Wondering about doing a Bf-110G campaign.

Would the heavy cannon armament (3.7's, Mk 108's etc) have been just developed as an anti-B17 device?? Or would they have been installed as ground attack weapons for the Eastern Front. If the latter, anyone know when the start date for that load-out would have been?

BK 3,7 cm

The 1930 from the Flak 18 developed weapon, were a recoil operated weapon with central locked catch, which was "disturbance susceptible" something. First some Hs 129 B-2 of airplanes were equipped as battle fliers except the armament of two mg 151/20 with one UC each 3.7 and 12 shot ammunition and tested with success. The employment of this machine was limited because of the bombardment sensitivity of the French Gn├┬┤me Rh├┬┤ne engines to the IV. Relay of the SG 9. The employments, which a "tank relay in such a way specified" flew under the guidance of Colonel Rudel at the east front with machines of the type JU 87 G, are substantially more well-known to which under each bearing area beside the shock struts a BK 3.7 were installed. Colonel Rudel shot with these weapons personally over 500 tanks and an armored battle airplane. The employment of so equipped machines is to be due to personal initiative of Colonel Rudel, who carried forward the first in May 1943 being available attempt machine and from in the middle of July until November 1943 already over 100 tanks shot. Data: Caliber of 37 mm, cadence 140 firing/min, mass 275 kg and length 3750 mm

MK 108
Between 1941 and 1942 Rheinmetall Borsig developed a compact 3 cm mounted gun, which should be suitable particularly for the fight British and American long-range bombers with strong defense armament. Technically the cannon was appropriate for cheap mass production, since to 80 % sheet metal coining/shaping hurry as well as not alloyed steel grades use found. The charging took place pneumatically, the ignition of the cartridges still during the advance of the mass catch electrically, so that a part of the recoil impulse was compensated. Starting from in the middle of 1943 the cannon based on the Becker system (see mg FF/M) was used above all rigidly built in many German attack aircrafts.

the first Bf110G-2/R1 came in service end of january 1943 at the easternfront, used as tankhunters.

they were no succes , so they were put out of this task around april 43 - propably the plane was to big or not manouverable enough at low altitude for this dangerous task.

around august 1943 the LW began to use them against heavy bombers in the west.
