On thursday 2 people (bomb experts) died while trying to disarm a WW2 bomb of 250 kg weight in the city of Salzburg (Austria). A third guy came to hospital with heavy injuries in the face. Parts of the bomb flew up to 500meters. Another policeman got light injuries. He was telephoning when the shockwave reached him. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

It happened in Schallmoos a Part of Salzburg City
. It is a mixture of industrial estate and residential area. This area is heavily cropped (?I hope thats the right word) since the 60ies. It' estimated that at least a second bomb is still on the erea.

i think that may depend on type of bomb

i suppose with ww2 - you got to dig it up, clean it off and get into the thing (that'll be all rusted over) before you even get down to the defusal and i guess people have gotta do all that

I think robots only disarm small bombs (they blow them up.) A large bomb(like that one) would have destroyed the robot and could have damaged nearby buildings. The best way to disarm a bomb like that is to do it manually (wires and all.) Very sad/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif . They were professionals who died for the safety of others. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

To avoid the frustration of misfortune,
That, in this world, is happiness.

Damn that sucks! I mean why not just blow the thing up in the middle of the ocean or the desert, so nobody gets hurt? I guess they didn't have the robotic bomb difusser their.

The Police built a concrete ring around the bomb. It was stuck in the mud (head on I think) When they tried to lift the bomb to reach the detonator it exploded. At least the erea was evacuated (exept for the police forces). /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

That's tragic. I'll check my international news when I get home.
