Forest textures smooth and pretty.

Japan and New Guinea load Fast and play ~smooth~ -- I always say we don't need much Building Objects even in Europe maps.

Czech out the cool volcano crater on Japan map at X = 109km and Y = 269km ... southeast of Kokuoka

I'm finding the Palau [and Palau online] maps to be excellent in terms of variety of terrain, airbases, and speed. Two floatplane bases, tonnes of sea, and a crossover runway to the south. Awsum!

maps are good, hawaii looks abit low poly tho, and the forest is all 1 level as per fb, but not much canbe done about that :\
also, why are all rivers etc at sea level, or am i wrong?

Pretty sure "water level" is set as "sea level" due to the way that Il2FBAEPPF process images as heightmaps when they're put into the game.

Interesting. I checked it out, some good points but the colour air photography you mention cannot be used for comparison with visual appearance. From my earlier flying lessons, and time spent on TV/radio towers, the FB landscape is the most realistic looking (in the colour). I would love to see a new map engine, but it won't happen over the FP. Maybe for BoB and Beyond. What Oleg needs most is a way to make maps more easily. The maps now may be the hardest thing to create in the sim, possibly harder than multi~engine cockpits I dunno, so we either don't have enough maps or they are too small.

Regarding photographic puke, I never stated I am for an actual sattelite photograph mapping. What I AM for, is photo-based tile creation, with enough variation (As is LOMAC terrain). See http://www.lockon.ru/index.php?end_pos=10&scr=list&lang=en

The solution to Olegs problem IMO is open architecture/outsourcing. Provide 3rd party devs with an open interface and tool and they'll do wonders. Most sims are basing their terrain on SRTM data ( http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/ )nowadays and it would be the wisest thing for the 1CM camp to follow suit. Results will look MUCH better than FSGlobal 2005 ( http://fsglobal2005.com/ )which is the by far the most detailed "generic" terrain (and the only to cover the whole globe). That's because of the CRAPPY MSFS engine (NOT the case with IL-2)

So, starting with the mesh, they move on to features (again digitized data for roads, rivers, bridges, cities, are available). Most sims use tools to automatically place their textures according to algorithms, and then manually tweak that. In order for that to be succesfull however, you need to have a solid texture library to cover your map. Then you start tweaking manually with some special features like city limits etc. which you can base on WWII maps.

I know it's not as simple as it sounds, but there is a process and Top Notch terrain in IL-2 is definately doable. If the constraint is time/money/human resources, then I can't see any other way than some form of outsourcing. I can almost guarantee that people would swarm like bees on a honey jar if they had the opportunity to create hi-fi maps for IL-2.

Lexx-I can sense your saliva slowly dripping away at the tthought of map tools;-))

Eagle could really offer a lot and in many departments, so even we talked jets, can you imagine a joint 1C/ED Korean War game??

Ooh those jets would be sooo slick!
