I've played this game for awhile but I have never been promoted and now I am wondering how you end up being promoted?

It comes over time with success. The more tonnage you sink, the sooner you get there. In game terms, it doesn't do much for you; it's an ego stroke, but nice nonetheless. It may have something to do with the difficulty level at which you play. Renown awarded is calculated using your difficulty settings; at 100% you 100% renown, at lower levels you earn less, but not at a one for one increment. Are you playing stock SH3 or with mods? Out-of-the-box SH3 is alright for learning the basics of the game, but to really enjoy the game seriously, you simply must consider going to a supermod like Grey Wolves Gold, War Ace Campaign or Living SH3; all of these add to the content of the game in realism tweaks, graphics, sound and historicity.

P.S. I love your avatar and sig banner.

I use GWX 3.0 and before it was just stock, and I see. Now that I have taken a more aggressive stance in my playing I have been sinking large quantities of ships.

And thankyou.

Great! That's the one I use, but I'm seriously giving consideration to installing LSH3 on another system, or going with a multiple-mod setup on one machine.

Are you also using "SH3 Commander?" I never leave port without it. One option that I always use is the "realistic career length" option, which causes your Kaleun to retire at an unknown date. The calculation is based on number of days at sea, and probably some other factors which I am not privy to. It causes me to make the most of every patrol, as I never know when my skipper goes ashore for the rest of the war. I've had careers last as short as about four patrols and as long as nine patrols. Because it is unpredictable, you find your careers have more spice to them; varying tonnage scores and awards, promotions, etc.

Do you play one career from 39 to 45? Because of SH3 Cmdr I start a career in 39 with a new Kaleun and play him until he is killed or retired. Then I start a new career in the month/year of the previous Kaleun, so that I am exposed to the whole course of the war. The Happy Time is great, but nothing is as satisfying as surving the years 43 to 45, no matter how paltry your tonnage score. Meeting elite escorts and hunter killers adds to the game's pucker factor, surviving them is the icing on the cake.

I've never placed Commander, but retiring does sound much better than having to fight the whole war.

It's a great utility. It works "outside" of the game, modifies files and then loads into the game. After you exit your patrol and game, it makes changes to your career files. I think there are files for Commander in the GWX download package. I'm also trying to find a direct download link that contains the latest version for you.

P.S. Are you a Civil War buff? I take it you may be, going by your name, JLC. If so, I have a really sweet CW song or two for you, which I'll post here if you wish.

I have SH3C but I don't know where I install it, and how do I know if it is even installed right in the game? Will it have something noticeably different? Also should I start a new career since I'm installing this mod on my third patrol?

And yes I am.

SH3 Commander does not install inside the SH3 game directory. It has its own installer and should definitely be installed into its own directory. By the way, what OS are you using to play SH3? Vista and W7 have their own installation requirements, XP is straightforward. There is a set of compatibility files as well if you wish to use Commander with GWX. I have SH3 on a W7n notebook for now, but I'm really wanting to get it going again on my gaming desktop. I just have so much to do in the meantime.

I'm not sure if you swing to the Yanks or the Rebs, so I'll give you one of each from Johnny Horton. Why did so many great performers have to die in plane crashes? Many of these stars died before I was born or still a babe in cradle.

I use Vista, and how do I access the features like the ship names and stuff that you were talking about earlier.

Commander does all of its magic "outside" of the game. It has a starter, so you click on it to load Commander, choose your options and then start your patrol. After your patrol, you save and exit your game. Commander then applies your patrol events to your career record, which you view while not actually in the game. This is the aspect that confuses many people. The best practice is to use Commander to start each patrol and then exit the game after each patrol. It sounds like a pain, but because it is not an in-game utility, that's the way it is. I'm still trying to find you a current download link.

Here's a download link to the latest version of Commander, 3.2:

Download SH3 Cmdr 3.2 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=733)

I can't imagine what's not working with yours. Mine is installed into its own directory on C:\. Because of the "security" featurs of W7 I do not install any of my SH3 game files or anything else related to the game under C:\program files, or whatever. I'm not quite sure how that works in Vista, but in W7 you are best advised to completely avoid the default installation path. I have a shortcut on my desktop; I click that to start Commander, it loads and I set my various options then tell it to start the game. It modifies the files it needs to, then starts the game and applies any changes required.

Do you think you could e-mail me it since I can't seem to login to my account.
