Are the handgun and sniper rifle the only weapons Sam is able to use?

Are you guys going to release a demo before release?

PS2 and GameCube owners are DIEING to get a definitive answer to Xbox's (and PC's) exclusiveness to this game. Is it 6 months? a year? forever?

please let us know

I have been told by electronic boutique canada that a demo will be available early october to customers who have placed pre-orders... I have pre-ordered and I am dying for the demo. Can we expect it any time soon???

There only one way to know... ask them =P

Can AI get scared if/when you turn on the lights and suddenly see you? Can you hold them up if you get them off guards or can you only take them hostage? (either way, this is awsome)

BTW, I've posted this on the german forums (but i prefer english since my german sucks =)

I'm editing a Splinter Cell (fan =) promo video.
I've already done some preliminar work on it but still, it's Work in Progress. =P

My main question is, why aren't the devs using antialiasing. It is very noticiable in screenshots and on high quality tvs. It makes the amzing graphics lose their finess.

Also I would like to ask what each button does? if it is not to much trouble.

Hi PLTorr,

In terms of fire arms, handgun and SC-20K multipurpose riffle are the 2 weapons Sam can use in the game. At a certain point in the development, we wanted to enable Sam to pick up its enemies'guns. We didn't do it for 2 reasons:

- Realism: real special ops operatives are not using any other equipment than their own equipment. You don't know what to expect, it's too dangerous.

- Gameplay : it is hard to balance a good stealth gameplay if you can get a new gun at anytime. We didn't want the game to become a shooter...

Hope this answers your question.

i have a couple of questions for the techies>>

1> gameplay looks awesome but are the camera controls gonna be as goofy as dead to right's?

2> and will the controls be a little more functional than DTR?

DTR is a great game; it has some very difficult levels. They almost overwhelm if you just try to rush in shooting.i've learned to take my time --and watch my back

but the challenge is what i crave - not beating a game so quick ya feel like ya missed something

hope it's as great a challenge as DTR is--i know it looks more impressive than DTR

and i like the stealth theme of the game

i beat rainbow six ghost recon on PC--loved plannin the missions and doin the stealth thing

all in all it looks like y'all have a winner!!!!!!!

Yes the producers will be posting in this thread very soon. I'd like to keep this thread related to questions about the game so please try not to flood it with other things.

2) Will you have demo disks for the game before it comes out?

Hello.

My first question is this, according to this thread,

http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view-topic.asp?name=splintercell_gd&id=zzzud

The IGN link within it it states :

"Visually, Splinter Cell looks impressive, although not quite as nice as the Xbox version. Because Ubi Soft is shooting for minimum requirments of a GeForce 2, some of the neat effects associated with the GeForce 3 equipped Xbox won't be in the PC version."

http://pc.ign.com/articles/369/369534p2.html

My first question is this? Is this true.

Second. If it is, Why did the developers choose to town it down for PC instead of just allowing players to adjust their own graphics settings in a menu according to their system specs. What about people with High end machines, should they miss out?

It also seems a little odd for such a new game since most gamers have at least a Geforce 3. Another reason it doesnt seen to make sense is that you can now buy a Geforce 4 for an inexpensive price (below $179) and with the new Nvidia NV30 coming soon, high end graphics boards that are more powerful than a Geforce 3 are now available to mainstream users.

Another question is the whole, Xbox exclusivity for consoles. I can understand time exclusivity, but will it ever come to gamecube or PS2. I understand Splinter Cell is using the Unreal engine, so that can be used as a reason. But at the same time, The Lost also uses the Unreal Warfare engine and that is going to PS2.

Last question is, can you please describe how the game will control for PC. Will the controls be similiar to other 3rd person action games like Hitman 2 and Max Payne, or will they be very different.

Thanks in advance for clearing things up.

I also want to know if and why the PC version has a different graphics core. The game was built on the Unreal Engine and it wouldn't make any sense to remove dx8 features that are part of the engine.

Ok, first of all, That post just didn't make sense. You use A for an, and there are many other glarring gramatical errors. Also, I hope people don't start saying stuff such as, "Hey, where the #&!! are the producers?", because, as we all should know, they are on a busy schedule putting the finishing touches on the game, and we wouldn't want them to slack off trying to answer all of our questions, now would we? Well, as for a question, I guess my main one would be: where did you come up with the idea for this game (a serious question, no dissing, just asking)? Also, what are the possibilities of either A. A book being made of or based on SC, Or B. A sequel being made of SC?

XyZspineZyX

I was wondering about the aiming. I have heard you can not invert your aim in the demo. Is there an option in the final build? This feature should be a given in all games of this sort buy now. I prefer having a natural control over my crosshair and when I move my right stick up I aim up and when I aim down it's down. The option to choose is only fair.

There is a playable Splinter Cell demo.

It is already available at Toy'R Us in USA (when bying an Xbox...).

It will also be on the DVD of the December issue of OXM (Offical Xbox Magazine) in North America, in stores in about 2 weeks.

This demo is the 3rd section of the first mission in Tbilisi. As this part of game play is very early in the game, gadgets are not all available. However, you'll already have the chance to get familiar with the controls and to try different ways of playing this short mission.

Hi Kurashu,

The AI is reacting to any change in the environement: lights, bullet impacts, objects or gadget thrown, etc. If you switch off a light, the NPC should try to reach the switch to turn it back on. If it detects you, there will be a very short gap before shooting at you...
You can grab a character from behind to interrogate him or force him in a safe zone to knock him down. You can also use the NPC as a human shield.

Hope this answers your question.

Dynamic1.

In response to your questions, here's some information.

