One tiny detail has been eating me lately.

VF-1 = Fighter 1, VMSB-1 = Marine Scout Bomber 1...quite rational, but what the heck is that V in front of it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I've been wondering this myself. I think it means 'Vessel'.
Could be wrong though.
Would be nice if someone's got a link to a site which explains exactly how these letters and numbers work. I'm still trying to figure out the difference between VMF and VF, I know the M in VMF stands for 'Marines' but thats about all I know about that.

It can be for either Virtual or Volunteer.

As for the real VMF 214, which was the Blacksheep Squadron. I'm not too sure. It wasn't Virtual (LOL), I believe it was Volunteer, but could have been something else. I'll have to dig out Pappy Boyington's book to make sure.

As far as I can tell "V" is the letter that the USN and USMC us to denote fixed wing carrier borne aircraft squadrons.

I found this explanation on one site:

On naval aircraft the letter ``V'' appears with certain designations such as VF (V Fighter), VA (V Attack) and VP (V Patrol). I have asked personnel at Moffett Field what the ``V'' stands for, and nobody seems to know. What does the ``V'' stand for?

A. The ``V'' designates fixed-wing aircraft, but why the letter ``V'' is a matter of speculation, judging from the different explanations we found.

A spokesman at Navy public affairs said it came from the word ``heavy,'' as in heavier than air, which distinguished fixed-wing aircraft from the blimps once used by the Navy.

It stands for "heavier than air."

Reminds me of a long running bit of black humor among Escort carrier crews.

(Escort carriers are like mini versions of main carriers. Evidently they were hard to land on, and lightly armed and armored compared to their larger bretheren)

The designation of an escort carrier was CVE.

The joke was:
"So what does CVE stand for, anyway?"

"Combustible, Vulnerable, and Expendable."

Ak

A vet once told me that LST (Landing Ship Tank) really stood for Large Slow Target. Why are battleship designated BB and destroyers DD?

Battle ship used to be just B.
Battle ship with BELTED ARMOR is BB.
