Hello,

In the PTO when planes came in for landings on carriers, did the carrier ever help pilots acquire the ship by a signal light or flare? I can imagine on a foggy day or just being tired from a 40+ minute sortie that I could have lots of trouble spotting the ship. It would be awesome in PF if you could radio the carrier and request a spotter lighter or flare. I'm not sure if this happened but it would be great. I know in FB:AEP I often have a hell of a time finding grass runways but a flare or signal light would do wonders.

Ships tend to "stick out" reasonably well in typical flying weather in the Pacific, often past sims tended to not have them visible as they really were. The escorts, wakes etc give a pretty broad target and indicate direction. If you can't see the ship in daytime, you aren't going to see a flare!

Night ops are different, and on a cloudy night with little moon, it's all instrument flying, beyond the scope of most in the game here. In a famous incident at the Battle of the Philipine Sea, the lights of te fleet were turned on to help the returning planes find the fleet in the dark.

Another famous way to find the CBG at night was to look for a faintly glowing wake. The screws churned up and agitated bioluminescent plankton (or some kind of life-form) in the water.

Thanks guys. Let's hope big fat wakes are modeled in. Knowing my ability to find anything, i would still have trouble http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Not a stupid question at all! In some of the great downloadable missions available for CFS2, finding the carrier can be problematical, as the ship sometimes doesn't pop into view till you are relatively close. Hopefully this subject will be taken care of to satisfy "all".