Regarding the minimum requirments for PC, it is true that we want the game to run on a GForce2. However, this dosen't mean that it will leave high end user behind. We are currently working to adapt all the SFX. Our goal is to make sure that both high end machines and lower specs can enjoy the game. We needed to work a little more for GeForce2 because many features need to be adapted. Hard core gamers are equiped with a GeForce3 or more, but you'd be surprise to know that many gamers are still playing with a GeForce2...

Splinter Cell is Xbox exclusive in 2002 and will also be available on PC. You are right about Unreal technology that is also available on PS2. But, I have not much to say about PS2 and GC right now.

Regarding the controls on PC. The free camera will be controlled with the mouse, which is quite interesting for a 3rd person game.

Hope this answers your questions.

It would be really interesting to get different reaction from the NPCs. Maybe even hold them up. But that's not the case.

Well... NO. =P
It's a collection of videos I scavenged from the 'Lot' (ign, gamespot, etc) and put a music with it. It's far from finished. Too bad I ain't got more videos of moves Sam performs, since it's basically about that. (the music I used for now is 'Body Moving' by Beastie Boys, you know, body moving? =) Anyway, it's coming along slowly, since only now I'm working with After Effects... =P

How about some exclusive videos so i can do a really nifty Promo video for Splinter Cell!?

Umm, so you mean the mouse won't be used to make Sam look around or aim..but rather be used like in the Soul Reaver 2 PC port just to move around him and serve no real purpose except to make cool screenies/movies?

splinterTim :

you need to use the mouse to look in a different direction than the one you are moving into. This is a key element as you can keep an eye on the enemy while doing another action...
Moreover, as soon as you select a weapon, the camera switch to what we call a "2nd person view". In this position, you need to use the mouse to aim and the controls are quite close to a 1st person control. Same system to throw an object like a soda can.

Don't worry, controls are modified and you'll feel like playing a PC game.

If you go to the homepage of Splinter Cell it has a rating of 'T' with Blood and Gore and Violence.

I'm pretty sure it'll look realistic. I don't want it to be over the top.

Does the AI provide the NPC with different options to reacting to different situations? Such as turning on the light or calling for backup in certain situations, Basically does the NPC choose a optimal solution to handling a strange situation.

I've got a question: How cold is it up there in Canada, and did the extreme cold affect the development of the game in any way? Oh, and here's a real question: Did you guys use motion capture for Sam's movements, or did you just make them with the computer?

I have another Demo question for you guys. If I were to preorder SplinterCell right now from EBGames would they send me a demo within the next few days or not? I can wait here at my store for the game, but If a demo is out and preordering gets me that demo then iam gonna preorder right now!/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ....

1) Can you interact with objects in the game?

- For example, pick a book up off of a desk and throw it into a hall? Or is it just certain things like soda cans and bullet clips?

2) Do guards move slow and sweep the area looking for you after they have seen you? Or if they cant find you do they just act like nothing happened? ( Or like in MGS2 do they stay on alert for a few mintues, then slowing become unaware)

Thankyou for any answers you give me.

This game looks extreamly AWSOME and i can hardly wait.

And for the other question, yes, its pretty cold over here!

Dear Monsieur Ferland,
Hello. How are you doing? I have two questions for which I would appreciate answers, but of course it is up to you. The first one is very important:
1. Is it possible to turn off the appearance of blood in Splinter Cell, as in Rainbow Six, Rouge Spear, and Deus Ex?
2. If you do not mind my asking, what is Samuel Fisher's back story? For example, where was he born? To whom? When? Is he married? (I would presume not.) How much does he weigh? How tall is he? What is his ethnic group? Does he speak any other languages? How was he recruited? Since his work is strenuous, how often does he deploy? When not in the field, how often does he rest? Where? How?
Thank you very much for your time and attention.

Hi,
I didn't know that Mathieu Ferland actually replied to us mere mortals! Hi Mathieu.... This game looks the best since sliced bread. No it's better than that!!! I had ghost recon but it was a bit dull compared to Splinter Cell!!! I reckon UbiSoft have done wonders to Tom Clancy's franchise!! Well done!
Anyway, what is the official release date for it on xbox in the uk. My local computer game shop dude said 1st of Nov. Is this true?
And will 1 shot, head shots take them down because there's been some speculation? Can you shoot them in the leg and they'll fall on it, etc?
Thanks a lot!!!

P.S the game looks GR8!!!!!!!

Hello,
I'm back.

Regarding the blood... there are light splashes of blood when Sam is shot. There are also traces of blood in some levels, especially animal blood in the slaughterhouse level. However, this game isn't "gore" at all and isn't based on shooting at everyone. You can even walk through the game without killing anybody (except the final bad guy...). To me, there is no need for blood to create a realistic game. Other games like MOHAA proved it and so will Splinter Cell.

Regarding your second question about Sam Fisher's background. There will be a complete description of Sam coming soon on this site.

Mathieu

Hello again,

Hey, animations for Sam are all hand drawn by Steve and the animation team.
We've tested motion catpure in an early stage of development, but it didn't felt like what we wanted to accomplish... It's like acting. Sometimes actors need to exagerate a movement or a facial expression to communicate a feeling properly.
The same principle is used in animation and this is why we didn't used a lot of motion capture.

Does the game feature quick save/load? Is there any difference in that respect between the PC and Xbox versions?

Quick saving does have its bad points such as lowering tension and suspence but I find it to be a god send in such games as Splinter Cell which rely on trail and error.

Anyway, good luck with the game, even though its getting a lot of plaudits it doesn't seem to be whipping up a fever as some other games.

XyZspineZyX
10-18-2002, 12:59 PM
I think I can answer those.

The game asks you if you'd like to save at some key points.

Like, you manage to sneak by a guardpost and reach the alley behind the building, bam, "want to save? Yes/No" and you go on.

Content wise Xbox and PC versions will be the same. If you mean visually, there might be diferences if you have a Geforce 2 or lower. Since splinter cell engine uses some Geforce 3 (and higher) features.

Thanks, I didn't really mean in content about the differences between the versions, its just that you rarely see quick saving in a console game (even with the Xboxs HDD).

Well, I hope they balance the save points correctly...

1) for the pc version of the game, will we be able to create mods/levels/models etc using the unreal tournament editing tools (unrealEd etc.) or will editing support not be included

2) who does the voice for sam fisher?, i hope its mr husky from the 'fifth right' trailer

3) will the story be heavy on talking and story or will it be more action with the only talking being mission objectives related?

I've never been given the option to pick up & throw anything other than cans & bottles so far, but I have a feeling that in different parts of the game you'll have different objects to interact with. Especially flower vases & stuff. Keep in mind, though, that throwing a book might not make as much noise as an aluminum can, so you wouldn't get the desired effect.

-
- 2) Do guards move slow and sweep the area looking
- for you after they have seen you? Or if they cant
- find you do they just act like nothing happened? (
- Or like in MGS2 do they stay on alert for a few
- mintues, then slowing become unaware)

If they've seen you, they come in with guns charging. It's what they do when they CAN'T see you that's much more exciting. I walked into a hallway (the jail) and shot out the first 2 lights. The guard came running out to investigate so I held tight. After a while he gave up & walked back to his desk. Then I shot another light. He came running back in with his gun drawn & started to proceed cautiously in my general direction, even though I was completely covered in darkness. Then I shot yet another light, and he opened fire at my general position, just hoping to hit me. Sweet. In another instance, I snuck into a room behind someone & hit behind a shelving unit, keeping the unit between him & me at all times as I slowly moved back & forth to get a bead on his timing. He turned around unexpectedly so I had to hurry up scamper around to the other side of the unit again. Even though I was crouched, I still made enough noise to tip him off. He made a startled sound, and walked towards where he heard the sound originate. As he walked past one side of the unit, I crept past the opposite side, so when he got to where I was he didn't see anything & kept walking into the adjoining room to keep investigating. I waited, and waited, and finally I heard him say, "Well I guess it was nothing", and then walked back to where he was before. At this point I came out of my hiding spot to sneak up behind him, but he turned before I got there. He screamed and tried to run away, but I caught up to him before he got to the alarm panel & grabbed him. There! Does that answer your questions? :-)

Hey Mr. Ferland

I would like to ask if you can interogate each and every person in the game or is it just a select few?

Also I would like to ask about what kind of out door locations we can expect Sam to go into?

Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.

The game looks great!! I've already preordered it and can't wait. I have a question though. I have read that there will be downloadable content on XBOX live. I have no chance of getting broadband any time soon (like many others probably). I would like to know if any downloadable content will be made available on disk for non-XBOX live users (similar to what was done with DOA3). Thanks in advance, and keep supporting the 'BOX!

"High priest of holocaust, fire from the sea

Question:

Will the rain effects bounce off the people? (i.e. MGS2)
Also, will you be able to pick up other guns besides your gun? I heard @ E3 that they were doing that, but they decided not to include it afterwards. Also, will you be able to shoot through certain objects such as wood (walls)? Will the story be innovating enough to keep the gamer interested, or will it make it "Force" the gamer to play the game to see the next sequence (a la Mafia). In other words, will the pacing be slow or fast in the game? Will the objects in the environment be completely interactive? or is it like maxpayne, where you can't move them but just blow them up?

Hi Mathieu,

I am currently enjoying a lot the Splinter cell demo I got at Eb while pre-ordering the game.

Here are a few question:

Is the demo we got represent the final verison of the game or an early beta built?

Is St-Hubert's restaurant the favorite place for the splinter cell team to get a good lunch during or after work ? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

When you say that SC is exclusif for 2002, does this mean that only the xbox will have splinter cell in 2002 and the PC after or that both PC and xbox version will appear in 2002 and maybe the game will be ported to other console (I just can'T see how you could do justice to this incredible game on lesser hardware, like the PS2.

Oh and a small note for you Mathieu:

Si je passe en fin de soirée aux bureaux d'ubisoft Montreal apr¨s le travail, combien sont mes chances qu'on me laisse entrer pour te voir et ainsi en voir d'avantage de splinter cell ? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Oh yes, I would like to ask if you can assign items to the D-pad. Like if you wish to quickly pull out your gun you can do so by pressing up on the D-pad. I know that the thermal and NV goggles are positioned on the right and eft buttons of the D-pad.

Also, if you wished to pull out a gadget quickly, would you be able to program that to the D-pad, so that by pressing it in a NE, NW, SE, SW dirction you would bring out the gadgets.

splintereddeath's idea for quick-select of gadgets is a good one, one that I'd like to see in the final game. Although, I think it should only be UP and DOWN that you can customise, having NE, SW, etc. might lead to you accidentally pressing in the wrong direction.

What I mean are the most important stuff like pistol and machine gun would be the easily accesible directions, meaning up and down, where as the other gadgets or weapons that would be used as much would be in the other directions.

Hello Splintereddeath.

To answer you question regarding the quick selection...

The night and thermal vison are mapped on the D-pad because players need to switch their vison quite often. It needed to be available at any time.

But let me tell you another trick :
if you quickly press the black button, you'll see your selection switch to the previous gadget or weapon selected. So if you like to quickly switch between a frag grenade and your pistol (for example), use it. It's very efficient and it works with all your inventory.

Try this out !

Mathieu

Hello again Splintereddeath,

Regarding forced cooperation, every NPC can be grabed from behind. Sam can either force them in a dark zone to knock them down or use them as a body shield pulling out his pistol.
As soon as a character is grabed, check the "interaction icone" on the top right corner of the screen. If it proposes the option for interogation, it means that the character knows something you might want to know too...

There are not many full outdoor locations. You need to go outside quite often to access a roof for example, but you'll spend most of your time in close quarter areas.
Only the Caspian oil refinery level is completely outdoor.

