I saw one in action yesterday. The game looked and ran great but I couldn't see any difference between the 7800 and my 6800. I think this game engine has gotten to the point that you don't need the cutting edge gear to get everything out of the sim.

I disagree, Bigbear. If you want to run "Perfect" mode with water=3, effects=1, clouds=1, etc, etc, you need the very best cpu + the very best video card. But the important thing to remember is you need a good cpu to get the best out of a good video card. I'd actually choose a top line cpu over a top line video card because you can tone down the video options and lose less "fun" than only playing 4 vs 4 dogfights, which is how you reduce the load on the cpu. In fact, I've taken to playing in perfect for the European maps as I hate the look of perfect water for rivers.

If you have a gig of ram, a decent processor over 2.5 ghz and a graphics card no slower than a 9800 pro you can run this game all out on 1024 x 768.

Well you can....but not all the way out. I have pretty much what you describe and I did have to cut some corners.

Basically, if money is no object, the new Athlon FX-57 (which bests everything it was thrown against except multithreading apps), plus a GeForce 7800 (or 2) will let you run at Water3, high res, high AA and high AS and still have top level FPS for smooth gameplay.

A 9800 as you describe is not even capable of running at the Water3 level. So yeah, if money is no object and you want the top level everything then this is the card to run.

But not many people have that luxury.

Just remeber that this games out of the box has cut tne the objectw way down in game. If you build a single player mission with a correct/ proper amount of objects the game screaches to a snails pace even on a high end system. Next year I will be getting at lest a AMD 64 4800+ with 2 7800 in SLI for BOB...

I have 9800pro 512mb 2.8Ghz and i can play Pf with full options at 1024x768 ( water 2) alway between 35 and 45 fps.
Don't need more powerfull graphic card for pf.

Yup, yer right. What you need to run PF is one thing, what I want to run PF is another. I've been running PF on my 5y/o PC since it came out. Sure it ran fine and at decent settings I thought (especially after 4.01). But looking at killer screenies, reading about and seeing all the eye candy I was missing, I felt I was really missing out on alot. Not only in PF, but other games too. Then it happened, I saw PF being played on a high-end PC (Athon64 3500+, PCI-E 6800 Ultra, 1 gig PC3200) and nearly shat myself. Unbelievable! Whole new game, fantastic look and feel, immersive, the sounds, the fx, I couldn't believe what I had been missing! I felt like I had just wasted years of mediocre gameplay. I seriously couldn't believe it was the same game! So when my PC finally crapped out, I was actually relieved. Heres my old rig followed by the new one I'm building.
