View Full Version : This game has some good times in it.

I am enjoying the game despite a few bugs here and there, but this just made my day. On my second patrol on Feb 17th 1942 at approx 2:04 AM I was sailing back from my completed mission in the China Sea and decided to check out the Luzson Strait since I heard a lot of activity was in the area. It was all going smoothly apart from the subchaser groups. I sat back and put on the gramaphone but then something came out of the horizen, a few things actually... I just wanted to share my joy and surprises which the game has brought me so far. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

3x Akizuki Destroyer
2x Fubuki Destroyer
1x Kuma Light Destroyer
1x ****atsuyu Destroyer
2x Mutsuki Destroyer
1x Minekaze Destroyer
1x Naka Light Cruiser
1x Asahio Destoyer
2x Maya Heavy Crusier
1x Mogami Heavy Crusier
2x Yamato Battleship
1x Fuso Battleship
2x Large Modern Tankers

It was great! I really enjoyed it, in SH 3 I usually only get small ecounters with about 2 capital ships and a couple of escorts with them.

Here is the screenshot of the map, a few destroyers are ahead of my sonar.

Finally some good news! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

Yeah, it was a real eye opener, it just steam rolled through the pacific after I tried to get a few pot shots in of course.

03-20-2007, 06:49 PM
Wow! That sure is one large collection of warships. Even after two years of SHIII and 6 campaigns, I've never seen such a huge grouping. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

If you don't mind me asking, what's your hardware setup and what graphic settings is the game set at? Because, despite all the mass complaints about how horrid the game looks (FSAA/locked resolution, etc), those screens look absolutely mind-blowing.

Argh, tomorrow can't come soon enough.

03-20-2007, 06:53 PM
COOOL! Good news at last!
Tell me though, do the life boats actually come down the side of the ship, or do they just kind of appear?

03-20-2007, 06:56 PM
Sure thing.

AMD X2 Athlon 4400+
X1900XTX ATI Saphire 512MB

I had the graphics on full apart from post photo process and the full glare since it looked blotchy at night time on the screen and post photo just made it a huge mess. It's in the resolution 1280 x 720 though, I would have turned the gamma up but since it was 2 AM in the morning it would have ruined the "darkness" of the japanese fleet at that point.

Cangri! makes me wanna buy this game even more!

03-20-2007, 07:08 PM
You're right, this should be fun. It will be nice to tangle with a large task force instead of the small ones encountered in most other games.

03-20-2007, 07:24 PM
From what I've seen the life boat just spawn next to the ship when it is finally sinking/sunk.

03-20-2007, 07:31 PM
You seem to be the first to post SH4 screenies, you will be a part of history. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

03-20-2007, 08:03 PM
Sorry to bug you again Mando86, but what size monitor do you happen have (native resolution)?

And, going back to your screens, it looks like there are white caps on the waves after all. Those are the first shots I've seen that actually had them. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

03-20-2007, 08:15 PM
20 inch TFT widescreen and it's normally set on 1152x864.

03-20-2007, 09:05 PM
I see some jagged egdes on them shots but nothing like what was posted over at subsim, makes me wonder about an email I got a few days ago in my spam account.

03-20-2007, 11:36 PM
WELL DONE Mando86 ! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif you are the very first person I have heard of who has come across the Great Yamato BB...or indeed as in your case 2 of them ! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Your post wasnt clear, you were too excited I guess LOL...did you get a shot off at her ??

Either way, great subbing there mate ! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif

The first person on this forum to sink the Yamato (all 71,000 tons of her)plus photo evidence will be famous I suppose lol http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

Very, very nice !! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Yes I did sink it I can proudly say, even though I am not an expert SH3 like many here. Here are the screenies I had. I had been shadowing both battle ships for a while and I was losing them but then they change course NW and both battleships just ran straight across my periscope path. I fired 4 into the first passing one and 3 into the second one. Here id the second's damage caused. The first one just exploded in a ball of flame and it was all over before I could say "Ship Sunk", must have got lucky and hit a magazine bunker. The second floated for a part a while but I guess those three huge holes in her hull was too much for her and she went beneath the waves. I completely forgot to post what happened and that's the reason I came over here. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Man, that would have been one hell of a history fluke - the Yamato and the Musashi, sunk by the same sub!

They give out Presidential unit citations for that sort of thing, you know.

03-21-2007, 09:23 AM
Yeah I think the whole Japan Navy was out for a stroll. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Nicly done... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif Going to be the first of the SH4 100K club.

Tambor, I almost did the same thing today just so I could be there waiting on te Fedex truck but came to work......I need help. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

My sub took a heavy price though, on the journey home due to the escort damages I nearly sank 5 times. I am just glad there are massive task force, I only wish a US task froce could have intercepted it and watch a huge battle erupt.

nice work!

i had a mission like that although i was destroyed before i could do anything...

one think i noticed is that the game doesnt stick to historical ship numbers and doesnt take ships out of the game....in 1942 i was docked at freemantal and in port were 3 early fleet carriers so i left port went to the mission came back and went to brisbane....3 more fleet carriers and 2 iowa class battleships...plus a king george..okay cool i thought but then i went on patrol in honshu and came across 6 hiryu class carriers this is ridiculous but what ensued was worse...i sank one with two torps to the stern...then the rest grounded and destroyed themselves with there aux ships and a destroyer...

conclusion the game isnt smart in the sense when you sink ships it will respawn them...kinda kills the historical fact of it...unlike SH3 where when you destroyed a ship your chances of seeing it again were slim to none since it was rare you actually saw task forces unlike in sh4 where task forces are everywhere....the most ships iv run across so far...
task forces, convoy's of sampans, junks and fishing boats, and the occasionally European lux liners that fly..even on the surface your 20 knots is no match for them...i have come across 1 convoy of ships and it was only 6 ships and 1 smaller convoy of tanks in the Solomon straits with no escorts....other than that im mostly chasing warships and sampans...i may never get 100k especially since i usually run out of gas chasing warships...

Given a choice, I'll take the target rich environment.

I'm very impressed so far with SH4.
I didn't bother with reading the 'locked at 1024x768' threads, just thought i'll wait intil it's on my rig and make an opinion!

I have an AMD64 3500+, 1gig dual channel PC3200, GeForce 7800GT 256mb PCI-E and SB Audigy 2ZS. -Nothing great, but i can play this 1600x1200 (I have a good old CRT) and all effects on and it's quite incredible! Sure it has the odd jaggie but i found out that if you don't force AA/AF and leave it on 'application' it looks better.
I'm an 'old' SH2/3 fan and find that this is the best yet! (the small things like planes sliding off of decks, the HUGE explosions reflecting off the sean and plumes of smoke going hundreds of feet upwards and the new damage holes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif realy grab you by the short and curlies!
Bugs -yes, but they haven't been show stoppers for me so far.
The GUI will take a few mins to get your head around, but it's pretty easy once that's done. Going back to SH3 after barely 2hrs playing is like SH2 to 3 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

One word sums up SH4

I agree with you on the battleships being rare after you sink a certain type (a major one though ). I haven't really come across aircraft that much apart from a lone zero who likes to kill my bridge crew.