Hi Mathieu,

I've always been wondering after playing the demo how rigid is the AI in SC? In the demo, the AI felt rather scripted. eg. the first guard you come across only began moving once you opened the door. Are the majority of guards inactive until you pass a certain point, or are they active from the start of the level.

Also, is there any random placement of enemies (or anything for that matter), or will they be in exactly the same location each time you play?

Thanks

Hello there. I'm actualy interested in finding out about the story in this game, especialy the backround story leading up to it. In particular, Id like to know a little bit about Sam Fisher. On the official site I saw that you had character profiles for all of the main characters in the game with the exception of Sam himself. What is Sam's backround (ie: where has he worked before and for whom)? What is his date of birth? Im interested in this because to me the story is almost as important as the actual gameplay. Also I would love to know how to get my hands on a copy of this demo I keep hearing about. Thanks for listning.

I think that they want to keep Sam a mystery so we can really experience his personality as we play. Also we will learn alot about Sams past most likely as we play.

Mathieu,

I have more a request than a question. I was hoping you could come over and do an introduction, question and answer over on the ign.com boards, expecially the Xbox General Board. Many, many people there are excited about the game & upcoming release and I think it would be great if you could come on over for a day or two to dicuss the game with people there. I think if you speak with someone over at IGN they will give you an account with VIP status (not that it matters but it is easily recognized). It would also help clear some questions people have about the AI and in game abilities.

Thanks.

How much interactivity do you have with the enviroment. Are you able to pick up a book and throw it? Also, do indiviual items have different properties such as ice melting, etc?

Another thing I would like to ask, is if a guard is lying on the ground will his head go through the wall, or will he actually slump against the wall?

Finally, how will the camera work when you are not able to control it?

Hello HipBreaker,

It's very hard to create a game without being inspired by other good games on the market. Each game as its strengths and weakness... when creating a new title, it occurs quite often to adapt and/or improve a good feature from another title into our game concept.

We really like the tension of the Thief series. This is something we also wanted to have in Splinter Cell. Also, Thief as inspired us a lot for the development of the visibility gage that tells the player if he's visible or not.

There are no control settings in the demo. Only a sound and video menu. I'm sure that when the full games arrives there will be a control menu with different controller options and the option to invert.

Sorry guys but the final version will most likely not comport any way of inverting the controls. When The Source saw the game 2 weeks ago in Mtl., the lead Splinter Cell beta tester was asked specifically if the controls could be inverted and he said no. It was then suggested to him to talk to those responsible for the control schemes to include that feature in the options, and he responded that he would forward the idea to the proper people. Also, game content demo is slightly different form the one you'll experiment in the final game.

I'm loving what i've heard/seen to this point about SC, but have a few concerns.
1) what is the replay value(w/o the downloadable content b/c at this point it is not guaranteed)?
2) will there be difficulty settings(novice, heroic, legendary)?
3) any word on the cut scenes(size, value to storyline)
4) this "interaction icon"--more info needed on it, will it make the game "easier"-b/c it gives to much away--whereas you may have actually killed that person if not for it(this would add more play time), b/c it could alter completion of a lvl.

Hi

I recently acquired the demo from Place Vertu...apparently the last one. In any case I have some concerns, mostly about the graphics with the game thus far..

The lighting is impressive..but the overall polish of the graphics seems to have been sacraficed - concerning the amount of 'jaggies' and the lack of anti-aliasing. Also, other people, myself included have noticed tearing and clipping which occurs in the demo as well as the problem when Sam climbs stairs...he seems as if he is gliding down or up the stairs...not actually climbing...

Another problem I have noticed is with the Sam in the dark...there seems to be black artifacting from the reflection of the green lights on his back...

Will these problems be addressed? I certainly hope so...

XyZspineZyX

I was wondering how the clipping was in the game. Like if a guy gets shot near a wall will he slouch on the wall or will he just lay down and never touch the wall. I have a seen a video where Sam layes a guy down and half of his body is out a window and his bodie just lays straight.

XyZspineZyX
10-23-2002, 07:40 PM
I deeply enjoyed the demo, but have one slight problem. I believe that there should be an option to invert the controls while Sam has his weapon out. This freedom to choose would make the game much easier and less frustrating to aim (at least for myself).

Otherwise, I look forward to the realease. You do have a winner.

Thanks

You know you WAAAAAAAAANT it!

Today I went up to my EB here in Texas and preordered Splinter Cell. No demo, but that's alright, Ill pick up the next issue of OXM if I have to.

Now, my question is, when is the actual date (mm/dd/yy) that you plan to ship the XBox version? If you could nail it down to a day I would be mighty gratified- seeing 'November' and 'Q4 2002' is not cutting it any more.

I noticed in a screenshot sam could put a NPC's head on the wall with a gun pointing at there head, can u do this with all interogations or is just for the times when NPC's don't co-operate as well as u would like. Dear Devs, if you fully taking advantage of the Xbox, PLEASE do this. Since the Xbox has a hard drive, please allow us to make demos. Im sure you can pull off some sweet stuff in this game, and then re watch it with friends, or something. I think that may be a neat little feature.

Hi,

Splinter Cell has 2 difficulty settings : normal and hard.

No needs for more...
An easier mode would have killed the tension of the game ; an harder mode would have been insane...

Guys, you all need to understand that the countdown for Splinter Cell's release has already begun, and nobody is more aware of this than the DEV team. Being the producer to one of the most anticipated game of the year requires a lot of work. I know Mathieu would really like to be available 24/7 in these forums to anwser all the questions, but it's really difficult. Trust me guys, whenever Mathieu gets a few spare minutes in his already very, very, very busy schedule, the first thing he does is to access these forums to anwser your questions.

