I'm just curious if anyone has seen "Miracle at St. Anna" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1046997/)? I saw it the other day and enjoyed it...what do you think? I'm curious (I have some other thoughts, but would like to hear from others).

Also, has anyone seen "Australia" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455824/)? I understand that it is a movie with "romance"(and stuff, ugh), but how is the "war stuff"? Is the footage with the combat, and the aeroplanes fun? In the tv add they show the Japanese bombing Darwin...anything I haven't seen in a computer generated attack?

Australia is way, way ,way too long. It is nothing more than a traditional American western story set in Australia. Don't waste your time or money.

Yes they were there...during the Japanese attack but nothing worth paying for. My senses were dulled by the length of the movie by the time the attack occurred. I really don't remember that many of the details about the Japanese planes.

"Australia" was the most dreary, pointless excursion I've seen in years. Repressed all memory of it. That big-eyed cute kid just about drove me crazy---was like being served a cup of tea with half a pound of sugar in it. The grande finale with scenes from (no joke) "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and the recent "Pearl Harbor" (hmm, didn't realize the U.S. battleship fleet was based in Australia in 1942) was so over the top I was reduced to justifiable laughter.

I ceased watching Spike Lee's efforts since he left behind art for politics. His worthy Malcolm X film was his last good work.

Australia got such hilariously bad reviews that I would never bother seeing it.

Actally i quite enjoyed australia - it is what it is. Like berg said, its a romantised western. It is too long though and the war stuff is meh.

Nice filming though and the scenery is great.

I hadn't heard of Miracle at St. Anna until a few days ago. I looked up some reviews and it does not sound encouraging.

I wouldn't even consider watching Australia if I were you. Nicole Kidman seems to have morphed into a creepy looking praying mantis somewhere along the way (definitely be packing the aeroguard when she's around). Hugh Jackman's voice in it is absurd too. I could just imagine Baz Luhrmann stopping the shoot to constantly ask him to deliver his lines from even further down his diaphragm. "Laconic! More Laconic!" His character was too much like Ace Rimmer to take seriously. An epic failure of a movie, although most people in Oz are too embarrassed or polite to say it yet. Crocodile Dundee with a Lord of the Rings budget.

Miracle at St. Ana was good... not excellent.. but good.. For me it is just good seeing the story told... there were some casting issues that I felt could have been done better.. like this guy who looked like he was 40 crying for his nmother... just before he got whacked.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I was like... "Oh.. come on Spike!! and there were some plot twists that could have been done better.. and for the technical freaks.. there were some vehicles that were not right.. but the film was not a bad one.. worth the time to watch IMO.

I remember watching some extremely painful cable TV chat show from Seattle or Portland or some such place one time where they had the cast of Red Dwarf meeting their teen fan base and this early/mid teen old asked what 'smeg' was.

Oh they squirmed. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Just think, the money they spent on 'Australia', they could have made several series of Red Dwarf (just a thought on relative merit), or made that film Robert Llewellyn hinted about, I would have been one happy bunny. Then again, would I want Craig Charles back after 'Coronation Street' http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Red Dwarf: The Epic Movie

I think "Australia" was meant to be an epic western parody ... but if so it did not work.

It basically, as everyone has already said, comes across as a long remake of the classic 1940's/1950's bad-guy/good-guy western but set in the Northern territory with lots of CGI.

The bombing of Darwin is a minor part of the film and there does not seem to have been a huge effort to make the aviation segments particualrly accurate (for example the attacking planes included 71 (yes 71 !!) G3M2 and G4M1 medium bombers but not one appear in the film).

The scenery was nice.

Overall way to "American" (Australia at that time was ridiculously British) and far to long.

Red Dwarf along with Blackadder are my favourite comedies. These ones have me in stitches every time. Wish I could write like their writer does. Being able to make people laugh must be a gift! Must get the DVD boxsets!

Will one of you chaps give us yanks the heads up when Red Dwarf: Back to Earth airs? Also, I'm not watching if there's no Dwayne Dibbly!
