They went up 100km+ for the second time in 5 days - winning the US$10 million X-Prize.

My congratulations to all who worked on it - it's a great achievement !

Yup. The BlitzPigs are celebrating the winning of the X Prize. It's personal for us because BlitzPig_Groucho works for Scaled Composites. And he has been gracious to 5 of us BPs when he gave us a tour of the compound some few months back.

He's the one standing at the gate.

A great achievement... the requirement was that they had to do two flights within two weeks for the $10 million prize. The endeavor was, of course, not driven by the monetary reward, but rather the long range commercial prospects. Paul Allen(co-founder of Microsoft) invested $20 million in the project..you don't do that JUST to win $10 million, of course.

Virgin Air owner/CEO Branson has signed a contract for vehicles, to begin flying paying passengers (a short thrill ride up to 100Km and back down) in 2007...I think I read that he expects to charge about $20,000 per passenger/flight. That's not a bad price, considering that it may not be much more than the cost of a good Gaming Computer system necessary to "Fly" Oleg's Battle of Britain. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Congrats to the team they deserve it and congrats to all the other teams who got off their collective asses to even try.

It took too long to get this far, I think.

Nevertheless, it is rather amazing.

I feel happy to know that just a small group of 20 individuals set their minds to reach a goal that many thought was very difficult if not impossible. This drive is very much non-existant in the United States in these times. We have not seen this spirit since the Wright Bros., Edison, Ford, Goddard and Graham Bell had them. Small groups making major contributions to the Human Race. We all need this and stop depending on Government to do these great things for all to enjoy the benefits.
