Just heard this story on the radio and had to post a link to the web content. During the battle for Nanking Japan attacked and sunk the USS Panay, a U.S. warship patrolling the Yangtze river.

The Panay was tasked with rescuing Americans from Nanking so reporters with cameras were on hand when she went down. An excellent news reel and interview with a survivor can be found here.

It's hard to tell but it looks to me like a Val in the film footage.

Great timing! I am making a "Sand Pebbles" mission (after re-watching the film for the first time in several years) depicting running the blockade and this now gives me another idea for a companion mission.

Thanks! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

HMS Ladybird was also involved in the "Panay Incident". Here's a link showing some rare film of her return to Shanghi and some of the damage caused. http://hmsfalcon.com/Panay/Panay.htm
