I'm planning to upgrade my GeForce 6800 Ultra to one of these cards and I only play IL-2 1946.

Your feedbacks on any of these cards are greatly appreciated.

I built a new computer just before hollydays.
Not big deal, just basic gaming rig. Q6600, 2gigs DDR2@1066Mhz (corsair dominator), EvGA 8800GTS 512MB(G92).
After few days of use the videocard just died on me so until i get the replacement (under waranty) i got myself a basic XFX 8800GT 512MB.

I have to say the card is just great. It can Eat up IL-2 At 1680x1050 with all the options available in the game and conf ini at max and 8Qx AA 16 Aniso filters.
I haven't tried the new ati cards but from what i read ( and i did quite a bit of research before getting the parts for my rig), the new ati cards are not able to keep up with the 8800GT and they lost a bit of the legendary image quality ATI cards had.
So i htink the only advantage ati has is the price, that simply because their HD3850/HD3870 are at a lower performance level.
The 8800GT is quite cheep card for what it offer and it is right now the best bang for the buck you can get.
I went for the GTS 512 simply because of the extra performance and better cooling solution with dual slot cooler. (better for overclocking).
Between the cards you mentioned i'd take the 8800GT without even thinking twice. That extra juice makes a big difference in Crysis http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

I know this isn't what you asked m8 but I was thinking along similar lines. Then I heard a m8 of mine upgraded to a 3870, changed from AMD to Intel, new ram and PSU and overclocked his CPU to 3 gbs. All he got was an increase of 5 fps on Black Death. Seems to me and others, that il2 may be limited.

Since the only game I play is il2, I have decided to wait until a few more months. If Nvidia releases their 9000 series cards, I suspect the price of the 8800's will drop a fair bit.

But I agree with Jaws, the 8800GT is a better card.

I would wait until the prices drop more, the IL2 engine is old and upgrading won't really do much for you. I had to get a new card because my 6800 died.

I bought an 8600GT as a stop-gap. Runs IL2:1946 fine unless you crank the anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering beyond 4x.

I was running a X1900XT and just felt like a change (well, COD4 forced the issue).

I put a 3870 into my comp, runs with a dual core4400 and two gig 3200.

I will say the image quality is still excellent but the fps is perhaps only a tiny fraction more than the X1900.

3870 is cheaper then 8800GT but this was not the deciding issue for me, it was IQ.

Went from a 1950pro to an 8800GT... At 1024x768 in perfect with water equals 2 I can run 16xAA (Q) and 16xAF and still average well over 50 in BD.

8800GT very powerfull card and I got mine for about 150 in the end.

I went from 7800GT to HD3850 and didn't see much improvement in BD or overall. Although other games run clearly better now, IL2 doesn't.

Go for 8800GT, if you can find one, if IL2 is of priority. I don't think 3850/70 is a bad card, no, but I didn't get big rewards with it in IL2.

Have any of you with the newer (G92) cores experienced the texture flashing that's been plaguing us GTS320MB and GTX640MB users?

Yep. i had them with both the evga 8800GTS 512 and xfx 8800GT 512. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

Can't you lower you AN and AA and bump to higher rez ?

For Il2 I'd go with the 8800GT, the 3870 is just as good in most other applications but il2 performance seems to be lacking in the newer ati cards.

Ahhh bummer. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif Maybe I'll wait for the 9800 or try to find a 7950GX2.

Yeah but Crysis looks glorious. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I got the EVGA for the step up program. Now i just hope 9800comes out before March 21-st. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif This way i have good card now and will have to put down just the difference when the 9800 shows up.

We still have no cure for the flashing on the 8800 cards?

Honestly I have the same card as the OP, and I have been toying with the idea of getting an 8800 as well, but it would seem a bummer to bump up my framerates but then have this flashing thing begin.

Does this affect only users with a certain combo of hardware, or is it just everyone who has an 8800 period?

1024x768 at 16x aa 16x an .. ? why?

I run it at that rez because it is the native IL2 one,,, seems dots are easier to see. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

I crank the AA and AF that high basically because you can with these cards. I play mostly on WC and use t/speak overlay so I have a fps counter up all the time. Rarely does it drop below 40... I do get the flashing though!!

Come to think of it I'm stuck in a Rut.. am gonna see what 1600x1200 looks like right now... might play an offline campaign.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks for all quick replies. I currently play the game on a Samsung SyncMaster 24" at the resolution of 1900x1200. The GeForce 6800 Ultra gave me an average FPS between 25-35 online with the following
settings:

- Antialiasing and Anisotropic are controlled by Application
- Image setings: quality
- Perfect mode with water=2

All I want is to be able to play IL-2 the game in Perfect Mode even with Anialiasing=4x and Anisotropic=4x.

Input on any video card that produces the desired results is much appreciated.

Thanks again for all your replies.

A little advice going for 1600x1200 is great .. but.. you will not see the dots anymore evem if you really don't need it in WC.. try to go for 1280x1024 or 1152x864 with 4x4 aa and an or you can try a mx of 8.. but 4 x 4 and a little bit higher resolution you will still see dots far and enjoy 1000 % better quality.

As for the native resolution well it's bad.

VN-philong for not very strong cards and want to fly on perfect try Water=0 and effect=1 or 0( not to loose much FPS while fighting with others )

Really is a case of being stuck in a rut. Just tried playing on 1600x1200 on a single mission, P47's straffing the Hungarian Airfield... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Like that mission, going in low. Looked great. Am gonna do a little fiddling on the strength of this..

My 7950GX2 still eats IL2 alive. Like GOZR, I get ridiculous frames at 1680x1050, 4xAA, 8xAF. I've been looking into getting a new VC, but really can't justify it right now since mine still runs everything quite well. However, those 8800GT 1gb cards in SLI may prompt me to jump: http://www.gainward.net/product/product_detail.php?products_id=149
http://techreport.com/discussions.x/13752

or maybe even the next-gen of the single-slot SLI, the 9800GX2: http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTQzOSwxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==

That looks interesting and is within my step up timeline. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

Now why would they choke the memory bus like that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif Just like the curent G92 cards. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif It sucks not to have competition in GPU market. Just likr in CPU market. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Intel To Delay Three 45nm Quad-Core CPU Launch

Intel has recently adjusted its product strategy and will postpone three 45nm quad-core CPUs that were originally scheduled to launch in January next year, according to sources at motherboard makers.

Intel has already notified its partners that it will push back the launch of the three CPUs to February or March next year, depending on AMD's schedule for triple-core and the upcoming Phenom CPUs.

Launching the CPUs now will not benefit Intel much in its battle with AMD, while they could cause damage to Intel's 65nm quad-core CPUs, therefore the company has decided it is in no rush to release new products until AMD is able to present more of a threat.

The three CPUs that Intel plans to delay are the Core 2 Quad Q9300, Q9450 and Q9550, added the sources.

Intel commented that its launch of 45nm quad-core CPUs for desktops is on track for first quarter 2008, but declined to disclose a specific time-frame." http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif
