forces as possible then return to your landing runway.
I'm pretty sure you have two enemy vehicle convoys, and, less sure, a train to kill.
If you use "A" (autopilot), the computer will take over and try and demonstrate what you are supposed to do; it will even complete the mission for you in most cases. In truth, I have had the computer crash the plane quite a bit, but it is certainly better at dogfighting than I am.
Also, the most boring parts of the mission, to me at least, is the long flight time to target. You can use "[" and "]" to accelerate/decelerate elapsed game time, and autopilot to speed the process up a bit.
Once you have complete a particular mission, "Mission Complete" should flash on your screen. Once that happens, land and hit "ESC" to end the mission. It will be chalked up as a success.
If you want to practice a particular type of mission or target, you can use the mission generator to select targets, maps, plane type, etc. It is pretty self-explanatory, so just bounce things around a bit until you get the mix you want.
One of the stick's on this board has a link to FAQ's and so forth. I know I have used it a ton and it has loads of useful information.

The page alsoe shows that there should be quad 23mm guns in the wings. But on pictures of the Il-10, I've never saw 4 of the same barrels sticking out of the wing. There must be a catch somewhere. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

From the Wikipedia page... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilyushin_Il-10

By decision of the State Defense Committee (GKO), on August 23, 1944, the Il-10 was put into serial production as a new ground attack plane. Its armament was similar to late model Il-2s, with two 23 mm WYa-23 cannons and two machine guns in the wings, a 12.7 mm machine gun for a rear gunner, and 400 kg, or a maximum 600 kg of bombs. Unlike the Il-2 and Su-6, initially it was meant to carry no rockets.

And also...

In 1951, due to the Korean War experience, the Soviet Air Force decided that propeller ground attack aircraft might still be useful, and decided to renew Il-10 production in a modified variant Il-10M. It first flew on July 2, 1951. It was a bit longer, with a longer wingspan, and bigger steering surfaces, with a fin under the tail. Four newer cannons, NR-23, were mounted in the wings, the payload stayed the same, and navigation equipment was newer. Its speed decreased slightly, but handling improved. In 1953-54, 146 Il-10M were made, all but 10 in factory No. 168 in Rostov-on-Don.

So apparently this is correct as we do not have the much later IL-10M version.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I also htought it had a 20mm gun, was pleasantly surprised when attacking it in a He162, that it didnt! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This book is worth every cent! There is so much information about every aircraft gun that was used or even experimented with including many photos I have never seen anywhere else. The Flying Guns of WW1 is a very good book also.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

As an additional aid for distinguishing ground forces if you have icons turned on in the difficulty settings the Padlock function (F5 for ground targets if I recall correctly) will only lock enemy targets. Be careful though, if you have icons turned off it wont distinguish between friend and foe.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

We have an early model IL-10. Only the later models had the 20MM turret, and 4 23MM's in the wing. They served in Korea.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
