My favorite if there is any depth where I am is to just flank speed spiral down to 100mtrs, release 2 decoys then crash dive again but immediately go to silent with rudder amidship. I have yet to sustain any damage that would take me out of the attack by depthcharging just flak/deckgun damage, of course I'm at a date where I think the hedgehog weapon systems not around yet. I imagine when the yanks n brits get them that maneuver will not work.

Hedgehog should work better against subs close to surface. So if you're at a decent depth, don't fear it.

There have been a number of posts regarding hedgehogs and the pros and cons. Does anyone know if the projectiles went "safe" or inactive beyond a specific depth such as beyond the possible maximum depth any sub could go? Again I refer to something I remember reading that they were more effective in the Pacific because of the generally deeper depths involved, and less false detonations?

It is my understanding, and I am no expert, that shallow bottoms might detonate the hedgehogs. This would make it difficult to know if you hit anything.

In deep water the hedgehogs would only detonate when they hit a sub.

I looked for a depth, I didn't find one. I didn't read in depththough. Check it out here:

The way they are shoot, they form a circle that gets wider as they keep moving. So if you're fair deep, chances to be directly impacted by one of them get dramatically reduced.

How do you know if they are launching hedghogs? will the hydrophone operator say something like "hedgehog attack !" ??

I read off of a Janes site subscription at a friends who in the military that hedghogs detonated when they hit the sea floor if hitting a solid object not just sand or silt.

hedgehogs are very bad, believe me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I've been hedgehoged to death twice. Its a ringlet of smaller charges that surround your sub and then go BOOM! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif
The tricky thing about them is where DC's come off the stern, the hedgehog was thrown forward and off to one side or the other from the escort. I was at p-depth, waiting for the circling escort to go past me when you hear this multiple 'plop'. 2 sec later, toast http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

The first time it happened, I didnt expect an escort to DC me as it was approaching slowly, as opposed to when they up their speed for a DC run, it was very deceiving and rude of that escort! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

The second time, just plain carelessness.

good tips, will peddle hard if approached by a DD that seems reluctant to charge in at 'attack run !' speed , thanks

Has anyone ever tried this?, just had a thought, what if you fired a torpedo at a slow speed as a decoy for the escort to chase while you ran silent in another direction? Anybody know if that can be done?

I think they can tell the difference between a sub and a torpedo. Kind of like how you can tell the difference between a merchant and a warship.

Best not to waist your torpedo.