Well, sure he is avoiding the PC Demo question!? Can't you tell?

He cherry-picks the easy-to-answer-make-the-game-look-good-questions like "Will the game feature XY?"
"Yes, of course the game will have the XY feature, wow isn't that great *smirk* ?!?!?"

When the release date is delayed, no word on the site, no word on the forums. When someone asks "WTF, the release was delayed!??!!?" his answer is "um well, yeah, but only the PC version... BUT the other versions will ALL be on time, wow, isn't that great!!??! *smirk*"

MUTHA-FRIGGIN' DUH!!!!

You would really expect to get some more information. I mean people are going completely nuts about that game. People can't even write proper sentences, just dribbling like fanboys going "I WANT THE DEMOOOOOOOOO!" (Well thanks for the interesting contribution to the discussion). However, when people are so emotionally aroused about that game, they should be treated a bit more carefully.

C'mon devs, give us the bad news as well. It's better to get them from you than from somewhere else.
If you don't know, tell us you don't know. It's simple.

But don't play hide and seek, only popping out of the shadows going "dootsie-dootsie-dootsie" when there's some good news to talk about.

Sheesh...

I keep reading on this forum that the PC version was delayed, yet no gamng sites have announced it. Ubi Soft's own website states the PC version release as December 2002 just as it always had since as long as I've been following this game (few months). EB's even has the release as the 10th of December 2002.

So with speculation of all the post regarding the PC version's delay, my question is has the PC version been delayed?

Once again will there be a PC demo before release? If you don't know Mathieu just say so and I'll stop asking, but until I get some kind of reponse I'll keep asking.

If Mathieu doesn't want to answer a question he doesn't have to, he could stop visiting this thread now and it wouldn't make a difference to him. Repeating questions just annoys everyone. Difficulty settings?
The demo is the same as the game??
Invert camera???

whats with the one line asnwerable questions here. tis gettig to the point that speculation or mere bullshizniz that THE_sam_fisher spouts is becoming cannon as anyone what answers a question on this thread is taken as the truth. this thread has produced little worthwile answers and has yet to solve the two very prominant questions about the game which will decide for me whether or not this game is going to be a huge hit or a small time cult classic.

You don't neeed to "decide" ahead of time. Just wait and you will find out. Be patient! If you have forgotten how to be patient, go away. If Monsieur Ferland chooses not to answer your questions, that it how it will be and there should be no more childish wasting of time. If you show respect, he may answer. And I too have a PC and ignore X-Box, and would want a demo if there were one, but I am not a rabid dog frothing at the mouth with impatience like you. From now on, human, I will ignore you. Ok, so basically i havnt looked seriously around on this forum as i have to keep downloading the movies of this fantastic looking game. In other words you guys cant flame me for saying something already said or stupid, as i know the consequence of this, after being a veteran of the rainbow six 3 forum.
Anyway after downloading some movies (on my 56K ugh) the game generally looks amazing. However when with the human shield the enemies still fired at Sam. I dont understand, it would be much more intense to have a bit of a stand off while both Sam and the enemy point thier guns at each other blurting out indecent vocabulary and shouting for the other to put down their weapon. The thing is this other guy killed his mate. Totally unrealistic and not what i would like to think is by Tom Clancy game standards.
So that my thought. Oh yeah on a personel note, games need more laser sights, even though u cant see them in real life, just the dot. That would be amazing. A bit ironic that im saying for something unrealistic to be put in after flaming something already in for being unrealistic but hey. Its all about how cool it is.

PS: Rob the God wrote this post but i thought the same thing about Human shield so i think Devs should look that one.

I'm not quite sure of what you mean, but I'll have a stab... if you mean there was a guy shooting at Sam while he was completely hidden, well, the guards will sometimes get scared and just fire in Sam's general direction, hoping that they hit you. After a while they'll stop and then, cautiously, go and investigate some more.

I was skeptical about the AI when I was watching videos aswell, but once you actually play the game you'll realise that some of the things you once thought were a little stupid actually make alot of sense. Having said that, there's still a few things that need touching up, but that might have to do with the difficulty setting... which brings me to my next question:

Hi again Mathieu, which difficulty setting is the demo on? I assume it's on Normal. Also, I've been told by a Ubisoft rep that the full version level will have more guards and you'll need to make more security bypasses, so it's good that when I play the full version it'll be somewhat new to me. Thanks in advance.

SithiR, this is not about self-control. This is not about patience.

I have the outmost respect for the developer's work, I can perfectly understand if someone tells me: "Look, we're late on our schedule, we won't get this done before January". or "We are sorry but our lead programmer got sick so we must delay the release" or even "The marketing guys decided that january is a better date for launch".

I certainly have much to do with my time, if the game comes out later, my world won't fall to pieces, believe me.

What is going on my nerves is the selective presentation of facts. Good news are gladly communicated, bad news are being kept quiet about.

I wouldn't even care if the devs would say: Look, it's done when it's done, there won't be an official website, there won't be any forums and certainly you won't get any official comments from us devs." Fine. I can live with that.

But once people decide to open forums, to create a "PRODUCERS CORNER" and encourage people to ask questions, they have to deal with it and go all the way.

And in case you didn't know: they don't do this because they want to be nice to us, it is a means of marketing: increase anticipation and increase sales. So actually this is part of their job, not just a favour they do to us.

Take a look at starwarsgalaxies.com, there you can see working communication between devs and community. All questions are being answered, also the inconvenient ones.

Let me say again: I have no problem if the devs say: "Look, you want us to finish the game, so we can't afford the time to hang out in the forums". But if people only answer the nice questions and avoid the inconvenient ones, I get the feeling, they are takin' us for a ride.

