View Full Version : Dive Bombing Question(s)

The only dive-bombing training track that I have found focuses on the Stuka. Can that be applied to the SBD, also? Also, what is the preferred dive angle (measured from the horizontal) in a (1)Stuka and (2)SBD?

Stuka - About 90 degrees

SBD - about 70 dgrees........but the AI SBD's seem to be modeled after the stuka in their dive attack.

I haven't mastered the SBD bombing technique but I'm working on it.

From the after action reports of VB6 pilots:
Normal ingress to the target area @ 18 to 20k ft, begin glide approach down to about 14k ft, then hit dive brakes and push over to target. Release @ 2,000 to 1,500 ft, pull up and level @ 500 Ft, regroup and make way out between escort. Stay low to deck until out of danger from enemy fighters. (IJ fighters were reluctant to press home the attack against a group of SBD's or TB's that were low to the deck)

The reason Dive bomber pilots waited so long on releasing the bombs was due to the ships making evasive manuvuers. You can release at higher alt if the target is stationary.

Another thing SBD pilots did in real life, I don't know if it has any impact in the game, was to continue diving even after dropping the bomb. Delaying the pull out made sure that the pilot didn't upset the course of the bomb as it was still being release by the swing arms and made sure that turbulence, prop wash, etc. didn't disturb the bombs drop.

I havent missed yet..unless the AAA gets lucky http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
on the SBD3 I let the ship fill my 1st then 2nd ring on gunsight , I go straight horizontal on Ju87 & SBD,the exception the Aichi Val doesnt like highspeed dives I go a 45 angle with it
