I feel it's time for an upgrade, but I'm very undecided at the moment.

So, my current system is a P4 2.6 GHz, 512 MB DDR-333 and a Radeon 9600TX (souped up 9500, performance-wise between 9600 and 9600pro).

I thought about a 9800pro (256MB) or maybe a 9800TX (Sapphire preferred, but would buy "standard" if that saves enough money http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) and another 512 MB RAM.

This would cost 400 Euro (9800pro) or 500 Euro (9800XT).

My goal is to play IL2 on 1280x960 with complete excellent details and LOMAC also on 1280x960 with high details.

What do you think? 9800pro or XT? I think pro / xt isn't that much a difference on low res, but on higher resolutions and with AA / AF, the pro drops a lot in performance.

I know that the next generation will be out soon, but I'd rather upgrade now, and buy a complete new system in half a year that fully utilizes the new cards.

Btw. I'm a student, so 500 Euro is pretty much the maximum budget. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You still have pretty powerful system, I would wait a little for 939 socket enabled AMD64 3500+ and Radeon X800 gfx...(if you really want to run LOMAC at full potential)
Meanwhile you can add another 512 MB of RAM and be just fine.

Altitude, speed, manoeuvre and.... CRASH!

I agree with Stalker. You aren't going to see much difference between your current card and a 9800pro. There will be a difference, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it would be worth 500 euros for it.

If I were you, get more ram and wait till PCI express has become standard, then use your cash to upgrade.

I've a 9700pro and friends with 9600pros and 9800pros, there isn't a huge difference between them. If you had say a 9200 I'd say yeah, worth the upgrade, but your current card sounds pretty decent.

Hm. The RAM upgrade is pretty much decided. I guess this will help with missions with many objects.

But will it help with higher details? The 9600TX has only 128MB, while the 9800pro oder xt have 256MB. Also, keep in mind it really is a 9500 chip, not a 9600 (in spite of it's name).

What makes me believe that I would get a noticeable performance boost actually is the X2 running demo benchmark. The XT is (on higher res) still well above 40 FPS, where I get 20 FPS at most. And I don't even try to run it with full AA / AF on my system. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Maybe someone has upgraded from a comparable system recently?

edit:

Thanks, Inadaze. That's just the answer I needed. Will upgrade RAM and then see how everything runs. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

What can you run IL2 at right now?
My bud and I run at 1024 * 768 4xaa 8xfaa on 9700pro and 9600pros (both 128 meg). Thats on Excellent. Just checked, me m8 says he uses 4aa 4faa.
My fps don't go below much 30 even when alot is going on, My mates go down to 20, but there's a gig difference in the speed of our processors and he's running 266ddr and I'm using 400ddr.

I could run higher say 1280 960, but my fps start to go low/sub twenty when alot is going on. ie dog fights on city maps.

I thought it might give you more to compare against to help your decision http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Usually I run Il2 at 1024x768 on Excellent, no (or minmal, have to check when I get home) AA and 4x AF. This usually gives good FPS, with the exception of larger dogfights, Normandy / Stalingrad and DCGEN generated missions.
The last one is because of the density of other objects. I guess the RAM upgrade will take care of the DCGEN mission problem.

Lately, I've tried running everything on 1280x960, and the performance drop comes earlier. I notice it on the pacific map in particular.

The main advantage of a 9800pro/xt would probably be the power to run Il2 on that resolution with AA and AF. How much effect does the sheer amount of RAM available have on IL2?

It has quite a big effect, it wil help eek out a few extra fps and smooth out the game when alot is happening. I think your right to try the extra memory first and see what difference it makes.
It won't do miracles but it will help when bigger dog fights are going on. I found a faster cpu and more ram helped more than my graphics card when it came to the overall smoothness of how the game runs. I could run at the same settings with a 2.2 athlon with 266ddr but frame rates plummetted over cities. I've a amd3.2 with a gig of ddr400 memory. I use the same graphic settings as I used before but get much smoother gameplay.

Whooooaaa! Hang on there Pink!

The new ATi cards are in Europe now. In the UK the X800Pro costs about the same as a 9800 XT and is noticeably better. Go for an X800. I found them listed in the UK by dabs.com at 299 inc VAT (449 euros).

Have a look at tomshardware.com for comparisons with the 9800XT.

Regards,

RocketDog.

The new cards are already here? *drool*
Well, then it's settled. New RAM it is, then waiting for the local hardware store of my choice to receive the new ATIs. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Done. 1Gig of RAM.

Now to separate wishful thinking from actual performance. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Pre-ordered an X800pro. Should be in store around 11.06., 387 Euro plus MwSt (VAT).