Hey guys,

I'm doing my best to answer your questions when I can.
Please try to keep this section for questions... not for your settling of scores.
Regarding the question bellow, it's hard to tell what is the difficulty setting in the demo since few parameters have changed between this demo and the final game. However, it is close to what the "normal"difficulty level is in the final game.

Normal and hard difficulty settings will have the same amount of guards. However, if you're familiar with the demo or with the "normal" difficulty level, try the "hard" one... trust me, you don't want more guards...

Mathieu

Hi,
Many questions have been asked about Splinter Cell PC and here are few answers.

I will not enter PC and Xbox debate to figure out which one is the best as it is a false debate. They both have strength & weakness and none of these plateform is objectively better than the other for games.

Answers:

Will there be a demo for PC ? We want to make a demo, but we don't know when it's going to be ready.
Will the graphic quality be better on PC than on Xbox ? It will be quite the same between Xbox and high end PC since we operate the same features.

Thanks for the demo answer Tim.

My question is how will saving work in the game? Will there be certain spots you can save with tokens/items (ala The Thing & taperecorders) or will you be able to save at anytime by either hitting a quicksave button or going to the main menu and selecting the save option (ala Half-Life), or will it save only after the mission is complete?
Or probably something completely different...

XyZspineZyX
10-29-2002, 02:27 AM
sounds neat..

but more about the NPC's. if you kill them near a door or wall, would their body be slumped against the wall or half-way in and half-way out?

what kind of music is there in the game?

i've seen many videos where the player will switch to night-vision goggles or heat-vision, and these seem very useful. but after a few seconds, they switch back to normal, even if they're in a dark area. is there a certain period of time you're allowed to use the goggles, or is that just player choice? can you go through the whole game without switching back to normal?

Thanks for the answers Mathieu. Glad to know that you guys aren't leaving us PC gamers in the dust, good to know that you guys probably will make a PC demo, doesnt really matter when aslong as its before release. Also glad to know that their will be no graphical difference between PC and Xbox (providing the user has a high end PC).

I have one final question, Ubi mentioned that there will be downloadable content via Xbox Live. Will us PC gamers also get to download the extra content via patches and the like from your website?

Hello TE-Arcon,

Splinter Cell is using unreal technology, but the engine & tools have been highly modified. The lighting and interaction system in Splinter Cell is quite complexe and is not compatible with UT2003 tools.
Splinter Cell tools are not planned to be released yet.

Hope this answers your question.

Unfortunately, there is not much to say about Splinter Cell PS2. Our priority is on Xbox and PC first.

We'll have more details in January 2003.

Sorry if this has already been asked... couldn't find anything on it. But what exactly are the xbox controls? i'm betting that most folk, like me, came to the xbox from the DC and N64, where we had look on the left stick, and move strafe on the right. i do hope that for once a developer is not going down the default PS2 style route of look on right, move on left, and no we're not gonna give you any option to change that. FRD have it right with TS2, just as bungie did with Halo, allowing you to FULLY remap the keys and axis so that you can feel comfortable with the controls.

So in addition to can we fully remap the controls (how difficult can it be to implement that, it should be in every game)...

What does it control like? Is it more like SMS where you walk around mario style with the left stick, and can move the camera to any angle with the right stick?

Does it work like MGS in that when you aim a gun, camera moves over the shoulder? If so, how do you aim... please not with the right stick... for those of us brought up on N64 and DC games, aiming with the right stick is near impossible...

control schemes i would like to see... either a FPS style with look on the LEFT and move on the RIGHT.

or an MGS2 style control. if your putting AIM on a stick, at least give us an option of having AIM on LEFT stick. I've been looking fwd to this game more than any other game on any system, but I cannot play it or buy it if you insist on forcing us to control defaults that are a handicap after many many years of gaming.

please explain all the control options. put my mind to rest.

ok a few things about this amazing game that I have a few issues with.....

1) Why dont the characters mouths move when they speak?

2) when you throw a bottle at a guard why dosent it shatter?

3) Are the minor clipping problems from the demo fixed?

4) Is the AI the same as it is in the demo for the final game?

SplinterTim - You're the same guy that said a PS2 version was in the works. Then you retracted that statement in an interview with Xbox.com. You stated, and I quote, "Is this game Xbox Exclusive?" "Yes, it is." End Quote.

I'd just like some confirmation on that. It's a yes or no question. Either there is a PS2 version in the works or there isn't!

Why can't you guys simply state that you are considering it / Microsoft is making you wait / you're holding out for more money? There's GOT to be a reason.

Hi sython,

Here are answers to your questions:

1) Lip synchronization was not ready for the demo. It is in the final game so you'll see characters lips move.

2) Bottles will shatter when they hit the ground, a wall or an object, but not on the characters. Realistically, a bottle that would break on the head of a character would make less damages than a bottle that doesn't break. There's a loss of power. As the goal is to knock down enemies, it just make sense it doesn't break.

3) Yes, most of them.

4) The AI in the final game has been tweaked and debugged.

Hey. Just got the demo yesterday from OXM. First off, fantastic job. Realism doesn't even begin to describe it. I am not experienced in stealth games, and this one really got me thinking in a different way.

I do have a couple questions though about the final release.

1) Will the split jump action be tweaked any more than in the demo? Because on the demo it is really quite awkward and not consistent enough to be extremely reliable. I've got the timing down but sometimes he just doesn't do it.

2) Any chance of making the moving of NPC's room to room easier? Putting them down to open a door is REALLY cumbersome and annoying. Especially when they're right by a door, and you pick them up on accident when you really wanted to open the door, so you set them back down, then open the door, then pick them up, set them down, close the door....blah..sorry.

3) Why can you not take NPC's guns from them to make sure they don't return to shoot you on your way out? Do they never wake up after knocking them out?

4) Why does shooting a camera not set off an alarm? Is there a camera "hack" type tool like the lockpick?

