The Fokker D. VII should have won the war...it was the best of all WW1 fighters (was it D or Dr.?)

S! All!

The war (WWI) was won by the entry of the United States into the war.

Before anyone gets offended by that, let me explain it...

The entry of tanks were slowly breaking the deadlock of the trench-warfare around the time the U.S. entered the war. Germany, wanting to end the war before the United States entered in force, made a huge push into France. That push was stopped - by England and France as much as the United States. The war then ended...

Air warfare was a significant part of WWI, but it was NOT anywhere NEAR as important as it was in WWII. You can argue that air warfare won WWII, but you can't argue that successfully for WWI...

So, in a nutshell, WWI was won by the pressure Germany felt as the United States entered the war. Really Germany was smart - they had NO CHANCE of winning a war against a united Britian, France, and United States. The war might have been longer had Germany not made a big push at the end, but Germany would eventually have lost regardless.

The Camel was a significant airplane in WWI, but the air war in general was not the determining factor in winning or losing the war...

My understanding was that Germany had to capitulate because they were out of food. The civilians were starving and rioting. The front line was never pushed back into Germany, I think it was still in France when Germany surrendered.

The thing I find strange about WWI is why all the emphasis (blame) is placed on Germany, it was Austro-Hungaria that declared war first, Germany only entered after the Allies declared war on Austria (not that it matters all that much, from what I can tell they all wanted war and jumped at the opportunity).

BBC2 have an excellent series on WW1 - currently running now but available from their website in DVD or VHS.

Very similar to the World at War series - this was ade in 1964 50 years after the start of the war.

Actually Germany had plans for the Tiger tank finalised by 1915 but withdraw it from production when word of the Sopwith Camel got out as the Sopwith would simply have destroyed it from above.

By 1942 it was safe to work on the Tiger again as no more Sopwith Camel were operational. they weree unaware that the .50 used in the p47 was based on the Sopwith gun and hence could also take out Tiger tanks with a single shot.

"after the Allies declared war on Austria "

... actually it was Serbia and her treaties ...

and besides, the Curtis 'Jenny' won the war.
