"A submarine in which the Mafia planned to smuggle millions of pounds of cocaine into Europe has been seized by police.

Details of the drug-trafficking plot were released yesterday by Italy's top anti-Mafia investigator, Piero Grasso, after he returned from an operation in South America. The submarine was under construction in a shipyard and would have been used to elude coastal radar systems, which normally intercept drug-trafficking vessels.

Mr Grasso said: "The Mafia planned to use the submarine to ship cocaine from Colombia to Europe."

They should have let it come over here.

We could have done it like the australians and used it as a test target for the type 212. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

If it was really supposed to head for europe (which i doubt) it must have been real big for carrying enough diesel or it was planned to refuel it several times by ships.

I think its more likely that it was supposed to smuggel the cocaine into the usa.

I believe it was more a small boat like an DSRV rescue boat.

With the market price for cocaine, I bet it would've paid for itself on the first trip or two. Can you even imagine the price of a million pounds of cocaine, let alone a million grams?

Yes, grams are only a fraction of a pound. Coke is usually sold at street level in gram units or even smaller amounts. So, one kilogram of cocaine must be very pricey. These smugglers were planning to use this sub to smuggle millions of pounds of cocaine. The street value of such large amounts of cocaine must be astronomical.

For reference: one kilogram is about 2.2 pounds. There are 1,000 grams in one kilogram, so there are 1,000 units of cocaine in one kilo. I don't know what cocaine sells for on the streets, but you can soon realize how many millions and billions of dollars are to be made selling drugs.

I remember seeing something a while back about some mini-subs confiscated down around Columbia while they were under construction. They were indeed going to be used to try and smuggle drugs into the USA. Do we know what the date on that article is and when the events happened? I could have swore I saw something about that maybe a couple months ago or maybe even the later part of last year. And, yes.....I think the subs would be paid for in, probably a single trip.

This might have worked in the 50's, but not now with satelite's, radar, and SSB688's floating around.. Target prectice http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. Plus the good age old espionage from dock workers...