5) The NPC awareness should be tweaked when your right behind them. Too often in the demo I sneak up behind someone and they turn around even when I'm barely moving because I entered their "zone". Then they make a sound before I knock deabilitate them.

Again, great job! I was way more into it then I thought I'd be.

Hi Mrkofdabeast,

When creating a new game profile, you'll have 3 slot available to save any checkpoint in the game. So if there is an area you'd like to play again, you can come back at anytime and load this checkpoint again.
Moreover, once you start a new mission, it will remain unlock so you can play it again whenever you want.

Levels are quite big. The demo is not a reference as it is the smallest level of the whole game. Loading times are about the same lenght as other Xbox games.

Hope this answer your questions.

When he says Xbox exclusive, it only applies to other consoles for 2002. Since PC isn't considered a "console", it's not included in the Xbox console exclusivity for 2002. Which means there will be a PC version before the end of the year.

Hey Mathieu thanks for answering my other questions about the game. I have some more if you don't mind. I know your'e busy and all that so if you don't have time i'll understand. But anyways, down to the questions.

1. Will this game keep us excited for a long time? A lot of people liked and still like halo but i was never a big fan. I guess what i'm really asking is this...each time you start a level, will the enemies be in different spots so we never know what's around the next corner?

2. And yea i'm curious about a previous question that was asked. When players fall or die, Will their bodys act as if it was against a wall like on metal gear solid 2? For example..If you move a body and set it down with it's upper body against the wall, Will it's upper body act as if it was against it? Or will his body be half way out of the level and half way in...I know i didn't do a good jab asking that but i try. Don't worry about it if you don't understand.

3. Sorry i'm taking up all of your time mathieu. This is my last question. On some games, when an alarm is sounded, The enemies know exatcly where you are wherever you go. Will splinter cell be like this? Or will the enemy search for you?

Thanks so much mathieu wether you can answer my questions or not.

Okay people, listen up. Here are some answers to a bunch of the questions that keep getting asked over and over again. The producers do a great job of coming in here to answer questions when they're not busy as hell finishing the game, but there's no reason for them to keep answering the same questions, so I'll do it for them.

genesiswithin:

They are working on the clipping issues.

The music is a sort of stealth-military theme. No rock or rap or anything. :-)

There is no time limit to using the goggles. Yes, you can play the entire game using thermal vision if you want to. People often switch back to normal vision because it's always helpful to see what the surroundings actually look like. Even with nightvision it's easy to accidentally walk into a well lit area and be spotted, even more so with thermal vision, so it's just a way to keep tabs on your environment.

zer0l1ght:

The left thumbstick controls the movement (forward/back, turn left/right) and the right stick controls the camera (full 360-degree pivot around the player). There is no strafe. Yes, it's like SMS, I guess. Yes, when you aim your gun, the camera moves over Sam's right shoulder. Yes, you aim with the right thumbstick and no, it's not impossible to get used to. Hell, I even got used to a non-inverted camera scheme after a while. BUT, I'm almost certain that there will be an option to remap the controls. I can't say for sure, but I think you can.

EricTheEZ1 : you said, "SplinterTim - You're the same guy that said a PS2 version was in the works. Then you retracted that statement in an interview with Xbox.com. You stated, and I quote, "Is this game Xbox Exclusive?" "Yes, it is." End Quote.

I'd just like some confirmation on that. It's a yes or no question. Either there is a PS2 version in the works or there isn't!"

No, it's not a yes or no question. The two things are mutually explicit. There IS a PS2 version in the works. It will be out much later than the Xbox version. Why? Because Splinter Cell is an Xbox exclusive. That means that for now, no other platform other than the PC will get it. It's coming....the "exclusive" part doesn't mean "forever".

"Is there a camera "hack" type tool like the lockpick?"

Yes, there is. It's called a camera jammer.

"On some games, when an alarm is sounded, The enemies know exatcly where you are wherever you go. Will splinter cell be like this? Or will the enemy search for you?"

Splinter Cell is nothing like this. Yes, the enemy will search for you, and if you hide yourself well enough, they will NEVER be able to find you. That's the whole idea. Here's an example:
You shoot out the lights in a stairwell, and alert the guards in the room at the top of the stairs. They come out to investigate while you run down the darkened staris, do a split jump between them, and hang there. They come running around the corner and declare, "He vanished!"

How's that?

Hope this helps, everyone.

Im using a P3 800MHz. 128 mb geforce 3 TI. 512 sdram. Is it enough to run SC or would it be really laggy??

Hey, no problem. It's easy to miss stuff. These forums are just flying by now.

Hey PC gamers! Here's a direct quote from M.F. regarding PC system requirements. Even though this comes straight from the mouth of a Dev, keep in mind it's still subject to change at any point. But if you absolutely have to know, then here you go:

"It should run on PC equipped with PIII 800 MHz, GeForce 2, Radeon & GeForce 4MX, 256 MB of RAM"

Oh, he also says there absolutely will be a PC demo at some point. There. Everyone happy now?

While reading this interview, something came to mind about the whole PC vs. Xbox thing. I'm gonna go find a more suitable thread to put it in. (and put on my asbestos underwear)

Edit: Meh, nevermind. I'll be in http://s1.cgi.gamefaqs.com/boards/gentopic.asp?board=30535 if you need me. I think I'll end up with fewer threats on my life if I post it there. :-)

5) The NPC awareness should be tweaked when your right behind them. Too often in the demo I sneak up behind someone and they turn around even when I'm barely moving because I entered their "zone". Then they make a
"what's that?!" sound right before I deabilitate them.

WHEN WIll IT COME OUT FOR GAMECUBE????

XyZspineZyX

Hey, Splintertim,I have played the demo from the OXM and I have a couple of question for you that I hope you can answer..

