View Full Version : A plea to map makers

Please; please make the runways obvious.

I simply had to give up on the Historia server; one I'd read much about and seemed to have settings I like; after being completely unable to find the runway.

Some map makers do a lovely job of marking out the bases (Spits v. 109's springs to mind as one of the best); some seem to think it's part of the challenge.

It's not. If I wanted an off road navigation game I'd buy Colin Mcray's Rallye.

I want to fly; and for that I need... Runways!

Um... why not, when selecting you home base, note down where all the other ones are on a piece of paper. Then, as you're flying, use your heading indicator to direct you to those locations.

Or, if worse comes to worse, shadow a fellow pilot until you can learn how to navigate in these situations.

I think he means there actually being something at the base so when you're nearby you might see a hangar or a row of parked planes. I like to put detail into these things but all thats needed are a row of three hangars and a jeep and that would be a huge benefit to trying to find or taxi at a base.

reading the brief always helps. some bases didn't have nice little runway marks.

Well i suggest that you write to The il2 map's team makers, it will be a good step forward also state you opinion or advice is another good way, you can visit the site http://www.gozr.net/iocl/.
The maps in those MTO missions are made to represent at the closest as possible to the real ones in the ww2 with the goods and the bads. A s i always wanted to say that Historia is for more advanced pilots and History lover, it is actually made by Real Pilots in R-L, It doesn't suit everyone and that the beauty of it, none can rival with the status of quality of Historia period.

Thanks for the help, guys.

The white T marking is practicaly invisible from the cockpit (although rightly enough it's well visable from the air; but then it's too late).

I've worked all runways most of my life; and yes, indeed; they don't all have nice little marker lights. However; there's _always_ either clear markings; or ground crew.

Nontheless; I can see from the postings that Historia has exactly the market share it wants. Which is strange; as when I logged on I was the only person on the server (20:00 CET). I guess I'll have to stick to other servers more suitable to "level of advancement".

BUT, these are wartime airfields - they aren't meant to be obvious - they are meant to be obscure so that the enemy find that as difficult to find, the advantage the pilot has is that it is his airfield and he knows it is there.
If you read in Pierre Clostermans book the Germans painted one of their airfield to make it look as though it was out of action with bomb craters all over the runways etc.
Having aircraft lined up is asking for them to be shot, they should be dispersed. Difficult sometimes with the kind of layour we get - but look at the Norway map and there are two airfields in Scotland which are very good.

Sorry our Server is a bit hard.

If the game would allow briefings with pictures, this would not be of concern.

Because we could give you an overview and a basic pictorial briefing of the place, just as they would in real life.

The only way to aquire the knowlege is to either get up the best you can and do your own survey, or post at the above Link Gozr supplied. Our map makers are more than happy to show off thier goods.

Oh and as far as the server being populated, it just doesn't on its own, settings are stiff enough folks just won't fly by them selves too often there.

But if we get 3 or 4 on there then it will fill up rather quick, once people see there is a crowd gathering.

With the settings we run, it extremly tough to find any action without a crowd, and our patrons know this very well, and show according to that.

We met the same problem, and in fact, our genius mission maker came up with the idea to post recon photos on the web-based mission briefs. He manually draws out ingress and egress points, and suspected location of ground targets. Honestly, I never ever enjoined ground attack so much before http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Now even I can do hit-and-run attacks with controllable flak damage and a chance to escape the scrambling fighters http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Here is one example:
http://web.t-online.hu/rnzoli/IL2DSC/cmirko_mission_briefings/SO/02/Photo-1.jpg

The full brief for this mission is
here (http://web.t-online.hu/rnzoli/IL2DSC/cmirko_mission_briefings/SO/02/01_red.html).

Another mission briefing with recon photos (http://web.t-online.hu/rnzoli/IL2DSC/cmirko_mission_briefings/STA/03/01_blue.html).

The index to all mission briefings (http://web.t-online.hu/rnzoli/IL2DSC/cmirko_mission_briefings/index.htm) on that server.

yes We have been doing this for a longtime now
http://www.gozr.net/iocl/viewtopic.php?t=1347
But with those new maps the maps makers need all the help and feed back they can get.

Etc..

On my side i fly much more rarely now il2 since i need a level difficulty greater than the all switches and limitation of maps, graphics and managements can give of this sim but a majority of il2 sim pilots don't... Yet.!
