Sorry to seem like a git (that's OZ for idiot LOL) but would like a little help please - can't find answer here on forums and have spent hours reading so pardon if it's been posted before.

Sometimes I see these sonar/radar lines - blue for warships and black for merchants it seems. However they only show up when I get near warships - when the buggers sneak up on me. I get really near a merchant and can't often track it down - close enough to kill it - just miss it (by that much) as I cannot start that tracking thing. All I see is the red square and bypass it. Found a convoy once and killed 7 as they were visible by sight (a fluke of course).

I do play it on easy otherwise would get no where - I'll make it gradually harder when I get used to it. Sunk one this afternoon with the cannon (was fun)and the whole system crashed immediately thereafter - must have been all the explosions http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif . This place has aircon and I have the side of the case open and a desk fan cooling everything so overheating of the video card should not be a problem.

Also where do screenshots end up? - have looked in all the SH5 directories under my F:/UBISOFT where the actual program files are and under MY DOCs/SH5 (which is where most games put them) but still can't find them.

Appreciate any advice please.

Screenshots, taken via Ctrl-F11, are in your main install folder, C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5 by default as BMP files.

The hydrophones (you'll get actual *ping* sonar later, right now you're just passively listening through "sea headphones") have a range around 20-30k or so. The GHG ones you start out with can only hear approx 180 to either side, so you're deaf directly in front and behind your boat.

Most ships are tough to hear from their front, which is why you might not hear some of them. The trick with the hydrophone lines is that the ship is at the end of the line. So when you hear one stop. Mark the end of the line. Wait 10-15 minutes, see where the line is and mark it again. You can than connect the dots and drag the line ahead to get it's course. Just try to intercept along that line. Remember to get ahead of them without getting close enough to spook them, so you can have time to submerge and approach their path to get into position.

You are a real gentleman Eoweth - you are the go to man.

I have been trying to use the prtscr key for screen shots which is why I didn't get any (sob) especially my sinking one. My clan has a monthly competition and I am the only one playing this sim. ( http://www.aef-hq.com.au/aef3/ )

One of the most fun roleplaying, not really competition, but war simulation is Wolves At War (http://wolvesatwar.org/). They are only using Silent Hunter 3 currently, and sadly seem quite against SH5, but I hope they'll change their minds.

Basically you join a flotilla and every 4 weeks real time you're expected to complete a patrol. You write up patrol logs of what happened, and RP stories to go with if you want. Your flotilla chief will assign you to a patrol zone and you keep records of everything you sink. It's fun and a lot of good captain's there.

Hi mate - sorry to bother you - I have been reading all the forums but is there a site which gives a "how to play SH5" walk through in one place?

I have googled all over the place but not found one.

The game is actually running not badly now and I am enjoying it to my limited ability.

Thanks again for all your help,

Denis

What up?( translation;G'day) Denis,

As soon as the players figure it out, they will begin posting how to's here.
We were all left clueless and wallowing in the waves when III was released. Same with IV. Both lacked the needed documentation. Sounds like V is no different I'm afraid. We all learned by trial and error back then.

SubSim.com (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=244) is a pretty good place for that kind of thing. I don't think anyone has written an entirely comprehensive tutorial but you'll find tutorials for map tools, manual targeting with map contacts on, manual targeting with map contacts off, auto-TDC tutorials, hints for missions, answers to various questions and a lot more. Also, unlike here, you'll sometimes find a dev post. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks guys - that was supposed to be a PM to Eoweth - no I was completely sober but I have received my answer. This bloody oldtimers strikes again.

I will have a look at that site.

Actually have completed one mission and got an new Sub. (on easy as I said - hopefully I'll be able to do it all again on a harder setting once I get the hang of it - gives me great value for the game that way http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif )

EDIT: I can see a lot of value in that site and have registered.
