HI Sir Oleg Maddox. If you happen to get a chance, Please view this website wwww.projectoffset.com

I'm not sure if you are going to be implementing this level of realism in the flightsim since I haven't personally got a chance to see any BOB screenshots, but It would be so wonderful to have this level of lighting detail in a flightsim game!!

wwww.projectoffset.com

you will really enjoy their presentation I'm sure =)

P.S. I'm not sure if you have viewed this post already but I have edited the original post to be more presentable to someone of your stature hehe my apologies for the earlier version that seemed a bit brash. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

im still looking for proof that an acutal engine has been made. thier site looks like a bunch of concepts and not much more.

If what I think is true, is true...then what Oleg is working on may look a bit like this...but in the flight sim world. Engine considerations are definately different because of the scale involved but I think we're in for something incredible.

every engine for any special purpose (flight sim, rts, fps , whatever) has to be optimised for what it is doing. So, this offset engine is good for FPS (if this engine exists) and oleg has to focus on other aspects to get a good flight sim engine.

Man, if that game looks like that than it will be on my hard drive!
Funny thing is yesterday I was thinking how cool it would be to have a sci-fi/gothic type of FPS!
Thanks for the link.

Ever seen pics from UT2007? And this engine is allready finished - they're just working on the game around it! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

S~!

Oleg I am with the UT engine people. I proposed it several times myself here in orr and to CrazyIvan.

Oleg was an old UT99 player and knows it well.

However lets be realistic, they have already mapped out the basics by now. They are not likely to switch from their proprietary and therefore far more secure code -- which THEY own -- to a ready to go engine.

Far too many pitfalls.

As far as the engine goes I have faith in Oleg and Team's judgement for the BOB series.

I doubt that UT engine or any FPS engine could handle 1000 x 1000 km maps.

Special thing bout UT engine is that it looks great yet no big hardware is neededto run UT.Even on low detail it all looks gorgeous.I recently installed the original Unreal and with full detail Direct3D it still looks great!

Aren't UT maps very small in comparison to flight sim maps however? Don't think I've ever played on anything bigger then something a couple of square miles at most without having to stop and load a new map or "warp zone".

Even large maps like EQ are relatively small compared to flight sims...

haha, I think Olegs engine has been layed out a long time ago. BTW, it's the source of his income. Not the game brings the money into the company, the engine does, thinking long term.

For War Storm (BoB And Beyond), Oleg has to do something about the tiny 20km horizon distance (30km in Perfect Mode).

The short horizon distance and Earth Pancake is why we rarely see flight simmers post screenshots taken at high altitude that show the horizon. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

This is what a 300km horizon distance looks like, from about 5km altitude, over the StrikeFighters (experimental Pacific map -- this shows that long horizontal bay in the northern Celebes)...I think I made the beaches too wide -- should be half as deep.

That is 100 times larger area than FB maps in Perfect Mode. Its an older and simple texture map grafix but very high framerate performance.

Few things to think about....

1) Who can afford NASA computer to run this thing? Meaning... Flight simulation is in totally different scale, needless to say that physics calculations are taking huge part of resources as is...and now adding pressure in the graphics department... i donno about that. For Maddox crew to succeed with BOB and new series alot of things have to be taken under consideration. If they overdo it, it wont sell... no sales, no glory.
2) Oleg said about 1000 times about current engine limitations, in both graphical and processing department. We all know that current PF engine was adopted and heavily modified for IL2 series needs... and lasted already 5 years. But, limitations did not go away. That`s why they coded their own, i cant go into details for many reasons, but trust me, adopting something that is already out there, is not what you guys want.

Gentlemen the engine discussion is moot. As I said earlier, we should trust in Oleg. Be Sure.

A lot of advancements have taken place in Graphical Engine Design since IL2 was designed and as CrazyIvan points out, you have to weigh hardware requirements vs performance. My personal opinion is that we should push hardware limits to the max!

I trust Oleg to make the best value/performance compromise.

Also as another poster has pointed out, the best thing for the health of 1C and Maddox Games is to use their own GED. It is important to support the economic health of this company. Part of the continued viability of Flight Sims - Combat Flight Sims in particular - is that they be economically feasible.

No one has done more for Combat Flight Sims than Oleg.

that was well said dear!

Oleg's graphical is engine is the best I've seen for flight simulators, I've yet to see any BOB screenshots, but I hope they turn out close to the demo that was shown on www.projectoffset.com (http://www.projectoffset.com) hehe it would be so neat to have the frame of the canopy sweep across the controls as you roll from left to right. or the see the small scratch armks appear on the windows as the sun pass it. If anything something texture baked would vastly give the sense of illusion of photorealism hehe.

normal mapping, self-soft-shadowing, texture baked Global illumination light maps, all that wonderful stuff! hehe
