Not that I'm expecting an IL-2-level sim from a console, but c'mon!!! Here's the rest of the game info (http://ps2.ign.com/articles/631/631877p1.html).

The whole basically looks like a 3D version of that old top-down shooter 1942. You (and you pretty much alone) against wave after wave of faceless Japanese fighters.

This shot clearly proves that P-38 in our game is undermodelled! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. If Oleg doesn't fix it in the next patch, I'm gonna send him this shot! Be sure! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Does that mean we can fly over weapon power ups ? I always liked that cool, tri-cannon you can get.

And the missles. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

From the article :

To make sure that the game can appeal to players of different needs, developer IR Gurus has included both Pro and Arcade controls. In the Pro controls, players can expect to use their knowledge of flight and such words like pitch, yaw, and roll. With this control set-up the left analog stick is used for pitch (up and down) and roll (rolling left and right). The right analog stick is used for the yaw (turning left and right) as well as the throttle.

LOL, sounds like this beta 04 everyone's been talking about. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

My favorite "POW" (remember?!) was those little "baby" fighters that would join up on your wings and match your fire. I was always so sad when one of them got taken out. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

their high level terrain and trees look better

What? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

07-07-2005, 09:17 AM
What? Didnt you ever play 1942 on the old Nintendo (NES)?

07-07-2005, 09:27 AM
well at least it has the tempest http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

and wait..what mk spit is that, the XIV? or a little earlier? WTF? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

A YAK?!?! "HEROES OF THE PACIFIC" where does the YAK come from? (I know there was fighting between IJA and USSR over Sakhalin island but still)

AND a bearcat, this just gets worse with every page of screens

Looks pretty much like Pacific fighters for the console gamer. Could be a fun little game - If you were prepared to suspend a bit of disbelief at the door and approach it as such. I may well rent it for a weekend when it comes out and see what it's like. I was interested when looking at the rest of the images to see what looked like a flyable P-61 and a couple of aircraft with russian markings (looked like a P-39 and some form of Yak) in there.

Didn't know that the Russians flew in the pacific http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Speaking in my proffesional capacity as an artist who works for a game-developer, some of those screen shots look like early mock-ups that have had quite a lot of re-touching in photoshop. That said, the ones that look pretty much unadulterated look pretty good in a lot of places.

That excuse for a P-38 Lightning seems to have serious issues with its flaps. They aren't Fowler flaps, and in order to get into the airplane, the pilot would have to step on them!

as much as this game seems laugh in the face of even any attempt at realism, I have a Ps2 and you know what, I'm gonna buy it, screw it, some shameless arcade fun can't hurt anyone.

I'm guessing that certain concessions had to be made to the way some aircraft were modeled. On a console you have much less memory to play with and if its a ps2 then everything has to be stored on and run off a single DVD. I would imagine it was decided that all aircraft flaps would work in the same way in order to shave a chunk of the final code size - especially if one way would fit most of the aircraft involved and any other ways would only be used on one or two individual ac's.

Aside from that I thought it looked pretty good as an ingame model. I've just watched the gameplay movies they had on IGN and they looked pretty fun too. All from a third person view so you can see your plane, but it looked ok and there will probably be some sort of pit view available in the finished article. I shouldn't expect much realism from the flight model - even in the 'pro' mode. But there is nothing wrong with a good arcade game from time to time - if its not pretending to be something else.

The props dont look too bad either.... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Edited, I'd think http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

They get a Tempest, Bearcat, Black Widow and TBD Devastator right off...on the other hand, they only have Zeros and Petes to shoot at, and the Zeros look like an odd mix of type 21 and 52--and what's with the target-tow paint job on the Tempest?

That Spit actually looks like a late model Seafire, possibly a Mk 47.

Nice eye-candy, but controlling an airplane with your thumbs is just...wrong.

The P-47 has three bladed props?! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Their muzzle flashes are wayyyy overmodelled http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
Even compared to what they used to be in IL2/FB
Horror! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

The problem is the thig-a-ma-jigs on the carrier are standing up instead of horizontal

07-07-2005, 03:36 PM
Landing a P-38 in 4.01 on a stationary carrier is a piece of cake. A lot more planes are now easier to land on stationary carriers like the GO229, ME262. B25, BF110. Still can't get the TB3 to stop in time!

As far as the console game, it looks like a console game.

IL-2 has nothing on this sexy lil' gem! I still remember the password for the 23rd level: TY19U. That was 15 years ago!

You know what I'm going to do?

I'm going to make a couple calls to some American aircraft manufacturers.

07-07-2005, 07:09 PM
US insignia on the insides of the booms, too.

Track, please! The only way I could do it was to do a serious side-skid on the deck which would cause the tires to need replacement in real life.

Its the separate little jets of vomit comming out of his nose that make it really funny http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif
