Dunno about the Nvidia, but I have the 9800 Pro and have never looked back.

12-30-2004, 12:45 AM
ive got the 9800pro sapphire it works like a charm i dont know if the 6800gt is the same price though. search online and look at benchmarks for newer games and compare the two cards.

12-30-2004, 01:06 AM
The 6800 GT will be faster than the 9800 (maybe quite a bit faster) and it supports the new 3.0 Shaders. (neither do the newer X600 and X800 ATI cards)

As said above take a good long look at the benchmarks online.

My preference is ATI but I want to be fair. It would be apples and oranges if they we're both newer generation cards ... except for the shaders.

Also availability may be a factor for you.

I'm running a 9800XT and I've seen 6800/256MB run faster and 128's run close. If I bought a new card right now I'd probably buy a X800XT PE ... anything less and I'd probably buy a 6800 Ultra or GT.

I ordered a 9800 PRO a month ago,got it but it was not working. So I gave it back and for a month I'm waiting for replacement. It pisses me of coz the 9800PRO are incredibly hard to get, checked all online stores in Poland and can't get a single one.THe 6800 GT I mentioned is a lot more easy to order, lots of them in shoos. I was thinking about the Pixel Shader 3http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif and 16 pipelines or whatever they are calledhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif and the difference in price is 99 polish zloty, circa 30 bucks or a bit more. The 256 9800 Pro is of exactly the same price as 6800GT above, but again - ipossible to find...

12-30-2004, 01:13 AM
BTW, I also pfrefer ATI cards, but my own money spent on the card was about 60 bucks so it is really no matter if i go for the Nvidia or Ati.We have such saying in Poland - don;t look into teeth of horse somebody gave you.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Good choice - the 9800Pro is semi-obsolete. The 6800GT is not.

6800GT...hands down.

12-30-2004, 07:15 AM
The benchmarks Ive seen the 6800GT offers a few more fps in Doom3, 3-5 if I remember correctly. In some other areas the numbers were lower, much lower. I cant remember for the life of me where I saw the benchmark results, but it was enough to cancel my order for the GT and decide to stick with my 9800Pro. In Canada the 9800Pro is around $250 now, the GT is about $550-$600. Big difference in price for not much gain, if your going to spend the ammount on a GT my advice is spend a little more on the Ultra.

The 3.0 shaders is strickly a marketing ploy IMHO, you can have the exact same water with an ATI card with minor card and settings adjustments. Have a look in the Public IL2/AEP/PF section of our forum.

i have 9800 pro and i have nothing bad to say about it! Works like a charm!!

12-30-2004, 07:49 AM
I have used Nvidia cards for years and no probs. Have recently been using a 6800 Ultra with great graphics results. With help of good people on these boards, you may tweak a little more and get a bit better performance. Good luck.

The question isn't whether the 9800 or 6800 are good cards...rather which is better. And since the question is posted in this forum, I would assume relevance to this flight sim is pertinent.

The 6800GT is faster than the 9800 pro...period!

Here is a review from firingsquad that actually uses IL2 in its tests. Though it doesn't include the 9800 pro in the test, all the cards listed are faster. See for yourself.

look here: http://firingsquad.com/hardware/pny_verto_6800gt/

I have both cards..... they both are good.. Are you talking 256 or 128? OCd or normal? I have a 6800GTOCd 256 and it is a decent card. Im going to do a reformat of my syatem though because I have too much old stuff on there and I want to start from scratch. I replaced my 9800Pro 128 with the GF card. Both are good cards but IMO my 6800 is betterr than my 9800.. and I am a huge ATI fan. Still... but at the price i paid for this card i couldnt pass it up.

12-30-2004, 08:40 AM
The 6600gt stock runs PF within 3 fps of a heavily overclocked 9800xt (44/47fps) with much better image quality. - That's a $180 video card with 128 meg vs a 9800xt/256. I've tested them on virtually identical systems. - And I've owned only ati cards before this.

12-30-2004, 09:04 AM
Interesting thread, but needs a clarification...

The GeForce 6600GT alone smokes the 9800PRO and 9800XT in DOOM 3, by several FPS. The 6800GT is faster in DOOM3 than anything ATI has to offer right now, one step below the 6800 Ultra. The game seems to be optimized for NVIDIA's feature set at the moment.

Where would I find a 6800GT 128MB for 9800PRO 128MB prices?!?! Everywhere I look the 6800GT is over $300.00, where I can get a 256-bit 9800PRO 128MB for as low as $189.00.

Maybe, the 6800 is an LE or plain 6800? If I could land a Geforce 6800GT 128MB for $200, all of my graphics questions would be answered as fast as I could order it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

12-30-2004, 09:14 AM
Well,I'm not buying it for 500 bucks but for 1299 polish zloty, it is about 250 o r a bit more bucks. It is a bargaian, I don't have the money to go for the Ultra version, also I don't want to overclock it.From the whole price I paid onli 250 polish zlotys ,the rest was paid for me,so I don't want to go to far with that.I believe that the 6800 GT by Asus would serve quite a long time...If nowadays any graphics card can laste a long time without being obsoletehttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And yes,I would love to see some screenshost, please send some if possible.

All the best in the New Year, m8s!

a polish onbline store with computer partshttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

12-30-2004, 09:49 AM
Ah, although I do not read Polish, I did manage to get that the card has 700MHz memory. I didn't realize that 128MB and 256MB 6800GT's have different memory clock speeds. 700MHz vs 1000MHz.

You're saying that price in USD is about $250.00?!?

Isn't it closer to $435.00 USD? Which would make much more sense to me.

12-30-2004, 09:54 AM
For canadian...,

12-30-2004, 10:08 AM
well, the price is about 300 bucks as i calculated again, however i'm not sure what is the exchange rate - dollar-zloty.I know that dollars went donw lately.anyway...it is ordered, got an email with confirmation of my order, just have to wait for my new toyhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

this guy seems to be comparing a 6800 card to a 9800 pro.

a 6800 is NOT a 6800GT i think he added the GT to his description of the 6800 128 meg card.

so to me i think he is comparing a 6800 128 meg card to a 256 meg 9800PRO.

if so they are similar but the 6800 is better.

now if he is comparing a 6800GT to a 9800 pro 256 then there is no comparison. the 6800GT is literally light years better than the 9800pro 256

12-30-2004, 10:39 AM
6800 = 12 Pixel Pipelines (128 meg OR 256 meg (like this one (http://www.genitechcomputers.com/products/description/ASUS+V9999GE+Geforce+6800+256MB+GDDR3+%2AGAMER+EDI TION%2A/index.html))

6800GT = 16 Pixel Pipelines (128 meg OR 256 meg)

I replaced my old Nvidia 64mb card with a 9800 pro 256 about 4 weeks ago. While the graphics are outstanding, I have had nothing but problems. Funny, PF ran the most stable but in other new games (Call of Duty, Half Life2, Rome Total War) I have had nothing but a series of crashes to destop, freezes and rebooting. Of course, ATI's tech support has taken the whole week off between Christmas and New Years! I have carefully upgraded the driver to the latest version and used a driver cleaner to makes sure all to old drivers were gone. Last Friday, I updated my chip set as well, and the problem got worse. I had to take out the new card and put the old one back.

Perhaps I just have a bad card, or there is some sort of hardware conflict. My machine is pretty middle of the road-three year old AMD with 1 gig of ram and an lots of fans (open case too). If I don't get it working after New Year, then its back to Nvidia for me.

Anybody else have this problem?

12-30-2004, 12:23 PM
I upgraded from a 9800 Pro to a 6800GT. The GT smokes the 9800 in everything. Some games the results are two-fold.

6800 plain jane version? I'd still go with it.

You're comparing the new generation of cards to the last one. Of course the newer ones will be faster. If you can get the 6800 for the same price as a 9800 then you have a great deal. Buy it now.

12-30-2004, 12:30 PM
I had a problem with the Radeon 9800 Pro I got at the beginnig of Dec.After installing the drivers I was informed that the VPU recovery had to reset the graphic CPU and the commputer will restart. And so on.Loops of such behaviour. If the card was ok I wouldn't be buying the 6800GT 3day.
