I need a new "flight combat" game to play for a while and I thought I would get some impressions before I purchased it.

How does it stack up as a game (combat/flight models) to someone who is used to "IL2 1946" game play?

I have read some of the write-ups (reviews) on the "game up-dates/patches" and it looks kind of cool...

I bought that game a few weeks ago and installed it. I havent really had time to play it properly yet, I quickly set up my controls and did a couple of quick takeoffs landings in a spitfire my initial thoughts were that the flight models are pretty realistic. it's much harder to take off and land then in IL2. The 6DOF is really good you can open the canopy and lean your head right out, you can get up high and look over the nose as your landing and lean right in to look closely at the instruments. On the down side i wasnt impressed at all with the graphics. The ground looks bad if your at low altitude and the cockpit did not look anywhere near as good as in IL2, I thought it could be the graphics settings but i checked and i had them all maxed out! The physics did not seem as real as in IL2, i did a short dogfight scenario and it just didn't feel as real somehow (oh and i did patch it up to date before playing it).

Being fair i only played a few short training flights. I've heard that it can be incredibly imersive so i will make some time at some point to get more involved. Also all my flights were in good cloudless conditions so i have no idea how well clouds/turbulance ect is modeled.

I will keep it on my hard drive!

It's good with the latest update. Nice eye/ear candy too. The campaign is pretty cool to go through.

To bring BOB WOV to life you have to go to Shockwave and downloaded the patches. It is developing into a very good sim. If you have any questions the boys on the WOV forums will quickly help you out.

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif It is well worth adding onto your H/Drive.Don't fall into the trap of comparing F/B with BoB WOV ,they are different beasts doing different jobs.
It is a very big learning curve and the FM seem alot touchier and harder to handle.
The help and support from the shockwave BDG team are second to non and they ENCOURAGE you to test and report ,that is how the sim improves and improves.Thye will listen and where possible look into things.
It has it's quirks but it also has 6 DOF http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif [ I find f/b very hard to fly now without it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif] ,excellent sound.
If you are willing to learn, not expect multiple kills and patch up to the various mods i think you will have an excellent sim on your H/Drive.
Register on shockwave ,be polite and ask for advice and you will get all the help yopu need.

Theres no need for this thread to get into a this is better than this flame fest, theres room for both sims and both have their good and bad points.
For the price you can get it for i would say give it a go.
OH,read the set up and patch guide carefully and check if you use Norton antivirus it can cause some problems with some people.
Come and visit and say hi over on the shockwave forums. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Absolutely the best way to start in BOBWOV is with the "quick missions" and one on one dogfighting. That way you start having a lot of fun right away!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

Thanks for the quick advice, this was exactly what I had in mind! But fact is, I didnĀ“t even get to start the game! I installed the game, patched it to 2.06 then to 2.061. Finally I rebooted, started the game, main screen comes up and then I got the message from Windows "BOB2 had a problem and must be terminated" (if I get the translation from the german right). I deinstalled now and try it once again, first unpatched and then one by one to see whatĀ“ll happen, wish me luck!!

Funnily enough this may be due to the fact that your desktop resolution has been set to 120 dpi. Hopefully, resetting this to 96 dpi will run the game.

Hi Spacefrog,

Redownload the 2.06 self-installer just in case you had a bad download as we have had a few.

Then reinstall the self-installer.

Can you plaese poat your PC spec's as BOBII is a bit more demanding than on your PC than IL2 IMHO.

I hope you do not run Norton or alot of spyware.

Here's what I'd like to know. At high altitudes, does the horizon fade into invisibility at unrealistically short ranges, such that "the edge of the Earth" is many degrees below the true horizon?

This is probably the most annoying fault with IL2's graphical display. It's a real pain to have to look at the artificial horizon all the time, even in perfectly clear weather.

That's the only downside for me. It's a b1tch to fly compared to IL2 and I thought IL2 was the hardest years ago.

I wonder what Lt. Col. Monroe Q Williams would think about BOB:WOV? Consider this text from another thread.

Are the flight models in most games realistic?

