Didn't they have a weapons officer that did this? I play with realism topped out except for this aspect of the game. Just wondering.

At my knowleadge the navigator did this, The captain or maybe the wheapons officer looked in the periscope and called out the bearing of the ship and range, while the sonar man counted the props turn to get the speed of the ship.

Heres some more info http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/lostsub/torpfire.html

Watch Das Boot for what I assume are fairly realistic scenes of how this worked.

Watch Das Boot anyway, one of the best films ever.

hehe. its one of my fav flicks. that's why i asked. all prochnow does is point the periscope, barks which tubes and spread, then says fire. so why does my *** doing trig add to a uboats realism when I can tell hanz and fritz to do it. Los Los!

When I read Iron Coffins I got the impression that the exec put info into the tdc and fired the torps.
