What is the deal with the gyro sight, was it really used in p-51's in wwII?

Yes. Aswell as Spitfires, YP-80s and some P-38s.

It`s calculating your deflections shots,so keep it on the target for a second or two and then fire.

You still need to eyeball the amount of lead you need due to target's speed and crossing angle. However, the additional lead (added to the gyro solution) will be far less than the amount you normally pull with a fixed sight. The sight is extremely deadly from the rear because the other factors are pretty much removed from the equation. I find it useful to leave the fixed turned on to check the reasonableness of the gyros solution against my instincts.
