So, other than the rather ancient MiG Alley title, is there anything of the quality of IL2 out there that simulates the early jet era, circa Korean War?

I think the closest thing to it is something that is being made 3rd party for CFS3.. I think it is free too. Hit this (http://www.netwings.org/news/) link over at Netwings and scroll down half way.

To mark the 54th Anniversary of the North Korean invasion of South Korea - the beginning of the Korean War the Dogpatch Crew has released the Korean Theatre Construction Set for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 3
The Korean Theater Construction Set expands Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 3 in a way never before thought possible. This expansion creates an entirely new game of your already existing copy of CFS3 by adding all of South Korea, most of North Korea as well as parts of both China and Japan. In this world you can fly 20 Korean War era aircraft (with more available to download from this site) and take part in 45 new missions set during the height of the Korean conflict

If Oleg's guys ever make a korea add-on, i know I'd sure buy it. They could also do one nobody else has....carrier ops off Korea. Would require catapults on the CVs, but it would be a real hoot flying Panthers and Skyraiders off the Essex, or Sea Furies and Seafire 47s. Maybe in the future.