"I have never understood why Sim developers think, if you do a 360 degree turn in a steep bank, you are suppose to stall out, flip into a flat spin, and crash. I think this may be a factor in the pilots coming from IL2 not liking the planes in cfs 3. I have flown with the 353rd Virtual Fighter Group for about two and half years. When IL2 came out, most of the 25 pilots moved over to IL2. I preferred to stay in Janes WW2 and fly American planes. On occasion , some of the pilots come back to Janes to fly with me.....They find it weird and different. So, if you fly the "harder to fly" , "Easy to stall and spin", type Aircraft , it becomes the norm. But, THAT DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE REALISTIC. These planes are much more stable than that. In 22 years of flying Airforce planes, I never personally knew of one plane that went into a flat spin." "

Personally I have to say it seems - much to my regret - to disagree with my PC: it takes literally ages to load and it crashes quite often.

I have to say that this does not seem to happen to other people though.

The guys over at shockwave will clear all this right up for you if you just ask. They are absolutely excellent with these types of problems as long as you computer and video card are powerful enough to run the game.. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

I just cannot get myself to like it. The graphics are mediocre, especially the landscape textures. My perception is the planes do not fly fluidly, they seem to skip frames of animation. Not choppy, but they just seem to skip frames here and there. Tons of planes in the air are cool, but for me that is about it.

A few suggestions:

1. Make sure you patch to version 2.06 and then the little 'micro-patch' version 2.06.1

2. Make sure you have the absolute latest version DX9.0C from microsoft's website - yes, there are MULTIPLE versions of DX9.0C and Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom has not renamed them...

3. Absolutely get the new summer terrain mod which -with a few more refinements - will be the next official terrain. It is a MASSIVE improvement over the current stock terrain. Get it here: http://shockwaveproductions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7843

Also, some people do not know that you need to set a few video settings OUTSIDE the game within your video driver - specifically anti-aliasing and V-sync ON which make BIG differences in the graphics quality. There are MANY tweaks to settings that make big differences in visual quality. Also a broad range of customizable FOV settings and native support of widescreen resolutions.

4. Try the new beta FMs which finally enable prop torque effects (among many other improvements to the FMs across the board): http://shockwaveproductions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8561 Oh, be sure to scroll down to the 9th post on page 1 of that thread and read my post about the spin parameters - its important.

5. Read or at least browse through the 2.06 game manual located in your DOCS folder. It is chock-full of stuff that is very important. I can not stress this enough. Often people do not RTFM and miss out on many great features or think something is 'wrong' and there is actually a setting they can adjust to their taste/liking.

6. Here is a thread explaining the BoB2 key commands and the corresponding IL2 keys where applicable. Very helpful to people used to IL2: http://shockwaveproductions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8331

**************

BoB2 presently is not multi-player, for now it is strictly OFF-line. It has a high learning curve - RTM!!!

As others have said, BoB2 is not "better" than IL2, it is DIFFERENT. Both are very good games and each has strengths and weaknesses. With the dearth of decent combat flight sims out at the moment it is worth a look and at $20+/- is not a wallet buster.

The overwhelming majority (over 99%) of the people who have in the past and are currently working on BoB2 are totally unpaid volunteers.

Hi knightflyte,

BOBII does take a bit more resourse than IL2 IMHO. What are your PC spec's?

Loading is a function of processor CPU and menory speed on BOBII and most games which are increasing (like FSX). (however if you run spyware, virus, or firewall software that slows the loading all bet are off.

For comparison, I load the Historic London mission in BOBII in 25 sec on my rig (specs on my sig).

Norton KOed BOB II in my computer, too. Dumped it, and all was well. As much as I like some things about BOB II, I do not enjoy it as a sim experience. I prefer FSX now. I am eagerly awaiting the Shockwave Flying Tigers sim. The models look fabulous.

i think SOW is gonna be much better.
but then BoB 2 Wov is running on a much older Engine.

i remember playing the first one.
it was the best flightsim out backthen.
until the original IL2 came out.

the cool thing is the ability to be air commander and cordinate the whole Battle of britain

Well I happen to like BoB:WOV also. The graphics may not be quite what we are used to in IL-2, but the flight model reflects what the vets have conveyed, and its 6DOF: I figure for the price its no going wrong.

I've been too busy doing some graphics work or I'd be flying more BoB and IL-2.

If you have TrackIR its definitely worth a whirl.

Cheers
