I've received this message a couple of times recently but the warship is always pretty far away. I've tried to intercept it but have never been successful.

Is this warship something other than a DD, a cruiser perhaps? Why would SH3 tell me about a DD a couple of grids away when I've got them all around me anyway? Has anyone succesfully found the warship after receiving this message and what was it?

Who knows. What I *do* know is that I wouldn't be wasting time, fuel, and torps on sinking a warship: the tonnage war is all about the merchants!

It will be a battleship or cruiser or similar.

The chances of getting them are slim to none unless you are near. Warships do not continue on the same heading and at long range, by the time you reach the intercept point you plotted they will have most likely changed direction.

I have only ever had contacts for them at very long range, and i dont usually bother wasting deisal chasing them. I think with warships your only real chance is to bump into them, or meet them in a harbour.

Yes, these are usually task-groups. I have intercepted two now, although I've seen dozens of reports. You can still intercept them at long ranges if you happen to be more or less in the direction that they're travelling. Otherwise, as has already been pointed out, you've no chance.

The task groups typically comprise ships that are larger than DDs. Of the two I've met, one was a battleship and about 6 to 7 DDs. The other was a pair of light cruisers. I've only managed to sink one of the cruisers though, and that was only because of a lucky stern shot, that must've blown off the propellors causing it to lie dead in the water while I reloaded a second salvo.

I have a question on battleships (especially those which carry planes):
When you are shadowing a convoy or even a task group with a carrier, do the ships which carry planes (carriers or cruisers with catapults to launch planes) actually launch them so that they try to chase you away like told in the "Oesten - Malaya" video on shiii homepage?

On the Burial at sea (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/3421043543) thread, I mentioned that I encountered two tankers traveling at 12 kts. This was treated as "fast", so maybe the targets in question were actually lone transports moving faster than 9 kts. The game treats 6-7 kts as "slow", 9 kts as "medium" and apparently 12 kts as "fast".

I've also gotten messages about Task Forces moving slow that were too far away for me to intercept. Don't know if a Task Force is composed of warships or not at this point...

I've had this also. But in my experience those "task forces" moving at 7-9 knots (slow) aren't task forces but convoys led by DD. It seems as if since any patch or any time in the game (1942 or so) convoys which first ship is a destroyer are treated as task force on the nav map.

I had this message last night and happened to be close enough to see it at a distance and get a ID on it. It was a light cruiser and was traveling at 30 knots. I was not in position to intercept it and had to let it go.

maybe they are taskforces if there are extra many troop ships in them. ..... could be ...

Nope, If a taskforce or convoy then the message says "enemy taskforce/convoy at grid....". If any single 'commercial' then it just appears as a contact on the map or sonarman picks it up, without radio message. The message says specifically "enemy warship...".

Thanks HW3, a sighting was what I needed to hear about, I would freak if I charged across the Atlantic to intercept it and found a Flower! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have once or twice recieved those single warship radio messages and tried to intercept it but due to bad weather I couldn't find it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Can anyone give a statement on my question with carriers and planes some posts above http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Convoy escorts with planes would try to keep them in the air as much as possible. A carrier would have a patrol in the air at all times. Weather permitting of course.

A battleship capt would have been acutely aware that he would have to stop to recover his float planes though.
