Doesn't make any difference if you have Pro or Home edition of Windows XP. Not for gaming anyways.

Pro has some additional network management and server tools that Home doesn't have (although you can enable most of them in Home anyways) but they are virtually indentical operating systems otherwise. Both equally suited to gaming.

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Well I got pro - as the others have said, verry little difference between the two except for the networking stuff.

You can turn off a lot of stuff in both XP's you don't need for playing games - create profiles etc (and general XP system tidying/security) - I havent personally done this, i.e. create a "Games profile" (yet) but a good guide can be found at:

Other people swear by 98 as a gaming OS (cos it is supposedly slightly quicker) but as time progresses drivers will be come less and less available - games will become 2K /XP only so there is that to consider.

Have tried running games (notably original IL2 Demo) on this PC under 2K (which it came with originally) but with most of the improvements/changes possible in XP, I beleive that my box is now more stable and a bit quicker. Again this might just be me/my setup.

I have XP home and Win98 and the only difference is 98 requires less ram. Use 1024megs for XP.

Hi all,
Have not long uprgraded to XP pro and have got it on a dual boot setup both running XP. I simply do this for file managment and security reasons at the moment. Having said that I am just about to re-install win98se and have the dual boot XP/win98se. My reason? Simple, speed! It is not a hearsay type thing that win98se runs games quicker, it is a fact. Anyone who disagrees has not made a proper comparison between the two imo. Although the difference is not as great as was between 95 and 98 it is still considerable enough for me to have to put up with a diminishing driver problem for the time being. We all love and play IL2/FB/AEP, they all run at least 10% quicker on 98se on my sys at the moment. There is no difference in stabilty either although I will say XP does a few more "wierd" things. Just try getting fraps and something like 3D Mark and you should see the same sort of results. I run a G4 ti4600 so I cannot talk about Ati's or Fx series cards but believe as it is all down to XP using more sys resources overall expect that situation to be the same.

Sys specs
Ti4600128, 768mb pc2700ddr (have to alter 98 to allow it to see above 512), s/blaster live 5.1, Gigabyte GA7 Vaxp mobo, Os, well whatever suits what am doing at the moment.

Yes it is! I run XP Pro because I got given a copy.

I wouldn't join any club that would have ME as member!

Do the Home have this administrations tools in the control panel. It took a while for me to find it but it has so many tools you really can´t live without.

I think the home version does have some of the admin tools, maybe not all - AFAK all that is missing from home is the Networking bits - most of which, as has been said, can be enabled in some way or other. I may be wrong on this...

Ok after speculating aimlessly it occured to me to actually go and try find out what the diffs are http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif - found these bits of propaganda from microsoft http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
