View Full Version : IS there supposed to be a "Grainyness" to the perfect water when viewed to horizon...???

I've noticed on my new 6800GT that there is a slight grain-i-ness imposed over the perfect water, when viewing the water off to the distance.

It's almost as if the cockpit glass is dirty, but it's there even in external view. Is there a setting I'm missing or is this a normal artifact with FB and the Perfect water setting.

Problem is I never really noticed it before. Couldn't really play much in perfect mode with my old card http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This is a problem with the code IMHO.

It has been there for for a long time. I call it the screen door effect. It looks like you are looking through a screen door! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

I had that with my GF3, too... get a Radeon and you won't see it anymore http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

Just wonder why the GF series STILL has this http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/34.gif

Willey, I've got a Radeon and still see it, I'm pretty sure that "Oo'errr look at my ATI settings" Coastie has one too.

Screendoor is exactly how it looks and its not confined to NV cards.

This happens on any hardware in perfect mode.

It seems like this is the way that the graphics engine simulates movement of the water surface. . . I guess it does lend a sense of motion to it if your eyes are squinting, otherwise it looks sort of like your monitor is dirty :-(

LOMAC looks pretty nice without this. . . you I have to say when your down near the water the depth perception I have in FB is better. . . with the screen door on or off.

Well now, there's some consolation for me after all. Here I was, thinking I was the only sucker suffering from this effect on the water!

Even though my system will just about manage on 'Perfect', I dropped it back to 'Excellent' because the look of the water P***ed me off so much. I didn't see a huge difference in quality anyway, so 'Excellent' for terrain is fine with all the other settings at max. No great loss.

Just for the record:

Intel P4 3.4 GHz 800FSB
Intel D875PBZ motherboard
2 GHz Hynix DDR400 RAM
2 x Western Digital 120 GB SATA HD's in RAID 0
ASUS V9980 FX5950 Ultra 256 MB
Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS
21 inch Mitsubishi DP 2070SB CRT monitor
HOTAS Cougar flight controls with Elite rudder pedals

While I'm at it, any recommendations for a graphics card upgrade? Could I get a worthwhile improvement without spending an arm and a leg? IL2 and FB both run great, but LOMAC is only smooth with the settings around 3/4.

Best regards to all,
panther3485

1. Yes, it is a code issue.

I still don't understand thhe door-thingie, but it looks.... odd anyway.

2. PF will use a different system to show water. This was allready posted here and the screenies show a very different method of water-rendering, too.
The reason is easy: IL2 was designed to show the EasternFront. There are not many oceans between Berlin and Moscow (of course, walking east http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ). So, you can see the rivers don't have the same problem.
PF on the opposite is located in the pacific and there's a LOT of water. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Being a fan of navigations, I still wonder, how long it will take us, to get used to find our ways back home without landmark-navigation http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Well Lone Ranger, if you're a fan of "navigations", you may have heard of 'dead-reckoning' (distance and bearing). This is how the aviators in the Pacific airwar during WWII found their way across the vastness of the ocean. Plus they used altitude, latitude, lonfitude, and sun angle (azimuth). Nothing new, this is how Magellen circumnavigated the glode in the 16th century.

Screendoor effect is caused by resolution. I think you'll loos a lot of the effect if you use 1024x768.

Thanks for the insight, CraigNT http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You just forgot windaloft, time of the year and the fact that most people don't have a sextant and the navigational schooling, as I have http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Besides that, I doubt Magellan had to find a few hundert meter long moving island and only a few hours, before is sails ran out of fuel http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

I guess 'M' will be the most easiest way to navigate, btw.

Panther, I cant believe you want to upgrade your 5950 already. I just see it as wasting money. Do you really NEED a couple more effects which are barely noticable?? I still play FB on my Radeon 8500 and it plays fine. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

But what the hell, if you're determinied to give away your money to Nvidia/ATI then here goes.

Out of the GF6800 and Radeon X800.

The Geforce is the faster card in general of the new generation. I cant speak for the FB engine or Lomac but I would guess that the geforce would be slightly faster in these too. It will be at least equal.

There are 3 versions of the 6800 at present.
There is the 'vanilla' 6800, the 6800 GT , and the 6800 ultra. All are faster than the Radeon price equivalents, and of the reviews I've seen the 6800 GT is the best value of the 3. The 'vanilla' 6800 is not much faster than your 5950.

All are horrendously expensive tho and will surely drop massively in price in a few months time. Here in the UK the 6800 GT is about 290, but this card is your best bet if you REALLY want to upgrade.

PS. can I buy your 5950 if you do. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

PPS. I think you are mad. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hello Xiolablu3,

Thanks for the tips on possible VGA upgrades.

Yes, you are right - up to a point. Upgrading from my 5950 would make no difference to IL-2 (which plays with perfect smoothness and ALL settings at max). It would make VIRTUALLY no difference to FB/AEP, which plays with perfect smoothness on settings within a whisker of max. Only at ABSOLUTE MAX settings does it really falter and only then when the action heats up.

In fact, ALMOST ALL the games and sims I play can be run perfectly at max settings.

Trouble is, ALMOST ALL ain't really good enough for me, because I'm one of those pain-in-the-**** pedantic perfectionists. Perhaps the best illustration of my disappointment is with LOMAC. Just doing the training missions, I can't have the settings any higher than about 75 percent. If I try any higher, she starts to chug-chug-chug. Reckon it'd be like a slide show if I got into some heavy action. Yes, I have installed the 1.02 patch, got the latest graphics & sound card drivers, latest version of directX, optimized settings etc etc.

Bottom line is, if my system struggles with LOMAC now, what's it gonna struggle with in 3 months time, and 3 months after that? I'd like to have a margin of AT LEAST six months of being able to play EVERYTHING at full settings. Shouldn't this be possible?

If being a 'perfectionist' and wanting to play LOMAC at full settings without my system struggling makes me open to accusations of madness, then so be it! I plead GUILTY AS CHARGED! Send the men in white coats to take me away for basket weaving lessons!

Anyway, thanks again for the tips and in any case, It'll probably be at least a couple of months before I actually have the money to upgrade so with any luck, the prices may have come down by then.

I'd be happy with the idea of selling you my FX5950 Ultra, but I do live in Australia so that might add a bit to the cost of this transaction!

Anyway, best wishes and happy gaming/simming
