What's the best way install AEP.Can you install over Patch 1.22 or do you have to start all over again. Uninstall FB to version 1 then install AEP to get 2.0??

Its just that I have heard people doing it either way but just wanted to make sure I do it correctly so I don't mess up any of the new features, planes ,missions etc..

Could anyone offer advice on this please.

Many thanks

You can install AEP over ANY version of FB.
Having saif that:
Make sure the installation path to FB is the default path, or you will have problems and;
Many recommend a "clean" install of AEP
(FB retail version and THEN AEP over it) just to head off any issues before they arise.
I installed AEP over 1.22, no problems except my V-1 rocket did not show up in the object ditor; if this happens, you must manually edit your bldcfg file.

I'm kind of curious to see how it will work for me, but I have to wait until I can get AEP...

Blues, the most important thing that you have to do before you start is BACK UP your current version. The whole folder, all 1.6+ GB. That way, no matter how screwy the installation gets, you won't lose what you had.

When I get it, I'm going to back up first, then try over 1.22 first. If something doesn't work, I can uninstall and then start from a fresh install.

Probably the important thing is that the InstallShield knows where the game is installed. I don't know, but I don't think that it needs to be the default location.

There are threads about this, including in the sticky, over at the Community Help forum.

Do what you want, but AEP looks for the default path for FB. There were a few folks here in the US who experienced trouble with their install, and IIRC, it was traced to a modified installation path for FB. Maybe this was changed for the European release, I don't know.

Foor myself was rather simple. Since Idid a format of my HDD ,I have installed FB first. Not default path but D:\flight\combat\il2.
Then, installed AEP over the fresh copy of FB (unpatched).Took me 10 minutes.Noo sweeet. The installer checcks the registry entry for FB,is for that it doeesn't prompt you for location.Which is normal if you ask me.

OK- I was wrong.
I went back and looked up the threads from when AEP was causing install problems with US users. This is from Steve V., a tech mod. His word can definitely be relied on:

" posted 05-03-04 12:30
A possible cause for the error from ORR:
One more important notice.
Installator of AEp will upack files only in officially installed FB.
If you have just copy of FB on you hard drive, doesn't matter pirated or saved for any purpose, then installer will say that he can't find FB.
If FB is installed officially by original install (doesn't matter which version), AEP installator will find the FB on any path or any hard drive of your PC.
The simplest solution is to uninstall/reinstall FB and then install AEP. There haven't been any reported problems I am aware of with that proceedure".

Sorry for my "cornfusion" guys- http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

Just to be clear, when I purchase AEP tonight do I really need to re-install FB?. I have the regular out-o-da-box FB in the default place with only some saved games. It should be OK to just load it up...don cha think?

Thanks

IL2Canuck, just to be clear: make a backup copy of your installation folder first. Simply copy (not move) the whole "IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles" folder and all of its contents to a safe location. This assumes you have space for it.

After that, try installing AEP. If it screws up, you can take measures, but you will at least have a backup copy. (You can even fly from the backup copy if need be.)
