Its depressing to think that the P-47 is one of the original FB planes and we have never received new variants since the inception of the game.

" Zemke had compared the P-47C against the captured flyable Luftwaffe fighters which were operated by the British as training aids for combat pilots. Zemke found out that the early Fw 9 19OA was quite a handful but it could be met and defeated on its own ground by the Thunderbolt, if the big fighter was precisely flown to take advantage of the German machine's weaknesses. The much smaller Fw 190 could accelerate faster than the P-47C in all phases of flight but, given some time, the P-47 could usually overhaul the German in a long run. The Fw 190 could out climb the P-47 and initially out dive it, but the P-47C, with its tremendous diving capabilities, could quickly catch the German. The Focke-Wulf was at an advantage in a close-in dogfight, especially if the P-47's speed could be reduced to below 250-mph - giving the agile German fighter a chance to maneuver inside the P-47's turning radius. The cannon-armed German could do great damage to the Thunderbolt's rugged airframe but the Fw 190 was virtually doomed if it took a direct burst of fire from all eight of the .50-cal Brownings.
Zemke concluded that the P-47 would be most effective against the German fighters if the 56th operated above 15,000-ft where the big turbosupercharger would really start pumping extra power to the R-2800 while the German's power scale would begin slightly to drop off. Dogfights were not recommended, so Zemke devised a dive and zoom tactic which was most effective when employed against the Luftwaffe. P-47 pilots were instructed to take advantage of height when engaging the enemy and then dive on the tatget for a firing pass, zoom climbing for altitude after the pass and then setting up for another firing run. This way the Thunderbolt pilot could avoid being drawn into a dogfight where he would be at a disadvantage."

The 4th FG (Eagle Squadron) initially imposed a Hard Deck of 18,000 feet for their initial campaigns with the P-47.

They felt that the big, heavy, turbosupercharged Jug was outmatched below that altitude. Above about 23,000 even the DB-601 and 605 engined 109s were sluggish and dropping off while the P-47 wasn't hitting best altitude for another 4-5,000 feet. Plus that very nice eliptical wing, metal alierons and sleek frame meant that apart from the Spitfire the P-47 was about the best high altitude bird in the European Theatre until the Mustang and 190D9 started showing up 1944.

It didn't have that turbo supercharger for nothing. The fact that it was used very successfully as a ground pounder is testament to it's versatility and ruggedness.

Make no mistake though. The very same -25-RE T-bolt (and later) serving in the Ninth, strafing and bombing German columns today could also strap on some fuel and escort the heavies to Berlin and back tomorrow.

Ironically, the P-47 got the ability to get to Berlin at the same time the P-51 had arrived in sufficient numbers to escort, and the bulk of the P-47s were being transferred to the Ninth for tactical work. These Ninth AF Thunderbolts provided escort for light and medium bombers, as well as performing stellar work in the fighter/bomber role. These Jugs were true force multipliers, able to perform a variety of roles well, without special models and/or marks. Once they got paddle props, the Jug was also a lot better at being able to fight at lower alts, although higher alt was still preferred.

I wouldnt know if its actually good or not, my PC is too slow on the web.... Maybe I'll have watched it by the end of the day. :-)

I think the above video can answer quiet a few questions in the forems right now... and it would be GREAT if we had some startup sounds like that... or something. 8-)

The P-47D's could make it to Berlin, but the 8th AAF needed a fighter which could take their heavies further, to Czecheslovakia, Hungary and East Prussia. Targets there were out of range for the Jugs.

That was the main reason for the switch to the P-51. It wasn't because the P-47 was less effective in combat. The P-47 performed just as well as an escort up at 25,000-35,000 feet. In fact some might say more effective, since it had greater firepower.

What did you find for average altitudes of the B-17 and B-24 raids?

Wouldn't the P-47D have performance advantages over the P-51D 1650-7 at altitudes over 25K? At these altitudes the Fw190A would suffer severe performance loss. The Bf109 would be the main threat to the escort fighters themselves.
