Edit: Lets leave discussion of aircraft performance in the patch until we all have the real version please.

I wouldn't worry too much.
It would seem that most planes in FB have had their vertical performance toned down, and the 109 is no exception- except that now, it is probably THE deadliest energy fighter in the game, with the possible exception of the D9. The 109's performance in this regard was only abbreviated slightly, whereas most VVS planes received a big vertical performance hit.
The G2's performance, especially, is very formidable, and the MG151/15 and 151/20 are deadlier than before.
E4 doesn't climb nearly as fast as it did before, but it still performs better than other period planes.
F2, F4 benefit from more punch.
MK108 armed 109s benefit from a much more accurate weapon with awesome power. (G6A/S, K)
Haven't flown the 20mm G6's too much yet.
The 109 family is alive and well in beta08
S!
Chris
PS, all variants of 109 take more damage now.

The top speed of the 109's is down where it belongs now, but they still climb good.

I haven't played test08 online, but against ace level AI adversaries the 109's absolutely rule until the La-5 and LaGG'43 make their appearance - and then only because the AI planes like to turn into vertical head-ons (still very risky in an 109) when someone dives on them.
After this point it gets harder to score hits thanks to increasingly high closure speeds but the 109 still excells in the vertical, especially after the 3km mark.
OT: the B-239 is a different plane now. Much more nimble, and retains E better. Turns with I-16 and absolutely rapes the hurricane.

Yes, speed is reduced but climb is better than everything else. It is also harder now to pull out of a high speed dive, the elevator gets very heavy at speed. Also, the G6 can use the MK108 as well as the G6A/S

The best suprise is the ability to win a spiral climb starting at 1000m in a 109G6 early versus an ace AI La5FN, one could never do this in IL2 nor FB 1.0
