youre missing many contending types for each country, sir

youre even missing some countries themselves; dont worry, a roundel-head will be along shortly to sort you out http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

anyhow, the best bomber is always the one that sorties reliably and consistiently, delevers its load, and returns crew home

Shouldn't the DB3/IL4 be included for the Soviets? And isn't the Pe3 just the heavy fighter version of the Pe2?

In fairness, i think hes taken them from the game so maybe he means them in this context?

i reckon the best bomber would of been a lancaster with american defensive armanent.

Some versions of the Lancaster were installed with .50 machine guns on Harris' request. I also believe that the RAF force of Lancasters bound for Japan would be armed likewise.

Pre-war the intention was for defensive armament to move to 20mm cannon but the war required expediencies so the 'ideal bomber' development (which would have included aircraft of the B-29 and B-36 class) didn't materialise. In the context of utilising Lancasters it was hoped to quickly uprate them to .50 calibre guns but US production was in heavy demand and so .303 was retained, with rapid increase of tail turrets from 2 to 4 guns, and in some cases mid upper too (Halifax).

Tiger force was to be equipped with the Lancaster IV, aka Lincoln which was armed with a mix of .50s and 20mm cannon but still lacked ventral armament as H2S was in the way.

Lancasters did mount various ventral guns - e.g. FN.64 barbette with two .303 Brownings, Preston-Green blister with a .303 Vickers K or .50, and some unofficial mounts of 20mm cannon. Many had none, though.

Other bombers in RAF service mounting .50s included Venturas, Halifaxes, Fortresses, Liberators, etc.

In terms of the original poll the US list should be expanded with the B-26 and A-26.

Simply asking "What's best" is impossible to answer without some sort of qualification. Best at high level bombing? Night bombing? Low level ground attack? Anti-ship? Most survivable?

Best looking? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

There can be no doubt that amongs heavy bombers the B-29 rules supreme. That thing was a technological leap ahead of the compition. my 2 cents.

Why no PFEIL? aka Do-335? It's bomb load capbility is a lot more than the Me262!

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.giffirst off Im where talking about some of the bombers in Il2, but the RAF only has pre-war bombers and I know the mosqutio is a mid/late war plane but theirs only 2 and I need at least 5 aircraft. So thats why I left out the RAF, but I just doing a poll on some of the Bombers that are used the most in Il2.

Well, we still need to know "best at what". Just looking at the USAAF list, there are 3 heavies, one medium and one light bomber. Each of those categories had their own requirements and missions. While the B-29 is certainly the best heavy bomber in that group, the A-20 was much better at providing close air support to ground troops or attacking ships.
