What I would like to see is knowledge on how best to use the plane in this game. It does not matter how it did in the real world.

If the roll rate of the P-47D is off, so be it. The view out of the FW-190? It is what it is. How do you guys deal with it? Knowing that is far more useful than the endless squabbles over a plane's short comings compared to its real life counterpart.

For instance. Do you use cassettes on your IL2-3? A mixture of bombs and rockets? Do you fly fast on the deck. Do you fly low and pop up? Or do you dive on the target?

Any ideas? Can we do this without the angst?

I think you'll have to be more specific here, but heres how I fly my favorites...

109K-4 & G-6 - with the G-6 I always take 20mm gunpods, just for the heck of it. They pack a big punch if you hit a target just right with them, and in case they don't do the trick, the Mk108 usually will. I ALWAYS try to climb to at least 4000m before heading out to hunt for VVS birds. I dive down, then climb back up; usually a shallow climb to maintain E and get the same alt back. If I can't, I climb all the way back up till I'm at that alt again. After which, I reasses and take another pass.

Fw-190 - Default armanent on the earlier antons and doras, mk108 wing cannons with the A8 and A9. Pretty much the same thing as the 109s above, but change approach pass to near directly from the six.

P-47 - Extra ammo, depending on the mission. Since it's a great mud mover, sometimes I'll load out the max it can carry. Great for SEAD before a IL-2 strike. In the fighter role, climb to 4000m and BnZ. Again, same as the above - make as many passes as needed and constantly asses the situation. Ground attack is more of a "seat of the pants" deal, you play it as it comes to you.

IL-2, all 1943 models - 96xPTAB and four BRS-132 rockets. Great for killing those pesky heavy armor convoys. The IL-2 Type 3 with 23mm guns can carry 192 PTAB, which is sometimes better if you have a long convoy target. Generally, the Type 3M is the best for tank killing, even if the 37mm guns aren't effective on the heavier classes of tanks. While flying these, I generally stay low and when attacking the target, use roads to line up the crosshairs in order to get a perfect PTAB run. Requires you to be VERY low to have a successful PTAB drop.

Oh yeah, I'm a P-63 whiner too! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Your best bet to start is by looking at a program called IL2 Compare, which will give you speeds, ROC and turn times for various planes in the game.

Understanding a plane's performance parameters will give you a lot of insight into how that plane can be most effectivley used and at what altitude or under what conditions its strengths can be exploited.

Here's the link to the program:

Thanks guys.

Chad, I got that . it is useful. And you are right, I need to study it more.

Korolov, Yes I guess I should of been more specific/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
But what you wrote is what I am looking for.

For instance. I favor the IL-2 two seaters. I like to go fast and on the deck. I usually carry the cassettes because I like the area coverage. My favorite mission is flak supression. Unless I see planes on the runway /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

By flying on the deck, I can't be attacked from below. And I suppose it inhibits the diving attack. And the rear gunner helps with the SA.

And I am learning the P-47. I think it makes a great SEAD plane. But I hear the roll rate is somewhat off.

Thanks again for the replies gentlemen. It helps.

What a sensible post /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I completely agree with you. Better to talk about the strenghs and weakneses of the planes "as they are" in the game than going over and over elusive comparations with real life.

Anyway...

Modmovers' website is a good place to start:
http://www.mudmovers.com/sturmovik_101/loadouts.htm
In that list of weapons you can click on the names to get a wonderful detailed explanation. Brilliant website.

And about tactics. I also love to go down the deck. I usually load up the bigger bombs the plane can cope with, and set a bomb delay of 1 or 2 seconds. With this you can drop the bombs with incredible accuracy without getting hit by their blast. So addictive /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
Even hunting tanks in a Mosca becomes a pleasure.
