There are no 3rd party add-ons for planes. You can only get them through patches released by 1C. Lots of good skins, unfortunately IL2SKINS is currently down. If you post in paintschemes forum somebody can come up with something (tell 'em what plane you are looking for).
2)You have to program a key to switch between the alt/speed settings in the controls.
3)Yes but you can only fly them from extrnal view, I have no idea how unfortunately (can't do it in campaign though.

1. No, there is not planes and/or mods you can download. The source code is not and never will be released to the public by Oleg. This help prevent cheating and people from tweaking flight models. If you flew CFS series then you know what I mean. You can download skins and utilities.

2. Keep a few things in mind with landing on carriers. Its not the same as landing on a runway. You basically want to stall your plane right over the deck, kind of like dropping out of the sky. Have no fear Navy gear is very strong. Use your throttle to control your elevation and use your elevators to control your speed. That is very important.

3. Best place to get skins is www.il2skins.com (http://www.il2skins.com) but unfortunately it is down at the moment. The creator is redoing the site and should be up sometime in the near future we hope. You can also visit www.airwarfare.com (http://www.airwarfare.com) for guides, utilities, and I believe they have skins.

4. It is not likely the B-29 or B-17 will ever be flyable. Its been a hot topic for a long time. You can however fly them from externals by adding them to the mission file. So you would make a mission using Full mission builder and save it as a net dogfight mission. Then you would go into the mission folder located in C:,ProgramFiles,UBIsoft,IL-2ForgottenBattles or PacificFighters. Usually. Open the mission using notepad and under homebase add B-29 hit enter to drop down a line and add B-17G click on the X and select yes to save it. When you load up your dogfight mission you will now be able to fly them via external view. Chase view (F8 by default) is a good way. Be sure to have externals on under difficulty options.

5. To switch from meters to feet and kph to mph you need to map a key. Its not selected by default so open your game, go into controls, scroll down to the bottom and look for toggle speed bar. Map a key you desire to toggle through. You can choose mph, kph, or knots.

6. Finally I highly suggest you download Hyperlobby rather then using UBI to find and join games. There are over a thousand pilots flying daily on HL versus the thirty or so on UBI. Here is a link to Hyperlobby homepage http://hyperfighter.jinak.cz/ and here is a link for a direct download for Hyperlobby client ftp://69.56.198.2/HLClient/hlpro3892.zip

Hope I could help...and welcome to the community and enjoy the best combat sim on the planet http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

croc,

Glad to see you; I'm a recent beginner and I can tell you, gettin the hang of the game is well worth it. On carrier landings; just practice practice practice. You'll get a feel for the plane eventually, promise! For now, just split the front of the deck with the horizon and be a little off center of the carrier so you can actually see it. Like everyone's been saying, use throttle to alter rate of descent, and angle of attack to control speed. Stay above stall speed and almost drop her onto the deck (zeros and seafires have a tendency to bounce though... but they are light so you can bring them in more like you would a land based plane).

But keep practicing; it will take you a lot longer than you'd expect, but I promise it is worth the efort. Best of luck.
