View Full Version : My B-17 Flight Today

Had the opportunity to go up in the Collings Foundation B-17 "Nine O Nine" today. Their B-17, B-24("the only restored flying B-24 in the world today"), and B-25 visited Groton-New London airport and I paid the hefty fee to go up in the 17. It was worth every cent to hear, and feel the throttle open on those massive radials and then bump down the runway and take to the air!
For photos of my flight, see my thread at SimHq.com:

I did the B24 a few years ago, Paid extra and sat in the co-pilots seat well worth it.

I attempted to fly on their B-24 a few times (the #4 engine had issues)---a friend was in the left seat, he's a flight simmer, too.

The next ship to come to ABQ was Aluminum Overcast and I took a hop in her, instead. Sweet. I'm game for any warbird ride that comes to town now, best $400 I ever spent (tried to do a ride in a P-51 in Phoenix, but it was in the shop the only day I was able to be in Mesa).

It's a blast, huh? I have a very similar pic in the bombadier's position only mine shows desert out the window. <G>

Funny, my brother was strapped into the B-24 several years ago and they got to the end of the runway, gunned the engines a bit, then had to return to the flight line and cancel the flight. Boy, was he disappointed!

And I agree, possibly the best $400 I've ever spent.

I paid for a ride in "Nine-O-Nine" several years ago and I still remember it! It was a great flight and if I had the money, I'd do it again.

Last year I won a ride in the B-25J "Panchito", another great flight and very noisy, lost more of my hearing on that one, but would do it again in half of a heartbeat!

I will be going up in one of them next week.
Hopefully it will be the B-24 this time.
I went up in 909 out of Nashua NH last year.

$425 is chump change and it's well worth it!
It cost $4000 per hour to run those birds.
Cheap money to fly on the last of the type.

Very nice pics, thanks for sharing. I too am green with envy, particularly after watching Sally B and Pink Lady at Flying Legends earlier this year.

I decided to spice up my photos a bit using Il-2 to provide some enemy. My Paint Shop Pro skills aren't the best, but some of these shots came out fairly well, IMHO. Let me know if you enjoy them!
