I love flight Sims but I play as a novice. Typically I play them on easiest setting, enjoying the game at its basic level. But I am looking to step up my game and learn to play as its ment to be played.

I was hoping I could get some basic advice from experienced pilots on some very basic elements of dog fighting. Hopefully the advice I recieve can start me with some elementry tactics.

1. Turning - When trying to get behind a fighter, is it best to deploy flaps and cut the throttle? Or is it better to maintain top engine power?

2. Flaps - I know the basic function of flaps....but what situations should they be deoplyed in a dogfight? There are 3 positions as well, do they each have an ideal scenario for deployment?

3.
Attacking head on - The AI always chews me up. Is there any basic strategies for a head on attack?

4. Attacking from the Side. I can never score hits when attacking from the side. I always miss and fly right by the enemy. Any advice on bringing down enemy planes from the side?

5. What is the easiest plane to handle in AEP to begin learning the game?

6. Any good tutorial sites that are tailored to those starting their virtual career?

-1- You'r dead already...
-2- Flaps are for reducing speed (if not too fast) or turning quicker (still not too fast)
-3- Head on is Dead = Dead - never do that unless a REAL BIG engine infront of you

1/2 turning .... hmmm it depends on the planes... if you like turning get a "****" plane (they are realy not ****) - get a double decker - they turn ! no one can match that turn - they have to ZnB - or get killed by you

Well, I´m not a pro... just a medium fighter but I think I can give you some advises:

-Basic concepts:
You will need to know the concept of ENERGY (E). E is a bit difficult to explain (I´m from Spain and don´t speak English very well...;-)

The combination of your speed and your altitude is what is called your E. Think that speed is a KEY in a dogfight... If you go faster than the other you can catch him or u can run away from him. If you are high you can dive to get speed, if you are fast and low you can climb... notice how both variables can be transformed on each other... When you climb you reduce your speed but get more alt son your E doen´t is reduced. This is Potential Energy...

*Loosing E: When you TURN you loose speed but your altitude is just the same, depending the plane you fly you will loose more or less speed so be careful with it. YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE PLANE YOU ARE FLYING very well to be a dangerous weapon instead a flying aim http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Known this, there are two principal tactics depending the plane you fly:

-Boom&Zoom: Used for German fighters above all... P-47 and P-38 too. This tactic is used for planes that loose too much E in turns so, get very high (3000m for ex.) seek an enemy above you and dive to him to get a lot of speed... you will only have a few secounds to shoot him and climb again using you high speed... he can´t follow you if you failed your shoot http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif if this is the case try again...
This is a medum-advanced tactic

Turn&Burn: Just use any Russian a/c specially I-16 and biplanes. Start turning arround your enemy until u have him on your 12. He could not turn as fast as you http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Now your questions:

FLAPS: In combat do not low your flaps!!! they will make you loose speed. The only exception is to use combat flaps temporaly to turn faster when you follow a bird that can outturn you http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Frontal Attack: Pratice is the only advise here http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Attacking from the side: You will need to learn DEFLECTION SHOOTING: Think that bullets need a time to reach the target so you will have to aim "where the plane will be when the bullet reach to him" this is slightly in front of him depending how fast he is going and how distance is between you and him... again a lot of practice is needed ;-)

I find that if I keep the AI aircraft at my 10 o'clock, or 2 o'clock, rather than directly head on, and then execute a climbing barrel roll (or some other manoeuvre that increases the lead that they require) then you should escape being shot down. After the barrel roll try to manoeuvre in the vertical plane whilst scanning the sky for where the enemy aircraft are.

Other than that what Guillermo says is a better explanation than I can manage.

The concept of E is very important. The interconvertability of altitude and airspeed. Under almost no circumstances surrender E to an opponent. The only exception I can think of is if you are flying IL2 (fairly slow, can take a lot of damage and has a big cannon up front) and get jumped by German fighter (high stall speed), you may be able to force an overshoot by throttling back and dropping flaps, but a desperate situation anyway.

In your FB folder, open the Conf file using Notepad and change
Arcade=0
to
Arcade=1
This will leave markers where your bullets strike. It's a good way to learn deflection shooting.

If you want to learn fast, turn on all difficulty switches except Padlock, Icons, Speedbar and External View. When you get comfortable with these settings give full real a try.

In Quick Mission Builder, the C47 makes a dandy target. It's slow, large and it can't hurt you if you don't collide with it.

When you can reliably shoot down AI fighters, go to Hyperlobby and start learning from the guys online.

1.use a good turn fighter (LA7for beggining)use even landing flaps --- but not over 380kmh or they'll get jammed, always on the edge of stall; some fighters turn better on high speed some better on low; use LA7 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

3. deploy head on little below enemy fighter - I use that tactic - or about 500m or higher then dive on 'em. Start shooting at distance of 0.85 (850m) little above enemy A/C(this however takes practice)

4. deflection shooting... cannot help u... this is extremely difficult... rarely use it myself. It is mostly a wate of ammo. This tactic is good against bombers and mostly nothing else.

5. Try LA7, Yak3(P), Bf109G2, I185, Ki84

Gotta interject here-

Labbit, I must disagree with you.

Flaps are not for reducing speed or really for turning 'quicker'

They are for generating extra lift, and do so by virtue of the shape of the airfoil. Deploying flaps changes that shape. They can allow you to turn more tightly, because they give you extra lift in a tight turn by allowing you to make that turn without stalling. In FB, we have a strange system for flaps, and I think that the terms "combat", "landing" and "takeoff" shouldn't be used, it should be displayed in degrees of flap deployed. Certain aircraft were historically described as having "combat" or "manuevering" or even "fowler" flaps, but I really think that giving the 5* flap a general name of "combat flaps" in FB is un-necessarily confusing.

Devices called 'spoilers' can reduce speed and lift, as they literally 'spoil' the airflow over the wing. A flap can slow the aircraft down because of drag, but by definition it cannot do a spoiler's job because the flap is for extra lift.
