The numeric number is the staffel or squadron. Staffeln also had specific colors, "White 1" for example is the 1st Staffel leaders aircraft.

The roman numeral is the Gruppe or Group.

3/JG51 is the third staffel but is a part of the first Gruppe or I/JG51.

III/JG51 is the Third Gruppe and contains Staffeln 7, 8 and 9. Gruppes are identified by symbols on the fuselage:

There was some reorganization that went on at various time period adding both Gruppes and Staffeln.

Other markings were developed for such things as the Reichsverteidigung bands:
