View Full Version : What's your favorite old server?

For those of us who've been at this a while, servers have come and gone. Skies of Valor is pretty good, and the only one I fly on at this time. But I miss the Greater Green server. No other server has had the variety and quality of maps it had.

Honorable mention goes to the Virtualpilots server. I spent a lot of fun and frustrating time there. I think the best part was you could always fly the same aircraft there. It could get monotonous, but you didn't have to worry about trying to shift your technique to a different plane every hour and a half.

What server(s) do you miss?

Virtualpilots_1 is still there, just been under the name FinskaViken1 for the few last years. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

by.sturmoviks used to be great when they still had players... Never been too fancy of the Skies of - servers, got kickbanned there before I was able to take off, I asked(when, apparently, an admin was present) if in Normandy 44 it really was all about Spitfire IXc 25lbs and Tempest vs. 109G6 and FW190F8. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

Greatergreen was my favourite. These days the whole online thing just feels like mice in a wheel. I don't know what it is about the mindset of online players that make them content to do the exact same thing over and over for years.

Now, who remembers that Uhoh7 ran one of the first popular dogfight servers on Hyperlobby? It was not the hardest settings, but in the winter of 2001-2001 we did not know jack anyway.

There was a guy named "UncleIvan" that always had a server up that first winter, winter map and he flew Yak's.

In 2002-2003 Aviar ran a dogfight server with no outside views, cockpit-on and no icons that very often drew a lot of good pilots on. CrazyIvan ran a server too back then that all the well-known HL pilots would frequent.

War_Clouds has been up since about 2003 hasn't it? It still draws a lot of very good pilots in good numbers.

Greatergreen was Great. Hard settings and well run. Too bad it did not hang in there.

I spent a lot of time on VINNI_PUH server in the past, and YAMAL. YAMAL is up on HL again, and I think you can still join VINNI_PUH by direct IP, but my ping there is no good anymore.

The other day I jumped on YAMAL, and a "ROSS" squad pilot showed up right off the bat. ROSS has to be one of the oldest squads for IL2, I think they are out of Russia, and they always flew harder settings and had some very good pilots.

Repoman!, I remember you really were into the P-40 when it came out with FB were you not? We knocked heads for sure.

We lost a lot of the old pilots from back then too. Besides not seeing Uhoh7 for a long time, I remember a very good pilot, VSO, who quit when Forgotten Battles came out, saying they had ruined the sim! There was a "Moggy" that first winter who was a nice guy, but quit out of frustration of getting shot down after about a year.

Feathered_IV, I guess the rest of us still enjoy flying this sim the way we do because we just are not as smart as you, that is pretty simple huh?

I have high-def tracks up on YouTube, three of which are from 2003, from two or three old servers from back then full of a lot of the old-timers here:

The most popular year for GreaterGreen must have been around 2004. I don't think I have any tracks taken from flying on it, but I will look again. Somehow I lost all my saved tracks from that year.

You definitely go back farther than I do Jumo. I first purchased the original Il2 in early 2002. I was daunted by how difficult it was, and went back to playing Jane's WW-2 Fighters. But the lure of a more realistic ME-262 than the one in Jane's WW-2 got me to purchase Forgotten Battles. After being sure I couldn't play online because of my poor dial up connection, I actually tried it in the fall of 2003. I was surprised to find it mostly worked, even with only 28.8k.

After GG went away, I got satellite internet, and didn't play at all (online or off line) for over three years. Got a new wireless broadband internet service a year ago, and played again for the first time in years a few weeks ago. I'm not complaining that there are no good places to play, but rather remembering the best servers I used to play on that are no more.

Greatergreen was definitely my favourite http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif. When that server went down a few players that I enjoyed flying with just disappeared off the radar. I don't really fly online now, I dare say there's still the odd good server but I just don't have the same enthusiasm or patience that I did before.

Well Repo, I could have sworn I saw you most often flying for the RED side in early Forgotten Battles. I flew CFS2 on "The Zone" a lot in 2001 for a while, I had CFS2 and IL2 both on my hard-drive. But it took only a very short time flying them both to see that CFS2 could not hold a candle to IL2 Sturmovik in many areas.

One thing that most don't know or forgot about was how heavily eastern-front oriented the IL2 online experience was in it's first few years. The original IL2 was all an eastern front plane-set, and so many became experts and used to flying the eastern front aircraft that even after Forgotten Battles came out it took a while before most of the pilots and servers switched to flying western planes and maps.

Also back then most servers you flew on had trouble getting pilots to go blue! Those who specialized in flying the bf109 and Fw190 were a real minority in IL2 until around the time IL246' came out.

The original IL2 was harder to fly than the sim is now. The planes were harder to fly and gunnery was harder too. If you put the original IL2 back on your hard drive now after flying IL246 you will see a big difference.

But having the original IL2 being hard to fly made for tough training and good pilots. You had to keep learning and be good to do well and keep up with everyone else that was learning along the way.

Spits-v-109s and Zekes-v-Wildcats were my favorites.
I haven't flown online in a couple years now.
I imagine those 2 are still around.

Many here may not know, but the TgD in my name stood for The greatergreen Daemons and we were the resident squad there. We were represented by some of the best and friendliest pilots in the community. sammie and I had some long discussions when the probability came about to shut'er down and like many others, I felt like I had lost my home away from home.

My first ever online IL2 kill was Euro-Snoopy on the gg server btw. I shot him while he was on final. Bad form these days but I was as proud of it as I was of many other accomplishments I've had.

I still talk to sammie on occassion and he's talked passively about firing it back up once SoW is released (shhhhh). What better time to arise from the ashes like the phoenix...eh?

Yeah, the best old server was gg, hands down.

Oh man, Vanya. The Lance Armstrong of online flying.

Yeah Jumo, I almost always flew red, and very often a P-40 online (though the Yak-9T was another favorite - are there any servers that have a map that features that plane now?). I bought Forgotten Battles for the ME-262, but quickly tired of the style of flying you have to have to have any success with it.

It took me a long time to get over my hesitation to fly German planes online. I didn't want to fly for the axis.

Anyone else remember how strange the AI only ME-262 sounded in the original Il2?

Have to say I never got into the dogfight servers, most times it was simply a rediculous melee with little teamplay and so on....Played 2GvSAP_Dart's server a bit, yet that simply because of wanting to fly with those guys.

It's always been Co'op missions for me and some of the older 24/7 online wars that were so very well developed (though can't recall a single name)....Those though eventually became silly in folks quest for points so gaming the game and team playing horribly.

Co'ops....Where I'm at and always with a select few hosts.