1) I noticed in the demo that when you move real fast with the camera or character that the whole screen seems to stutter or flicker, which really takes you out of the game. I have played two demos and watched movies at IGN and they all do this. This is called Vertical sync I think, will this be fixexd for the final version?

2) Will the physics system for dead bodies and when the character walks down stairs be better then the demo? Dead bodies going through walls and the character floating on the stairs, not good.

3) Whats up with all the jaggies? Will they be there in the final version?

Other then that this game is unreal. Best game on the xbox so far for me.

Thanks for your time.

Hey, Splintertim. A question:

Recently, things have been going around, especially on EBGAMES.com and GAMESTOP.com that Splinter Cell PC is to be released next year. Is this true? I know you said a few days ago it is PC and Xbox this year, but maybe things changed?

Hello Splinter Cell Producers.

I hope you make this game a Xbox exclusive. Bringing it to the PC is ok because of Nvidia technology. Spending all that time to port means less time in making Splinter Cell II. I can say for sure that sales for this game on the Xbox will be just as big as Halo. PS2 allready has alot more games then the Xbox so they would'nt miss it. They allready have a large number of franchises on the PS2 that are exclusive. I would also like to thank UBI Soft for Deathrow. That friggen game rocks! If this game sells over 1 million units on the Xbox then Im sure Microsoft will offer something to sweeten the deal for exclusivity. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I was curious, not too long ago I stopped by the local video gaming store, I won't mention the name, and talked to the manager there about SC. He mentioned something about SC being available for PS2 and GC sometime next year(2003)...maybe Marchishh...any truth to this?

not yet, dude. Can I just call you Mathew, Tim? Anyway, My question is,

In the final version, can the aim be inverted?

XyZspineZyX
11-02-2002, 09:41 AM
i know the camera is inverted, I dont know if that includes aim. One more question is, will the graphics and stuff be tweaked for the final build? It looks awsome, but I notice that when he runs through the curtain, he sometimes just goes through it. That isnt a really big problem, but there is this really grainy look to the graphics. Like when PC games have an intro movie and they use bink technology, it shows this pixilated type look. You can see it, subtly in dvd movies. Was that for demo purposes, or will it look like that in the final build?

SplinterTim,
Have certain little bugs such as the bulletproof plants and curtains in the demo been fixed? For a game to tout such realism in other areas and have these bugs wouldn't be good.

Thanks,
Clinton

Will you be able to search bodies for items. I heard that this feature was taken out because you didn't want to taunt the players. I feel that it would be a very good feature though.

Also are the controls configurable on the xbox version?

Hi Mathieu. I've been hearing so many different release dates for splinter cell on XBOX. I reserved a copy and it'd be nice to know when to pick it up. I've heard from web sites and other people that it's coming out on "Nov 10th, Nov 18th, Nov 27th, and even December 1st". Mathieu can you clear this up for me. What is the date that we'll all be able to go get splinter cell and play it until our eyes bleed?

Thanks Matheiu

November 18th is the confirmed date for basically EVERY major retail store. I already pre-ordered it.

finally got a copy of the demo in the Uk this weekend. very nice. very impressive. controls are spot on until you switch into aim mode. then its look(aim) on the right, and move strafe on the left... which is totally alien to me. years of playing console games (since the megadrive) has left me with a very accurate left thumb (from dpads and analogue sticks) and a less accurate right thumb. when playing sports games, i use my left thumb to move and turn, when playing platformers i use my left thumb to move and turn, when playing racing games i use my left thumb to steer, and when playing FPS's like Halo and TS2, I use my left thumb to look and aim... there's a pattern there. Putting look and aim on the right stick is something that stopped me and any of my colleagues from buying Max Payne. It's something that stops us buying ANY game. There should be an option in Splinter Cell which allows the controls to remain as is in normal move around mode, and then allows you to configure the "FPS" controls used in aim mode such that if its ur preference, you can have the left for look and the right for move... and an invert look. without this control setup, I fear that a large proportion of the customer base will not buy Splinter Cell. You can't un-learn years of gaming. I've tried.

No you're not. If you want it to be exclusive then that's fine, but please please don't bullsh*t us GC and PS/2 owners like that and then expect us to still buy it like obedient second-class bottom-feeders. Are you trying to make me avoid every last thing your company makes?

Q Has splinter cell gone gold?

XyZspineZyX
11-04-2002, 05:15 PM
EXACTLY the same with me. I always use my Left thumb to guide it back and forth and moving forward and backward and use the Right thumb to strafe and look up and down inverted.

If they don't include that option I'll have a VERY, VERY hard time adjusting.

I seriously doubt that it has gone gold, but it will go gold very soon. Otherwise they won't have enough copies for everybody at launch.

Hello Mrkofdabeast,

Regarding your 3 questions:

1) When infiltrating a zone, enemies are always on patrol in about the same area. However, they will react deferently according to the strategy you've decided to use. If you always use the same strategy perfectly, enemies should behave the same way. If you try other ways to achieve your goal, you'll discover other nice stuff about the AI. Here's the replay value you're looking for.

2) We're using a simple physic for enemies' bodies. It reacts to a wall or any surface, but it may happen that some ends of bodies go through materials. We've studied a lot of avenues for physic, including Karma engine. But it turned out that this kind of system requires a huge amount of calculation and we've finally decided to make a compromise on this. I think it is a good decision since it allows extra CPU to calulate more important features.

3) When an alarm is sounded, enemies will investigate. If you're in a save dark zone, they should not see you, unless you're making noise.

Hope this answers your questions.

Mathieu

- I know your'e busy and all that so if you don't have

-
- 1. Will this game keep us excited for a long time? A

-
- 2. And yea i'm curious about a previous question

-
- 3. Sorry i'm taking up all of your time mathieu.
- This is my last question. On some games, when an

- this? Or will the enemy search for you?
-
- Thanks so much mathieu wether you can answer my
