I used to like to make desktops for yuks and I haven't done it for a while. I've been trying to figure out GIMP but it's a slow curve for me

Anyway I took a screenshot that I think might make a nice desktop but it's a bit too dark.

This is compressed to 80%. It's a straight screenie, with a very slight amount of blur to soften some edges, no other re-touching.

I know some of you guys are great with PS and whatnot. I'm still trying to justify the money for it but I like to mess around with pics

What would really bring this pic to life?

you have only deleted parts of the control cabels , the parts you left stick out bad . . . . .

I do the same thing. Change my desk about every 3rd day. The sunsets/rise with some clouds always look good. I prefer over water myself but I'd use that for 3 days. Well done.

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I didn't delete anything; it's because the pic is compressed 20% to fit here. The only editting other than resizing is about 1% blur to round off some hard edges

thanks. I actually tried it over water but I got frustrated getting the pic just right. I wanted the golden reflectiion-type water to be the background but I'd always end up either with the pic so dark I couldn't see any a/c detail, or a cloud was in the way http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Second that. I reckon the straight screenshots at the right time of day - usually dawn or dusk - can look frigg'n sensational.

It's my humble opinion that having a 'powerful' editor gives one the tendency to overdo effects. Some of the best screenies I've seen have had no or just basic editing.

Just a thought.

Have you considered darkening the 'planes down to silouettes and bring up the red and yellow -in a sort of dramatic sunset vibe?

Just a thought.

Did you use anti-aliasing? Put it up high for screenies (don't matter if it kills your frame rates for a still shot)

It looks good, like zappa said i would go to the ati or nvidia control panel and just throw on aa and af quick for screens.

duplicate the picture layer and make the backround plane lighter then the foreground one.

Then merge both layers and adjust color saturation contrast and brightness.

I like yours better, Chuck, but just for interest's sake it came out with a colder look by auto correcting the curves and applying gaussian blur/unsharp mask.

Looks too much like smth drawn by Turner - if its gonna be this way then the fighters need to be passed through a posterisation filter and loose some detail (and gain "airyness")
