View Full Version : Blizzard of patches

I am confused by the FB patches, since what I want is the one (hopefully) that fixes the AI's idiocy. I gave up playing my original FB, since it regularly took two out of the three wingmen in my unit and slammed them together during the prep for a mission, while circling our own airfield. Not only that, it made my own wingman a liability, since he threatened to do the same on every turn. Has this been fixed? If so, what patch is it, or will 1.22 fix it as well as everything else it does?

Tough. Keep up or be left behind.

It could be worse. Before the Internet was so popular, you'd have to order a disk or CD from the distributor and wait for it to arrive before upgrading.

Yes, it involves a little "keeping current", but that's life.

Patching is just a fact of software life.

And, by the way, *no* patch yet has made the AI more "intelligent".

Thanks for the sneer, but I was looking for some help, not some snot-nosed forum lout. If there is, in fact, no patch which prevents the inevitability of two or more planes colliding in FB on a regular basis, just say so and do without the attitude.
Otherwise naff off and let those who really want to help me out do just that

I've never had the continuous collisions you state, although they have and still can occur even with 1.22. All of my play is offline and I haven't seen one in quite some time.

I keep it relative and compare it to other CFS sims on the market, FB is as good as there is. There is a tremendous amount of improvement to be gained but AI is not as easy as it may appear. It will take many, many years.

Presumably the addon AI will be more 'intellegent'.

Stop whining and read the description that goes with every patch on the site.

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge,
ye shall be judged: and with what
measure ye mete, it shall be measured
to you again.

While this may not answer your specific question, I trust you know about increasing AI skill level by editing config.ini for campaigns, right?

I've never had any problem with massive amounts of colissions. A couple of times yeah I've seen some stupid things but then it happens.

Anyone who has seen the F-15 collision video that was floating around the LOMAC forums last week will accept random accidents.

Actually, it wasn't a "sneer", but just a dose of reality.

When I "sneer", you'll know it.

Have a wonderful, magical day. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Thanks to all who offered some constructive help –â I didn't know about the config.ini for a start and if Tactical wants to elaborate on that I will be happy to listen. I should, perhaps, have pointed out that this only happens in the FB Barbarossa campaign set. I get a lot of collisions between wingmen, especially at the start of missions, or on any where a lot of in-flight wheeling takes place ( bomber escort, for example). It got to the stage where I was almost guaranteed to lose two out of a four flight before I even met the enemy. I initially put it down to duff mission design and gave up playing that, but I couldnâ't see why AI pilots in Barbarossa should be much worse than elsewhere thanks to design screw-ups.

An easier way to stop the wingmen colliding, is tell them on the radio to widen the formation.

Funny, last time I did that, they still ran into me. I'm not kidding. I widened the formation, did a few formation changes, and then, the forward-backward mini-warping started and before you know it (boom).

That's exactly what I mean, Stigir. No matter what you do, it seems they end up slamming into each other, which is what makes me thing it is an AI problem. But why on Barbarossa and not on the 'normal' FB or IL2? Surely its the same AI?

I have just been sent a copy of Battle Over Europe by those nice people at Just Flight (I am a reviewer). Anyone experienced this yet, got any comments? I am off to test it out, but I probably get mine the same time as pre-orders, so I am looking for feedback.

It is almost certainly a waypoint issue Blow. Operation Barbarossa is fairly 'old', and the AI has changed since its creation. Unfortunately, it appears to have effected some people's campaigns.

Though I haven't done enough testing to unequivacably say, I believe the 'Widen Formation' command does not help (it doesn't help me at least). I actually 'Tighten Formation', but the real trick, imho, to avoiding collisions: Fly as leader of your group, and fly GENTLY. Formation flying is dificult at best, so make it as easy as possible on you wingmen by flying slow gentle banking turns, slow and easy decents, a wider pattern while landing, and generally 'babying' your wingmen as much as possible.

Works aces for me, I've only had 2 collisions (1 online, as I was descending for a crash land, and unable to control flight, I should have given the 'return to base order', but didn't) in about the last 150 missions.

I had the sme problem on 'Barbarossa'. I don't think there is a fix for it. Like the gentleman before me stated it is most likely a waypoint issue. I remember one mission watching the other 3 planes in my flight fly straight into a hill! Might try downloading the "PikAs' or "Experten" campaigns. I've had no problems with them.
