View Full Version : Sound mods for CF3(Pretty impressive) - I wish IL-2/FB had them...

I'm a die-hard IL-2 fan but I have to admit the sound in the later mods for CF3 are pretty incredible. I'd like to see something similiar to these or better in the next generation of sims to come from the Oleg team.

I have to admit that even as much as I love Il2 I wish there was a way where I could replace certain sounds to ones of my liking. I guess the best example is for the 50 cal machine guns. I have an impressive wav file of an actual AC firing the machine guns in a test fire and the sound is INCREDIBLE. That is the way a Ma Deuce is supposed to sound like, deafening! I know that Oleg has kept these things from being messed with becuase he feels that all of the sounds are historically accurate I guess. Anyway I wish there were a way to change some of the sounds in the sim.

Any chance you could post that sound file?

Email it to me at garagebay9@garagebay9.com if you don't have a place to put it, I'll host it.

I agree.. also start up sounds of these engines and in flight engine sounds need work. some are ok (p38) some really suck (109 B601/ p51 merlin). and yes the 50s sound like like a single 30 cal MG. For some of us with with Audigy 2 cards would like to use them. I have great wav patches but cant use them.

I agree. Sound is often overlooked in simulators because it is the most superflous and superficial aspect of the game. It adds nothing to gameplay, it only adds atmosphere. Probably why its the only thing CFS3 got right.
Sound is the only aspect of IL2FB that is truly substandard. Flak doesn't 'boom' it 'chinks' and those .50s, they sound like a rattle rather than a deep roar. Its not like any gunfire I've ever heard before. Sound needs a major rework!

Sounds can also have a big negative impact to gameplay, when you're able to hear things you shouldn't from inside the cockpit http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I would never want sounds to affect realism in a negative way. Valid point though, I wish they could be made better without affecting realism. Thats what I would like to see. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The sound mods in CFS3 may sound more exciting, but which are more accurate? Accurate for a WW2 fighter probably means very loud, droning engine noise and distorted voice comms and not a huge amount more. Over headphones or at spouse-friendly listening levels you probably don't get the full effect and need to rely on psychoacoustics. Also the sound of a WW2 plane passing when at an airshow is not necessarily anything like sitting in a WW2 plane when it is running so sound mods that rely on recordings of planes externally for the in-cockpit sounds are probably fairly unrealistic.

I've said this before but probably the best option is create a speaker iso box that you sit on, much like some bassists use in the studio, so you can 'feel' the engine noise.

I think the "ideal" solution from a gamer's perspective would be to have 2 separate sound engines: one for inside cockpit and another for externals. That way, while you're floating down in your chute, you can enjoy those cool airshow sounds http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

I'm sure the devs would rather not have to do the extra work, but it sure would be very appreciated by us, so it's worth asking for http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It might be worth asking for it to be considered for BoB at least.

Yep, I totally agree on the sound issues - we've been asking for better sound since the start of the series... maybe BOB will be the start of something better in this area
(my personal gripe for sounds is the four 20mm cannons in the F4U-1C in PF - sounds more like fastlight machine guns then slower heavier cannons! End gripe)

seems to me that the external sound may need reworking, but internal, once your sound card well tuned, can be quite good in PF..

especially firing sounds...

I just listened to 0.50cal sound on one of sites linked above.. you can hear "pfiouu" sounds of bullets... I seriously doubt you hear anything like that when holding and firing a 0.50cal MG (I never did with smaller calibers anyway http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )
