View Full Version : Knights of the Sky information blackout. Rumors? Insights? Speculation?

We've enjoyed Old Testament style weekly updates for almost a year now. Recently their website was pulled with the following message:

<span class="ev_code_YELLOW">"Dear friends! We have alot of changes here, and cause of that we need to take a break in our updates for a bit. Ask your questions on our forum. Cya later!

Дорогие друзья! Приносим извинения за временное прекращение обновления информации на сайте. На вопросы ответим на форуме. Увидимся в ближайшее время.

KOS Dev Team."
</span>

Now what do you suppose that means? Did Oleg get appointed as head of their PR department? Is the Spad company holding them ransom for breach of copyright????

All crackpot theories welcome. But to get the ball rolling, here's mine: Gennadich has recently signed up KotS with a certain French company for distribution. They are now subject to an NDA. Release of the demo is imminent!

Your turn....

I hope it is true - I'm tired of trying to replicate ww1 with tb-3's and I-153's! (though there are some truly amazing ww1 themed skins out there for our early a/c!)

Well, they did say, "..if you have any questions go to their forum...".

Let us know what they say, please, as I'm quite interested but don't have the time to babelfish pages and pages of forum threads.

Yeah, they announced some great news, when the website is back on. So does 1C for ages, not even daring to speak about Oleg's regulary-updates-starting-from-July-be-sure. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

As speculation over the information blackout of Knights of the Sky continues, new information suggests that Microsoft is said to have paid an undisclosed six-figure sum for the exclusive rights to the KotS game engine. Earlier moves for MS to absorb the Gennadich Team outright were initially turned down by GT, but are once again "under review".

It appears Microsoft are intending to jump start their re-entry into the combat flight simulation genre by purchasing a ready made, next generation game engine that can compete on equal or greater terms to the next offering by Oleg Maddox.

The source says that MS have shelved plans to adapt the FSX engine to the CFS genre, and have instead resolved to concentrate on the "local area" style of maps perfected by the Il-2 and future BoB/SoW series . The same undisclosed source went on to add that Microsoft intends to, "Beat them at their own game".

Wewy intewesting.

Seems 'Deepthroat' knows more about the capabilities of the SoW engine than we do (wouldn't be hard as I feel like the proverbial mushroom) although their emphasis on small scale maps perhaps indicates that when MS says it intends to ""Beat them at their own game," they mean Il-2 and not SoW: BoB. Good luck to 'em I say.

I'd heard the Projekt Galba map would include the whole of the Korean peninsular and include parts of Japan in the south and China in the North. There's a shot in one of the SoW vids that show a map of the English Channel thats probably 150 miles across, SoW maps will have the potential to be large.

From SoW Vid.

Google Map of approximately the same area 150 miles across.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y289/mctomney/EngChan01.jpg

Of course, compared to a global map, all maps are small and some Il-2 maps are pretty large, the Crimea map being about the same size as the Channel map above.

Great - MS? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif
I can see the "features" list for KoTS already:

Grass that really GROWS during the campaign!
Realistic pilots voiced by actors from the hit movie Flyboys!
Pilot modeling to include accurate sweat drip physics and silk scarves in 3D!
Actual simulated "old timey" paper backgrounds for flight briefings - with narration by actors from the hit movie Flyboys!
Realistic radar tracking of enemy positions - including loos!
Dynamic "atmosphere" modeling with moving cows and seasonal accurate flocks of birds!
Exciting and Fun mini-games to include "fishing by the airfield", "Chasing french prostitutes", and "card playing in the officers quarters" - with voices provided by actors from the hit movie Flyboys!

If GT makes a good deal ( meaning they keep their freedom ) having MS as a publisher says only one thing: Heavy money.
You can say what you want about Microsoft but they can pay hard dollars.
Maybe they've even learned a bit from CFS III and FS X - the latter beeing hands down the best sim on the market since the patch.

It will probably work out ok - the interesting thing is that the post indicates MS bought the "engine" so perhaps KoTS is already wrapped up.

Seems like the recent activity of the Gennadich Team, porting their Fokker Dr1 and portions of WW1 scenery over to FSX might make truth even stranger than fiction. I wonder......

http://www.gennadich.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5072

Perhaps Gennadich really do have something going with the big M. A game developer does not casually frisbee a piece of their upcomming work into the game of a rival developer without at least getting their respective lawyers together.
Something is afoot here....
