I just noticed that there is an update disc that came with my stick. I never looked at the disc before, I just assumed it was a manual or similar (the other disc says 'installation software' or similar).

Does anyone know what the update actually does?

Oh! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

In what way does the update (disc) specifically alter the way the MSFF2 Joystick works?

The installation of the stick was fairly simple. The packaging has about five different warnings to read the manual before proceeding with the installation; Microsoft even went so far as to wrap the USB port of the stick with a small sticker. This is due to an incompatibility between the joystick and certain VIA motherboards, which plagued the joystick after its first shipment. All of the joysticks that are currently being sold come with a second CD containing a patch to correct this error.

Thanks very much. I was just about to load the disc and see if there were any improvements. I thought that I had hours of comparison testing ahead of me!

I wish they had come out with the fix for the via back when I purchased my origional version of this stick. I took it back because of this problem. Ended up with logistick for a couple of years till I upgraded my Mobo. The MSFF2 I have now I got used, works fine but it is an older version than the one I purchasd.

I had to format my hard drive and reinstall EVERYTHING including the MSFFB2 software. It made my stick porpoise the plane at the center position. So I removed the MSFFB2 software and let WinXP install the drivers and all is OK. It's true you don't need the MSFFB2 software in WinXP.

Footnote:
I had problems installing the stick on my new AMD 64 dual core comp'. There is a fix for the 'recorder' function in the stick's setup (which won't work on such a machine):

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/49310655/m...881074724#5881074724 (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/49310655/m/314103891/r/5881074724#5881074724)

Thanks to those who provided the fix!

This really helped, I thought I had messed up the installation before i found the fix: I had replaced the original hardware 'game controller' folder with the one from my old setup, without backing it up. I nearly cried when I got an error reading whenever I clicked the 'recorder' tab.

That fix posted by La7_S.Mat is the dogs dangly bits when it comes to MSFFB2 sticks, when my software recorder stopped working and I was no longer able to assign keypresses or macros I was stumped!
