Corsair IV of 1841 Squadron FAA flown by Lt. R. Hampton Gray. HMS
Formidable, August 1945.

A special thanks to Goshikisen for doing the research and write up for this

This skin depicts a Corsair IV flown by Lt. Robert Hampton "Hammy" Gray of
the RCNVR. On August 9th, 1945 Lt. Gray lead a low level attack on the IJN
Escort Destroyer Amakusa anchored in Onagawa Bay in the Japanese Island of Honshu. Despite
heavy anti-aircraft fire from batteries on the shore and several anchored
ships Gray pressed home the attack against the destroyer. Coming in at 50 feet above the water,
and taking numerous AA hits, his first bomb was shot off its rack while the
second Gray released for a direct hit which penetrated the Amakusa's engine room and
detonated. After the attack Gray's Corsair exploded and crashed into Onagawa
Bay. The Amakusa quickly took on water, listed to starboard and sank with the loss of 71 of
her crew. On August 31, 1945 Lt. Gray was posthumously awarded the
Distinguished Service Cross and on November 13 the Victoria Cross. The official VC citation
makes mention of his "brilliant fighting spirit and most inspiring
leadership". Lt. Gray was the only member of the Royal Canadian Navy to receive this honour and
the last recipient of the Victoria Cross during the Second World War.

Interesting sidenote - In August 1944 Gray participated in several raids on
the battleship Tirpitz anchored in Alten Fjord, Norway while flying with 1841 Squadron, HMS Formidable.

Hammster. Thanks so much for doing this skin. We Canadians who have an interest in World War 2 aviation are very proud of Canadian Aviators like Lt. Grey who carried on our strong tradition of indomitable fighting spirt, courage and heroism in the air.
